  1. Yeah, I know they definitely deserve(d) praise, but even with that in mind it seemed way over the top at times. Maybe I'm the only one that felt that way.
  2. I wasn't comparing the two, I was referring to the notion that Kapler could have been paired in a CF platoon with Gerut.
  3. From his second blog post... Sounds like Wednesday will definitely be a day to check in on Butler's performance. He sounds like he's going to update the blog several more times before the AFL ends, & he also seems to have a decent sense of humor. He goes on to answer some questions posted in the comments on his first entry...
  4. I know many don't like this matchup (& I understand why), but I like the fact that this series features two franchises with such long histories. The modern-day Phillies franchise started up in 1883 (!) as the Philadelphia Quakers, changing to the current name in 1890. The Yankees franchise began in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, became the New York Highlanders in 1903, and finally... the Yankees in 1913. Yes, I am a baseball geek.
  5. There was one thread that turned into a big debate, where that was discussed. Can't remember which one. I think the best way to look at it is the $ value is what the production, not the player, was worth. It's too bad that Kapler re-signed with the Rays, since he'd have been a perfect fit if the Brewers decide not to retain Cameron. Please don't decide to do that, Brewers. I am, however, glad that Gabe's decision to return to playing has worked out so well for him. I wonder why he decided to retire in the first place. EDIT: Found some interesting quotes from Gabe... this one from his Wikipedia page, on why he went to play for the Yomiuri Giants in 2005: And on his retirement in 2006:
  6. If I'm the Brewers, I use Fielder's natural own competitive nature to emphasize that as a Brewer he's not only a bat, but a leader on the field defensively, the same as Pujols. I'd also mention to him that playing the field for 7 or 8 more years enhances his credentials as a future HOFer. Interesting points in that post, Briggs. I hadn't thought of that angle in terms of using it as a sort of leverage. I hope that would resonate with Prince, but I wonder if he'd just be able to basically demand that any AL team seeking his services would have to agree to play him at 1B. He has the kind of bat that can make you stomach less-than-stellar defense. And this is slightly off-topic, but did anyone else really get the impression from the FSN broadcasts & team official comments throughout the season that the Brewers really were stroking the egos of both Prince & Braun this season? I can't remember any specific examples, but oftentimes it seemed like an organizational policy to just gush over the top with praise for those two.
  7. And offensive production for a guy that can play the infield is, of course, more valuable than that of an OFer. Pods is basically replacement level overall, & definitely is when considering his position (LF), with the exception of maybe two seasons (one of which was '09). Like you said earlier, Briggs, it's not likely to backfire, and I wish Bourgeois well.
  8. Also off-topic... but I saw Terry Porter leaving a restaurant with his family the other night a few blocks from my place here in Portland. I told the gf & a friend we were walking with (she's not a big sports fan) who he was, & the friend said, "Oh, that tall black man? I wondered if he was a basketball player but then I just thought I was being racist."
  9. It is a joke if it only affects one team. Wouldn't the fact that only one team exceeds the 'luxury cap' (or however I should phrase it) indicate that it is working?
  10. I don't understand why the thread needs to be another moan fest about WAR & Fangraphs. It's useful information just to talk about Kapler re-signing with Tampa. The $ value is how much production was worth in a vacuum, based on how MLB teams spend. It doesn't factor in age, so who cares?
  11. I know I've been very outspoken in my criticism of TH at times. I really don't think he's a bad beat reporter, but I just don't think he's a good one. Like colbyjack said, we all have access to the stats -- and in that case Mass Haas does a far better job at keeping us informed. It would be interesting imo for Tom to maybe do a phone interview, or talk to some Brewers personnel to get some info that fans can't access on their own. Call me a dreamer, but I don't believe a beat writer should limit his product to what the casual fan wants.
  12. D'oh! Sorry Nate, and sorry for the confusion, Crew http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That's what I get for not actually quoting the post.
  13. I don't mean to sound unappreciative of the blog entry, since I'll take any news I can get this time of year, but Tom has enough resources to tap into to get some early impressions of their performances. We all have access to the stats No, that's exactly what I thought too, colby. It's definitely ok to demand better from what is typically pretty average coverage from TH.
  14. I think the main difference between the two is that we saw McGehee's upside in '09, whereas Gamel's 'bad' year was league-avg. for a 3Bman (as logan pointed out)... and Gamel has a ceiling higher than McGehee both in the field & at the plate. I think they're both good players, but Gamel is a much bigger talent overall. I agree with folks that have said McGehee would likely return a mid or back-end rotation SP.
  15. A 28-yo OF with a career .727 OPS in the minors is hardly someone to worry about losing. I hate how negative this sounds against Jason, but he's basically the definition of replacement-level.
  16. I never knew Jay Fiedler was a two-sport star! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I still think the chances of re-signing Prince are pretty remote, but what the Brewers can eventually get in return via trade will probably make it all worthwhile.
  17. So, how much of this (at least on MM's part) is meant to "reintroduce" to fans, get over the steriod thing, make a better last impression on fans, and increase his chances of making the HOF? That's what I thought when I saw this hire, Cheez Wiz. Given LaRussa's man-crush on Mac, his job security has to be pretty solid, and if the Cardinals improve on their 2009 offense, bam -- he's a savior & all-around classy guy.
  18. Great to see things up & running so well, colby. Best of luck to you... I'll sure be dropping by often. Have you thought about arranging any interviews with upcoming prospects? That could be a neat feature to set you apart from 'other' draft/prospect sites.
  19. I don't want to see what happened to Gamel happen to Salome. I completely agree on this one, Crew07. I would rather just not rush Angel & plan on having him at AAA for all 2010. Of course, Lucroy & Salome both being in the picture complicates that kind of plan... which is why I think one will be shipped out this offseason. I honestly don't know which one I would prefer to see retained or dealt. Seems like a very good 'bad' situation for the Crew.
  20. This thread title needs to be changed, it makes it sounds like there's at the very least, a shady source of information here, and there isn't. It's one guy who doesn't believe a pitcher can't throw a ball away in a tight spot. I agree with RoCo... very misleading.
  21. Acta is a guy I hoped the Crew would consider, so I too think this is a nice hire for CLE.
  22. MLB umpires are the best of the best. This is just a huge assumption. What they are is protected by a strong union, and not held very accountable for their failings. It's a job that is almost impossible to lose, which is why MLB is stuck with such mediocrity.
  23. I'm not an angels fan but it's upsetting to see them lose because of clearly bad umpiring and seemingly terrible coaching decisions to take out Lackey who was flawless nearly all night. Lackey was over 100 pitches, and was demonstrating little to no command of his fastball (iirc the velocity was down, too), and very shaky command of his curve. I thought Scioscia made the right call, and his bullpen failed him.
  24. Per the NY Post, turns out Deadspin was right on another (if you count them knowing about Phillips's situation last month as well) rumor.
  25. Braun is promoting his clothing line by offering a free autographed baseball for the first 100 orders over $150 from his website Link
