  1. Dave Cameron, candid at FanGraphs with his take: The Worst Signing of the Winter I really liked this quip -- "I'm one of those people who doesn't really enjoy Saturday Night Live sketches, because to me, the joke is made in the first 15 seconds and then just repeated over and over for the next several minutes. You drive a Dodge Stratus and you think that makes you important - okay. Not much funnier the 15th time you yell it. Not to me, anyway. Ed Wade is the GM equivalent of a bad SNL sketch. The first time he overpaid a middle reliever, we figured out that he didn't really know how to build a roster. Now, when he gives Brandon Lyon a 3 year, $15 million deal, we just shrug our shoulders and say, "Yeah, that's Ed Wade for ya."
  2. This is certainly true, but over the past two seasons, Harden's avg. fastball velocity has dropped. From 2004-'07, his FB averaged right around 94 mph. In '08 & '09, it sat at 92 mph. He could certainly regain some of that velocity, but I'm not sure that's likely. Regaining velocity is another reason why I'd like to see him pursued as a RP in 2011... but that's me rambling now.
  3. Can Amezaga man SS competently? I realize he wouldn't have spent much time there with FLA, given Ramirez, but I'm just curious.
  4. I think that's a real waste of MLB service time. I definitely don't want to see the Brewers go that route, and fortunately I think they won't (given Kottaras). That's true, and I agree that this is a good 'problem' to have. I just think that since it'd be better -- on an individual basis -- to have Lucroy & Salome both getting a full workload at catcher at the AAA level, there's a good chance one of them gets traded. You're right to highlight the ways in which they could both get their work in, though.
  5. This is what I think, too. Rivera's done in Milwaukee. Kottaras + Zaun = bye bye Mike. I wonder if he'll wind up signing a minor league deal to backup Lucroy and/or Salome.
  6. If I remember my Baseball Between the Numbers/Baseball Prospectus correctly, there is a tiny demonstrable effect that basestealers have on pitchers, but it's not enough to worry about when talking about player value.
  7. From what little I've read on Bono & Bryan, they're not considered top prospects... just better than the "nothing" FLA would have gotten for non-tendering Lindstrom. This is a decent pickup for the 'Stros if they indeed didn't have to give up much, given Lindstrom's possible upside/sell-high potential.
  8. Wow, nice win for UWGB. Crappy loss for the Badgers right now... though if GB is indeed legit, a close road loss like this shouldn't hurt come Selection Sunday.
  9. Thanks, packfan (& others) -- I'll have to look around...
  10. Link The two players from HOU so far: P Robert Bono IF Luis Bryan
  11. One thing I've been wondering about, if Harden only pitches a short season in '10, is how realistic targeting him as a bullpen arm would be. He cut way down on using his slider back in 2007 with Oakland, presumably to reduce wear & tear on his arm/shoulder. He didn't throw the pitch at all in 2009, and has essentially been a FB/CH pitcher for three seasons running. Both his FB & CH appear to be good pitches, and I have little doubt Harden could be an elite bullpen arm. I'm sure he'll want to remain a SP, but if he can't pitch a full season in this coming campaign, he really won't have much argument that he should be considered a starter imo.
  12. Unless I'm misreading Russ, he means that he expects Harden's production in 2010 (over fewer IP than Wolf) to be roughly equal to Wolf's production in 2010, because he believes Harden will turn in the better-quality innings.
  13. The value Lowell would provide in limited playing time would not be worth losing Coffey.
  14. FanGraphs/Erik Manning on why Wolf's signing is not similar to Suppan's
  15. Might as well post this on Hawkins, too... (via FanGraphs) FB: 93.5 mph (career avg.), thrown 75% of the time (career avg.) SL: 87.5 mph, 11.5% CB: 79.4 mph, 7.7% CH: 83.5 mph, 5.6% Hawkins has trended away from his FB over the course of his career. This has been especially true for the past three seasons, working more with his secondary pitches -- esp. the slider, but also his curve. This is a guy that should reasonably pitch at a level of ~4.00 xFIP. While I don't like seeing a relatively large FA contract go to another RP, Hawkins should be worth the deal, provided he stays healthy.
  16. Is the game televised? I actually can watch the Big Ten network, so I hope it's at least on there.
  17. From what I can find online, Correia stands to make around $3M in arbitration. Please get this done, Mr. Melvin!
  18. Gomez's rates in the minors were overall very good. He's a guy that I think could improve a lot in terms of base-stealing with some more coaching, but not someone I want to see running with a constant green light just yet.
  19. If that's true, there's really no reason Melvin couldn't bring him in. I hope he does.
  20. I agree on Hart, wishicouldhit. I thought he showed some encouraging signs last season, and then got smacked with the emergency appendectomy. If he comes out of the gates well in '10, I also wouldn't mind seeing Melvin try to sell-high on him in order to bring in some pitching.
  21. Correia would be a nice pickup. If the Pads are mainly looking to cut costs, would it take much more than an offer of, say, Dillard+Iribarren? I'd actually like to see the Hurricane on the 25-man in 2010, but I'd rather have Correia.
  22. The fact that he's a low-OBP RHB, while our OF starts three RHB, makes me think he really has no role in MIL for the forseeable future. Especially with Gerut around. He could easily fit in with another team (w/a more LH heavy OF), however. His power will always draw some attention.
  23. Well thank goodness Wolf *did* sign. This thread title still troubles me, even though I know it can't hurt me anymore.
  24. Oh, my comment was in no way directed at Wolf's value, sorry.
