  1. Rickie--I love the guy, but come on, do we really think he's gonna make it thru a season. Absolutely. I personally think it's pretty fluky that he suffered the same injury to each wrist so close together. I think the Braun-Fielder combo is now exceeded by the Pujols-Holliday combo Why? Away from Coors, Holliday has mustered an OPS around .800 in his career.
  2. The Hardball Times just posted a Top 10 prospects list for the Brewers: Really not sure why Gamel was just flat-out omitted.
  3. Holliday, playing half his games at Coors, has been Ryan Braun with better defense. I bet Braun outproduces him at the plate in 2010.
  4. The Damon 'rumors' might well just be another Boras tactic. Damon burned bridges with the Yankees by demanding 2/$20M when the Yanks offered something like 2/$15M... really pissed Cashman off, apparently. So now he seems to be out questing after this mythical 2/$20M deal, and will probably just wind up getting the same as or even less than the Yankees offered him in the first place. I agree with yoshii -- until there's more substance to the rumor than, 'Uhhh, he's like gonna sign with a midwest team that starts with the letter M or something', I can't put much stock in it.
  5. Interesting (possible) twist here... Deadspin link Washington Post link Maybe Arenas is slightly less scummy than previously thought?
  6. He has a career .370 average in Busch. That's a sample of roughly 200 PAs. His career home line (1,860 PAs) is .351/.420/.632/1.052 ... career road line (1,778 PAs) of .284/.353/.454/.808. 7/$120M is an awful lot of money to spend on a guy in any event, but especially if he's a LF only giving you an OPS in the .850 neighborhood.
  7. Edgar was a top 3 hitter in all of baseball over those years that no pitcher would want to face with the game on the line. He was a truly special hitter and i like greatness in the HOF over consistently good players This really sums up my thoughts on the HoF in general & Martinez in specific. The guy was an absolutely elite player during his era -- DH or not, those are the guys that the HoF was created to honor imho.
  8. I thought they played a good game tonight against a very tough opponent on the road. I don't see how this loss will be held against them much come Selection Sunday. It was nice to see Leuer get aggressive in the second half. Unfortunately Nankivil just wasn't able to be effective. I thought the defense overall was great, but the Badgers got outworked on the boards by MSU's bigger & more physical posts.
  9. When I was there, I'm pretty sure Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, & Walter Johnson all had platinum plaques & diamond-grill teeth. I might be wrong though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. Booooo! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  11. UW is in good shape at halftime... just need to get some of these shots that've rimmed out to fall. Can't say enough about the team defense so far on both sides.
  12. Mustache for sure! But don't forget the hats http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I, too, grew up loving Vince Condella's work.
  13. Edgar Martinez getting such a low tally is just an embarrassment, imo... meanwhile, ERIC freaking KARROS actually got a vote or two? Unreal.
  14. I agree. The Cards really outbid... themselves, it appears.
  15. Rosenthal confirms. Supposedly there's an option for a 5th year, which -- I believe -- would buy out his second year of free agency (I'd guess the option is a team option, but I'm not sure). As it stands the M's buy out his two remaining arby years, along with one FA year. - FanGraphs' take - Lookout Landing's take - USS Mariner/Dave Cameron's brief take (I'd look for more later)
  16. Who is at fault for the "state of the rotation" in 2009? So the solution to an already bad problem is to make it worse? (your idea of jettisoning Suppan) Not sure what the point was of demoting Hardy and giving Hall away for nothing when the team was out of the race They got the best available deal for Hall. I guarantee you Melvin had been working for months to unload that contract, & finally found something he could stomach. As for Hardy, they kept him in AAA to increase his service time. Doing this actually increased his trade value, because it gives his new team (obv. now MIN) more salary control of him. A one-week stretch of palatable offense really wouldn't have done anything to increase J.J.'s value. Like I said, some people just do anything to find fault with Melvin -- nevermind that he's widely regarded as one of the best GMs in the game. Every GM makes mistakes, but one like Melvin just doesn't make nearly as many as the rest of his peers. I posted the same thing at the time of the purge in August and people countered with "Bill Hall has no value", etc., etc. Apparently the Red Sox feel that he does. Yes, they feel he has value because they're hardly going to have to pay him a dime, and they are in dire need of a cheap IF backup since Lowell won't be able to contribute much in 2010. Like BREWCREW5 noted, the M's are also sending a minor leaguer & cash along with Hall. If anything, this is Zduriencik turning a redundant player into one Seattle can actually use in Kotchman.
  17. Boston is going with Cameron in CF & Ellsbury in LF. Link This is kinda funny to me, since Ellsbury won the MLB.com Defensive Player of the Year award for 2009. It was relatively undeserved, as Ellsbury has the knock of getting bad jumps on balls (his speed allows him to catch up on them & make 'incredible' plays). Basically, he's the anti-Cameron, who makes it all look so easy.
  18. Hall & Hardy killed their own trade value, and Suppan was needed (just as a body) given the state of the rotation in 2009. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that someone found a way to slam Melvin, though.
  19. I would expect Melvin to have Lewis on his radar screen, since you noted that he drafted him, yoshii. I agree that Lewis is at least worth a look
  20. Signing Holliday would also prevent us from retaining many of our home-grown stars. Aside from the fact that it isn't going to happen, it's a really bad idea for the Brewers imo.
  21. Definitely? Not sure you're remembering just how incredible the Yankees' roster is.
  22. Boils down to 1 year at $10M or two years at $14M. I think this is a tremendous pickup for the Red Sox. Link
  23. Matt Klaassen of FanGraphs wrote a piece examining GMs around MLB: Is a GM Gap Behind the AL/NL Disparity?
  24. My top 5 guess Escobar Lawrie Gamel Arnett Lucroy
  25. If a guy steals 50 bases thats like hitting 50 doubles, you are in scoring position 50 more times That's not how it works, even if you are 50-for-50 in SB attempts. 2Bs are still far more valuable, since they carry more SLG as well. Once you weigh in the fact that no one is going to go 50-50 in SB attempts, the CSs also are really costly & not even close to hitting 50 2Bs.
