  1. Vazquez would have to fall on his face to not be a Type A after 2010. There is no way the Braves offset the value of the comp picks they'd have gotten with this return imo. Guys like Cabrera are available on the FA market every year.
  2. The kicker to me is that Hart is a significantly better hitter than Cabrera, who isn't really that much better of a fielder than Corey (at least, not enough to offset the bat imo). So what would this have looked like from the Brewers' perspective? Hart+Bucci/Heckathorn? Hart+Bucci+Heckathorn? It seems Melvin wanted the certainty of having his 'big' newly-acquired SP around for more than just 2010.
  3. I think we've all learned that Jack Z. rarely gets fleeced. I think it's a bit early in his tenure to make a comment like this in either direction.
  4. The Brewers were actually a team I saw praised or noted quite a bit for signing guys at above slot value this past draft. The Yankees have done a nice job developing young talent the past few seasons, and while it's easy to point out their financial advantage, it's also easy to overlook the nice job they've done in not just trading everyone away for veterans. The addition of Vazquez is an absolutely ridiculous one. Kudos to Brian Cashman on this one. As previously noted, it doesn't even look like they had to give up anything of premium value. What a rotation.
  5. When I said 'no one doubts him' I meant in overall ability, not just hitting. I think he'll hit enough to justify a starting spot, but beyond that I'm not sure.
  6. Baseball Prospectus's book, Baseball Between the Numbers, studied this. Iirc they actually did find an uptick in player production.
  7. No one here doubts him. I'm not sure who is disagreeing that Escobar has the tools to be a really, really good player and/or All-Star.
  8. I'm not really sure that Sheets is on anyone's radar at this point. His agent's approach at the winter meetings was questionable. I think once Benny can prove he's healthy, the offers will be there. He'd improve any team's pitching staff.
  9. Fwiw, the beat writers at the LoHud Yankees blog have (for the past week or so) been tossing two names around as guys they think the Yanks might bring in on one-year deals: Duscherer & Sheets
  10. Melky is just not a good hitter. I'm really glad Melvin didn't trade for him. At least Gomez has offensive upside & is an outstanding defender. Given the fact that Swisher's a switch-hitter, Granderson's a lefty, & Damon (my own assumption that he'll be back in LF) is a lefty too, Cabrera makes the most sense as an OF supersub. He hits LHPing notably better than he does RHPing... which, granted, isn't saying much.
  11. The Yankees really have no reason to trade Swisher, and realistically can't upgrade in RF over his production without orchestrating a major trade. I think they're eventually just going to re-sign Damon once he & Boras get their heads out of the clouds. That'll shore up LF, and Swisher will once again be a solid compliment at the other corner spot.
  12. Thanks, bk. Nice find. I hope he can really take a step forward in 2010. His focus seems to be on track, and hopefully the optimistic talk about his command isn't just talk.
  13. Jones has stuff & velocity that Capuano can't even touch at this point... that's my guess why he'd be the one to go to AAA.
  14. FanGraph's Erik Manning weighs in: What are the Cubs Doing?
  15. And just about every team has at least one contract like this. Like Invader said, it sucks, but it's reality unfortunately with sky-high FA salaries.
  16. I don't really care for most of Capitol Brewery's offerings. I think they are mostly "thin" beer Autumnal Fire, man. Check it out next fall if you haven't already http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. He ascended quickly to the majors, had an amazing arm, was unspectacular in his initial tastes of the majors and because of the off-the-field problems, he was relegated to being a bullpen swingman. AL Cy Young winner Zack Greinke Their situations are different, though. Greinke's SAD was keeping him from pitching effectively at all, not really impacting his stamina. Greinke was ineffective because his mental problem wouldn't allow him to fully utilize his physical gifts. Morrow, on the other hand, has been able to utilize his best stuff & velocity (unlike Greinke). These are really two entirely different situations imo, aside from both being unique health problems. SI story on Greinke You can even check Greinke's avg. FB velocities here, and Morrow's here, just as some support for what I'm saying.
  18. I don't think Zduriencik has planned at any point on extending Lee. The reason the Phils shipped Lee out (reportedly) is that Lee had told them he's going to FA no matter what. I think Jack saw a shot to take the AL West in 2010, and took it. It appears the M's value the comp. picks they'll get for Lee more than the three prospects they shipped out to bring him in.
  19. Gamel projects to be a .280-20-80 type MLB hitter without a defensive home. Forecasting RBI & pretending like that has some descriptive value seems like a waste of time to me. Watching him play, imo he clearly has the tools to be a special defender at 3B, along with lots of BBs & power (more of a 30-HR guy than 20) at the plate. Of course, he's a guy that K's a good amount too. I think he could easily turn in a .250/.350/.450/.800 line in 2010, but Melvin seems to be in love with McGehee, so I'm still guessing Gamel gets dealt.
  20. Jim Hendry is a poor GM, that's how
  21. For Prince I might give up something like Ells, Lars Anderson, Michael Bowden, and another prospect (not named Westmoreland, Kelly, or Reddick). That night bot be quite enough though. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. I'd definitely throw in Almanzar. My (at best) semi-informed take on those prospects is the definition of a quantity deal. In dealing one of the best hitters in the game, I would rather target one or two very high-ceiling & productive players than take more guys with lesser talent.
  22. It's meaningless except that it demonstrates that the fielder didn't read the ball correctly. If that kind of thing happens sparingly, no big deal. But if you're have to turn around too much it will lead to horrible jumps on the ball way too frequently. I agree that Hall was passable in CF.
  23. Narveson, Butler, Jones, Braddock (Villy, like you said)... there's not just more depth, it's better quality depth too (at least imho)
  24. Oh, I realize you're not trying to sound down on him. I just think that GMs could easily be able to connect the dots as to the most logical reason Gamel stopped mashing at AAA. He did fine for his first call-up, but was understandably less than thrilled to be sent back to Nashville. And I do realize part of his job is to just hit wherever, but like someone said this offseason, these guys aren't robots.
