  1. I still haven't finished that book, BlueFever. Not for lack of time, though. It's such a great read I always make sure to set it down after half an hour or an hour. I want to savor it... not just blow through it like I would if I didn't make myself put it down.
  2. Macha had better figure out a way to score consistently What this means is that he needs to put the best OBP lineup on the field on a consistent basis. SBs have no correlation with consistent run-scoring.
  3. I love how Conan didn't even introduce the musical all-stars that were there. That was one heck of a jam session http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Conan held his own too, I had no idea he played guitar.
  4. $13M for one year of Johnny Damon? Is he even worth half of that? According to FanGraphs, his 2009 production was worth roughly $13.6M. However, his home/road splits were drastic Home: .279/.382/.533.915 Road: .284/.349/.446/.795 The road line isn't too shabby, but his value was definitely enhanced by Yankee Stadium. At this point his defense is average to below average at the corner spots, though I'm not sure he's going to be in RF for any real workload given his terrible arm. For a LF-only guy that'd be in his age-36 season, playing anywhere aside from with the Yankees would probably just not be anywhere close to $13M in value.
  5. The Mets probably will be better off just going with Angel Pagan in CF. I really don't understand what value they believe Matthews brings aside from negative. I'm sure they could have found an equally terrible player to be their 4th or 5th OF for even cheaper than the $1M AAV they're giving Sarge Jr.
  6. I thought John Sickels summed up my feelings quite nicely in terms of Mat Gamel in his Jan. 4th Brewers Top 20 prospects list. It's easy to be a bit down on Gamel, but imo that's more due to Fielder's & Braun's relatively instant success at the MLB level. We seem to overlook that Gamel basically matched the league-avg. slash line for third basemen, and did so with the added hurdle of sporadic playing time... and I'm sure everyone remembers how well he performed when he actually did start (small sample of course, but imo a bit telling).
  7. I wonder if this all points to Salome not being in the Brewers' long term plans. Couldn't they have pushed them to play him more if they wanted him to get some in-game seasoning? I have to agree with ILDB -- why can't this point to the Brewers' main concern being that he work with Alberto Castillo? I think people are too quick to get down on prospects at times, since all that most of us have access to seeing is stats online. Stats are certainly one important element of player development, but so are the things you have to see in person to notice. I'm glad to hear Coach is feeling so confident in Angel's progress, and I look forward to seeing what a healthy Salome will be able to do in AAA or MLB this coming season. I think, to some extent, we as Brewers fans don't fully realize the great situation we have organizationally in terms of the catching position.
  8. I think our offense has taken a step down, but imo the pitching has a chance to be in the top of the NL after being at the bottom in 2009. It largely hinges on how well Bush rebounds from injury & whether or not Parra takes the step forward that I expect him to. Adding Wolf & Davis, while not frontline starters, gives the Crew two guys that pretty consistently give you good performance. With (what I expect) some natural progression from both Yo & Manny, along with a healthy Dave Bush, I think our pitching has the ability to be 180 degrees better than it was last season, which would probably actually make up for the step back in terms of the offense.
  9. In 2008, Gomez hit .258, stole 33 bases, scored 79 runs and knocked in 59. Forget his OBP, if he can duplicate those numbers, he'll be an offensive contributor. Forget his OBP? All the counting stats you listed, along with AVG, are very, very dependent upon getting on base.
  10. It is a good blog, though ... & I know that's not what you were getting at, cj.
  11. One attraction of being a FOX affiliate is that stations have much more control over their programming than those affiliated with NBC, ABC, and CBS, and I think we'd find that many wouldn't want to give up another hour to the network. Like statman said ("Hugh Grant interview"), O'Brien's a huge name & likely draw now. I just can't see his next show not drawing really strong numbers.
  12. "he looks the least like a professional athlete." I have to admit, this really cracked me up.
  13. Those pesky facts... they ruin everything!
  14. This is not something that I want but I've been making her unhappy for a while now. I guess I just didn't see it and when I tried to change it was too late. Right now she's angry with me. Moved out and avoiding me. I told her that i can accept that and that she needs to yell, scream and vent at me about how I hurt her. I love her so much and if we are going to get divorced I would like her to deal with it and be healthy. I know she loves me, she's just really hurt. Wow, I'm really sorry to hear about this, Marleyboo. I can't lend you any first-hand advice, but you guys are definitely in my thoughts. If it makes you feel any better, the way you're handling/going about everything seems very impressive.
  15. Fox, HBO, TBS, USA... wherever he winds up, imo Conan is going to pull strong ratings with a new show. I actually really like the idea of him on HBO -- Late Night... was always really creative & atypical, and HBO would really allow him to keep that style going strong. My dream scenario, I have to admit, is Conan getting the 11:35p ET timeslot & just murdering The Tonight Show... though with Letterman that would be a bit complicated.
  16. We already have that in Gerut. Career line v. RHP: .279/.339/.463/.803
  17. No, not maybe. 2009 ranks among qualified CFs -- OPS: 7th RC: 6th wOBA: 8th
  18. Agreed on Cameron. He was the king of the meaningless bomb, a-la Marquis Grissom, meaning that the game was generally already decided when he hit them. I think you mean a-la Alex Rodriguez, until a sample of 68 plate appearances in the 2009 postseason (compared to 9,611 in his regular season career) completely changed that supposed concrete truth. How many of his home runs were not solo shots or meant anything? I'm assuming you're only grousing about his time as a Brewer. 18 of his 49 HRs came with men on base (37%). Since I don't believe that there's such a thing as a HR that "doesn't mean anything", I won't bother trying to determine what types of situations would or wouldn't mean anything to you. Most of what I remember about Cam is cursing at the TV after he struck out again. Exactly.
  19. Cameron is and has been awful offensively. No, this is so wrong it's not even funny. He was top-10 in terms of MLB CFs last season. You take away the HR's Yeah, take away the most valuable thing a hitter can do. That's useful. Hey, if you take away Fielder's HRs, he's really just Casey Kotchman. What a bum!
  20. Hall had 214 at bats of a .606 OPS.*shudders* I guess I'd blacked that out of my memory.
  21. I agree. Andy made conan really funny back in the day. Glad to see he is back. The bit Richter had last week, addressed to "TV" about all the money he'd spent, & how he's been there for TV when TV needed him... was just hilarious.
  22. But many have overestated Cameron's offensive contributions It's the other way around. You continue to drastically undervalue his offense. I see slight upgrades at 3 positions, C, SS and 3B. How is 3B upgraded? McGehee turned in a career-type season, and we have the same personnel. Are you meaning that you think Gamel is going to take a step forward in 2010 & outproduce McGehee's 2009?
  23. Coffey is such a goofy guy. Really seems like he's down-to-earth, as well. Good for him to get this kind of payday.
  24. Anyone else think Sheets will be able to squeeze a guaranteed $9M or more outta Wilpon & the Mets?
  25. You have got to love the FA compensation system in MLB. They essentially traded Chone Figgins for the #1-18 pick. Now, about those Elias Sports Bureau rankings...
