  1. I found it so interesting & funny that homer quoted almost the exact same segment I did, that I decided to just post it anyway. I can see why you stay at GW, Coach Steve, and whether you really realize it or not, those kids are lucky that you do. I know it's easy to read a quote like, 'I'd probably be a drug dealer or something' & get that you're important to these kids... but I'd bet the extent of the impact you've made would probably even surprise you. I have no doubt you have changed the lives of these young men more than you will probably ever know. Like twobrewers said, the players have clearly affected you as well, and it's just a beautiful thing. Glad to hear you get some time to unwind like with the Phish shows occasionally, Coach, and best of luck as you continue onward. Glad you take the time to drop by & chat with us occasionally http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  2. Geez, come on. I think we need to cool off here. There's just no reason I can imagine for Coach to come here & essentially lie, which is what the accusations seem to be at this point. Not only does that not make sense, it's an insult as well. This is a great thread that's taken a really crappy & unnecessary turn. I hope the discussion can get back on track so we don't see such a useful thread locked. I've been enjoying reading this thread on a near-daily basis since it was started, and now it's just turned into this? Weak. Coach, I'm glad you decided to come back & post some more. Your insights are always welcome, and I hope that in the future our community doesn't rake you over the coals like has been happening over the past week or so. It's disappointing to see that kind of reception for anyone. I can understand Coach's frustration on this angle... he's not only stated multiple times, but clarified multiple times that he said that in his opinion, Lucroy was atrocious in one game. The stubbornness running rampant right now just serves no purpose whatsoever.
  3. I agree with most that Bud the Commish has been pretty good & definitely over-criticized. However, I'm hopeful that his moving on will open up expansion of instant replay & technological innovations in the game's officiating (discussed at length in the 'Worst Call of the Year' thread). It's long overdue, and imho an embarrassment to baseball at this point.
  4. If Gamel's on the 25-man out of ST & Escobar is hitting in the 2-slot over him, I'll be very disappointed in Ken Macha (can't say I'd be *that* shocked, though). I also wouldn't be surprised to see Gomez out-produce Escobar in 2010.
  5. Hah... NG's Snowshoe is next on my list/in the fridge. I tend to like Red Ales, so I'm guessing this will be no different. Oh, and the Capital Skal is really good as well.
  6. Gobias: Thank you for linking that video. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. I still can't decide which hit I like more... but I was definitely waiting for when I could see "Sevilla" on the back of a black jersey in the second clip. Like a heat-seeking missle. FtJ: Glad to see another rockin' Tate Jr. highlight reel. Keep 'em coming, of course http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. I just tried a 2-below yesterday, and I like it too. Had the NG Staghorn (Oktoberfest) for the first time as well... very good Oktoberfest brew. I hope we can get some more 'winter warmer' reviews in the coming days/weeks... there's a lotta great stuff out there this time of year. I'm going to have some Capital Winter Skal tomorrow.
  8. Agreed, yoshii. I'll be surprised if both MU & UW aren't in the Top 25 relatively soon.
  9. Glad to see the voters got the MVPs & CYs right for both leagues. Mauer certainly deserved it, and as FtJ noted, is just on a different level from the rest of the current MLB catchers.
  10. If we're so worried about 3b, go to Boston and supposedly they are begging to give up Lowell That's because he's not really durable anymore & really can't handle everyday playing time. Not to mention the fact that he's 36 in 2010 & very likely to decline.
  11. I also love the part where Burwell states Yeah, what a choker. Nothing says 'laying an egg' better than a 3.15 ERA. *gigantic eye-roll*
  12. That's good to hear, Bryan, so simpletons like you stop ruining player awards voting. Yes, and they did... hence the tight 3-horse race & finish. Does this guy follow baseball at all? The 4th-place player received 3 votes. 3!!!
  13. Hard not to feel like this is just the beginning of the PR push from the Brewers. There's just no way the Brewers are going to get much of a bargain/discount, & I really don't see what Prince has to gain by not hitting the open market.
  14. "Braves right-hander Derek Lowe turns 37 on June 1. He is guaranteed $15 million in each of the next three seasons. And he had a 6.65 ERA in his final nine starts." I just loved reading this. The length of that contract offered by ATL was just unintelligent. It really doesn't sound like the Brewers are seriously considering a Hart--Lowe swap (unless of course the Braves eat a lot of Lowe's remaining money), and I'm glad to 'hear' that.
  15. Yeah, judging from the apparent love-fest with Lucroy this offseason & the lack of praise for Salome in general, I think Melvin knows who his guy is.
  16. I'll stay away from my opinion on TH or AW, but a paper that carries two beat writers really can't afford to send one of them to Arizona to cover things first-hand? Once again TH just digs through the boxscores, just like Maas Hass, except not as well. As Patrick mentioned in post #181, stats in the AFL (good or bad) just usually aren't that meaningful. How have Butler's offspeed pitches he's been working on looked? Progression? Regression? How about getting some comments from scouts on Lucroy & his defense? Etc., etc. It's just frustrating imo.
  17. However, I do not see the niche for him in MIL How can you not see the niche? Patrick laid it out perfectly in his post right before yours... not to mention that Hernan would be able to see a lot of 'one & done' PH appearances for the pitcher.
  18. I don't think anyone's noted this here yet, but Lincecum is actually the second pitcher ever to win the CY without also getting the largest tally of first-place votes. 11-12-9 ... Lincecum (100 TP) 9-14-7 ... Carpenter (94 TP) 12-5-15 ... Wainwright (90 TP)
  19. "He's good defensively. He was the personal catcher for Wakefield much of this past season and he did a great job handling the knuckler with a minimum of passed balls. That's no minor achievement--they tried Josh Bard a couple years ago and he couldn't handle it at all. Kottaras also throws better than Varitek." Ok, that's good enough for me. I thought I remembered something about Kottaras that'd speak well to his defense -- it was the personal catcher for Wakefield thing, but I couldn't recall it. The more I learn about Kottaras, the more I love this pickup. A LHB catcher with (at worst) solid defense, good pop, & good patience? You can't really even find that on the FA market, & Melvin nabbed him basically for free.
  20. I like that aspect of possibly dealing for Halladay at this point. My only concern would be overpaying for one season of the guy. I wouldn't want to send Gamel or Lawrie, and would hesitate to send either Lucroy or Salome (unless the price wasn't much higher than one of them alone). Would an offer of McGehee + Salome/Lucroy be enough from TOR's perspective? Would it be too much from the Brewers'? I get the feeling that TOR could do better than that, but I'm not sure I'd want Melvin to increase that hypothetical offer.
  21. I've always thought that Redd is the type of guy who would flourish being the second option on offense instead of the number one. That was my thought, too, RockCo. It would seem a dangerous scoring threat at PG like Jennings would lead to a lot more kick-out and/or open 3-pt. shots for Mike.
  22. Deep in mediocrity. I disagree -- as far as college guards go, Hughes & Bohannon are both very good (esp. Hughes, imo).
  23. One thing Funketown's list of former catchers made me wonder is whether or not Melvin has contacted (or plans to contact) Henry Blanco. A few other posters have brought him up as a stop-gap, & I think he'd be a good idea. Who knows, maybe Blanco will be in higher demand this offseason than he has been in years past.
  24. Given the catcher position in general, I'm not sure that our alternatives are weak. I think the fact that we have both Salome & Lucroy is a nice (semi-)luxury. I agree with the notion that one of those two will be dealt before ST, and the addition of Kottaras (.235/.322/.386/.708 CHONE projection) gives a bit more flexibility. All 3 players project to be better offensive options than Kendall, & the Brewers seem very confident in the defense of Lucroy.
  25. Ok, so the excuse for Butler is he's working on secondary pitches. I thought the AFL was more to identify who the true prospects were by matching up each teams better prospects than it is for working on different things. That's what the instructional league is for isn't it? No, it's not an excuse. It's what he's doing. The AFL is for whatever the players & organizations determine. To say you'd weed out the true prospects is like saying you can see the 'real ballplayers' just from the small sample of Spring Training. Frankly, I don't quite buy the he's "working on pitches". Well, you're wrong then, because he is. I think it's more it's Arizona where offense rules and he's facing a lot of good hitters and frankly, Butler is a marginal prospect compared to most in this league. I think you're definitely right that AZ & facing a lot of good hitters isn't easy, but you should probably look around at the AFL pitching stats in general before rushing to assumptions. There aren't many guys pitching to good results, even though stats/results are out of incredibly tiny samples, & not really reliable at all. The league ERA at the moment is 5.22.
