  1. So you want the Brewers to trade a pitcher that you think is bad, & somehow bring one in that is good?
  2. Bedard's health status (last I knew) was still a major deterrent to bringing him in. I agree that I'd like to see Melvin take a flyer on him -- even if he only contributes 100-150 IP, the quality you get over those innings is well worth a 1-yr. deal, imo. Best I can find is that Bedard is expected to be out through at least the first month of the '10 season, and that the most interest teams have been willing to show thus far seems mostly inquisitive.
  3. As long as the main guys stealing bases are Weeks & Escobar, while Hart & Braun keep their attempts reigned in (as they have over their careers), I think the Brewers will benefit. Really the only guys I ever want to see attempting a lot of steals are guys well over a 75% success rate, because outs on the basepaths are so costly. Imo Weeks is an awesome base-stealer, & if anything I'd like to see him run a bit more. However, that's a tad complicated when he's typically on-base with Fielder & Braun hitting.
  4. From Wolf's Fangraphs player page, over his career, he's worked with: FB: 88.2mph avg. velocity, thrown 61% of the time CB: 68.3, 19.9% CH: 77.1, 11.5% SL: 79.9, 7.5% It's worth noting that Wolf has trended away from using his change as much, in favor of his slider, the past two seasons. If anyone's at all interested in a basic look at what Wolf is like, the FanGraphs page is a quick & useful read.
  5. I think the Braves may have spread around that Vasquez is available in order to see if anyone would really step up & make an unbeatable offer. I agree that he's simply too good for a contending team to shop around for merely decent offers.
  6. Trenni rules. Hopefully Gammons will become the Andy Rooney of MLB Network, without the crazy.
  7. Best of luck to him, & appreciate the heads-up on his hitting.
  8. I think Hart's name comes up because he's not a guy that's all that hard to replace, he's young & has had success at the plate, and he's getting more expensive for the Brewers. Even with his pay-raises, he's still a good value if another team has a hole at RF. I think there's a pretty good chance he gets moved this offseason, but I wonder if he'd go to bring in a RP. I've read rumors that ATL wants to trade Rafael Soriano because of his contract situation (set to make ~$7M in arbitration), and they just non-tendered Ryan Church. I'd personally love to see Soriano in Milwaukee.
  9. One thing I think everyone can agree on is that the main concern here is spending big bucks on (older) FAs. This time it's Wolf (who's a better pitcher than Suppan is & was, imo), and last time it was Suppan. Even though the players & contracts are different, most seem to agree that opting for free agency to acquire good SPing is a bad idea. I think Crew07 has a decent beef with Melvin, and I'd love to see it proven wrong with a nice trade. Hopefully Rick Peterson can help Melvin identify which higher risk/reward pitchers to throw one-year deals at.
  10. I don't understand why people continue to insist on calling this a Suppan-like deal. There is no comparison, aside from the fact that both were FA targets.
  11. Jackson would certainly not step in & be a 30-HR threat next season; he's nowhere near the caliber of hitter Granderson is right now (basically a .900 OPS v. RHP talent that plays good defense & needs a platoon partner). One of the Yanks' beat writers (Tyler Kepner) put it best when he said that the Yankees feel like Granderson is Jackson's ceiling, so why not deal for Granderson now. I'm not sure what your point is regarding Granderson & Cabrera. Granderson is the far superior player on both O & D, even with his deficiencies against LHP. Cabrera will likely get a good amount of ABs against LHP next season, backing up all over the OF. Cabrera really hasn't demonstrated any kind of ability to hit RHP, so Granderson is just an ideal fit for NYY imho. Add to that the rumor circulating that Damon is seeking a 3 or 4 year deal.
  12. Smoltz will probably get around the ~$7.5M the Cards gave Penny for a one-year deal. I think Melvin must want to find an answer beyond just next season in terms of pitching. Even so, signing Wolf wouldn't necessarily stand in the way of bringing in someone like Smoltz.
  13. Yeah, my main problem is that Wolf isn't "mediocrity", JoeHova.
  14. Yeah -- and as for Yankees CFs, the one that's most expendable now is Brett Gardner. Melky doesn't hit well, but he at least favors LHP And I also agree that Damon & Matsui are likely gone. Especially with Matt Holliday available.
  15. So the point is that Livan Hernandez is only slightly worse than Randy Wolf?
  16. Exactly my thoughts, jwaltz. Big win by Dave Dombrowski -- especially getting Scherzer to basically replace Jackson perfectly.
  17. Nice, thanks for that update, sarge. Now I just have to hope Melvin targets something like Harden+Bedard instead of giving Doug Davis a 2 or 3 year deal.
  18. Whoa, that's pretty messed up, Hammer. Glad she at least feels ok. I know what I'll watch tonight! (Maybe also Mr. Plow.) "That name again is Mr. Plow" -- one of my all-time favorites, hawing. And thanks for the welcome-back.
  19. I've been reluctant in the past to cry 'foul' at the Brewers' medical processes/personnel, but I think I'm starting to feel more & more like the team needs to make a change there.
  20. Understood, but 5/$50M isn't that much worse than 4/$36M, especially if the production you get is better.
  21. Would Katin be a decent candidate to get selected? Of course his issue is still patience, but I thought he showed a bit of progress there last season, & his power is definitely legit.
  22. You would trade a guy that can give you roughly league-avg. ERA over 150+ innings for a short reliever?
  23. Latest from Buster Olney is that the BoSox "do not have serious interest in [him]" (via MLBTraderumors)
  24. Labeling this "The Suppan Contract" is a mistake. Wolf is a better pitcher than Suppan, the contract would be shorter, and for less money. There is no good comparison there.
  25. Sorta tricky to nail down what Edwin Jackson's price is, since it's a three-way deal. Would it be right to say that it's roughly Scherzer + Austin Jackson? Color me surprised that the DBacks wanted to move Scherzer to get Jackson. I just don't see a huge difference between the two, and Jackson is more expensive.
