  1. But I think you have to ask yourself if adding a 4-ish ERA pitcher really makes that kind of impact or not.
  2. Yeah, I actually was startled to see how hard Mat was running out that grounder against the Cards last night. The thought of Gamel having *ahem* regular playing time this season, coupled with another offseason/ST to work on his defense with Money and/or Randolph, really is promising.
  3. I want no part of a deal that sends Parra as part of a package for Peavy. Honestly Parra's production going forward shouldn't be all that different from Peavy's recent road stats (thanks to zzzman for posting those; post #599)
  4. I'm sorry if I offended you Crew07, but I still think it was an off-base comment, and a lazy argument. Ennder does not dismiss things simply because there isn't a stat, and quite frankly I just get tired of seeing that line thrown at people that do place more value in stats than others.
  5. I don't think anybody is saying he is a great player. I'd typed "... is that Hart isn't a good player", but I just felt bad typing that... so I changed it to "great" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. Yeah, I feared Salome was dealing with more back WOAHs. Great news, and great updates as always Mass Haas.
  7. Oh, it was intended to be kind of conservative... I always feel that way about projecting guys' lines, esp. since I'm really not a stats expert at all. Not even close.
  8. Regardless of the sample size, it is intentionally picking a time when he played poorly. To be fair, the assertion (if I may take this liberty) is that Hart is not a great player, and said sample represents his true talent -- where 2007 does not. Not saying I really agree with that, but I do think it's relevant to point to this sample when the sample is lining up with one's opinion of Hart. EDIT: Couple of typos... bad ones http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. OK... fair enough Josh, & thanks for commenting a bit further.
  10. The kid was posting an OPS in the 2008 Russell Branyan stratosphere down in Nashville though. There really is every reason to expect much more from Gamel than a typical rookie. He's just not a typical rookie. And fwiw, here is his MLE line, based on 2008 Huntsville stats: .275/.328/.434/.762 And that's 2008 Gamel. Clearly 2009 Gamel is better than that. And just so I'm putting myself out there, I think it's very reasonable to forecast somewhere around a .350 OBP & .450 SLG for Gamel, given full-time duty this season.
  11. That's interesting, and must mean there's something tangible going on. Especially considering how adamant Haudricourt was earlier this year that Peavy was absolutely not coming to Milwaukee. That was my first thought upon seeing that too, Invader. The only thing I really worry about with Peavy is that contract after 2009: 2010: $15M 2011: $16M 2012: $17M 2013: $22M club option ($4M buyout) In addition, here's how Cot's breaks down the no-trade clause in Peavy's contract -- full no-trade clause for 2010, may block trades to 14 clubs in 2011 and 8 clubs in 2012 (also earns 10-and-5 rights in 2012) While I think he's a very good pitcher, PetCo has really enhanced his overall stats, and imho there's a lot of risk in that contract for a team like the Brewers. We have a lot of talented players that are going to get very expensive over the course of Peavy's deal.
  12. I think people are getting carried away. I really don't think so. Mat Gamel is the 3rd most talented hitter in this organization, and imho that includes considering a healthy Weeks. And I'm obviously a huge Weeks guy. The gifts that Gamel possesses are just tremendous. Sure it was just one swing, but that HR he hit in St. Louis was a swing that very, very few hitters at any level would be able to drive the ball with, let alone hit it out off a MLB pitcher. The guy is legit. And just to be clear I am not projecting a Braun-esque rookie season for Mat. But I think he's clearly our best option at 3B right now.
  13. If someone hasn't come up with a way to measure a statistical impact, you don't believe, it's that simple. I'm sorry, but that's a ridiculous thing to throw at Ennder, and honestly just a lazy argument.
  14. Yeah, this was awesome. Glad you posted it here. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. You really won't even pitch in & comment on a guy's velocity? That doesn't seem to have anything to do with whether you represent him or not.
  16. Is a Counsel/Hall platoon at 2B suddenly worse than it was at 3B a few weeks ago? No, but Counsell has had to play a lot more with Hardy's injury, and to me it just underscores that we need more depth in the MIF. The problem imo isn't that Counsell & Hall aren't a solid choice for a platoon, it's that with just one injury to the IF (like Hardy's), Counsell, McGehee, & Hall will all see too much playing time (imho). All three of those guys are very solid in terms of being depth, but not one of them should be getting regular playing time. Also, I think we already know what we have with Gamel -- the 3d best hitter on this team. Why Macha continues to let him rot on the bench is beyond me, and honestly has me quite pissed right now.
  17. Given the current weaknesses elsewhere, the only real alternative seems to be Counsell playing pretty much everyday and batting lead off. Anyone like that idea? No. And I like Counsell. I think how well the Brewers played for a month is skewing perspective here I don't at all. I think people are reacting very reasonably to what is a huge weakness on this team right now, and a very concerning problem moving forward. I also just want to address Invader's post -- I don't agree that bringing in another MIF would be too expensive right now, unless by that you meant that the Brewers should wait until teams start to truly fall out of contention to attempt to swing a trade. The longer the Brewers limp along without addressing the problems in the infield, the less margin for error this team has. Imo the Cubs are clearly a team that isn't going to run away with anything, and the Cards just aren't a complete team either. Imho this division is the Brewers' for the taking, but obv. with Weeks out that task has become much, much trickier.
  18. Like I said before, this was not some easy call that got blown. If anything I think the ump got the call right in reversing it, and regardless of what people think, it's absolutely 100% ok for an umpire to change his call. You just usually don't see it because MLB umps are pretty dang good, and many of them have egos too big to admit the few times they are wrong.
  19. Outfielders play little league depth against Kendall and that eliminates bloop hits from his arsenal. They need to get Rivera in there a lot more. If Rivera played more, he's probably no better than a .250-.260 hitter but he can drive the ball. Kendall can't. To me that's exactly where this discussion is right now. While I agree with FtJ's general sentiment that our backups aren't magically going to produce at a high level, when it comes to Kendall there is just no redeeming value in his playing over Rivera at this point. And just because I so strongly agree, I have to repeat what Briggs said -- Rivera can drive the ball. While his OBP skills will probably never be as strong as Kendall's have been, right now Mike gives pitchers a reason to be careful. Jason just does not. I'm sure he's a great teammate, and certainly is one heck of a defender (throwing issues aside), but right now Kendall as our starter is costing this team runs & wins.
  20. Just when I thought baseball was clean, this really raises my eyebrows Honestly I think baseball is nowhere close to being clean. What can baseball do at this point? Take more of the players' money. The reason guys abuse PEDs is to make more money, so take more of it away when they're busted. I'd also like to see a two-strikes & you're out policy. I'm 100% tired of the [crap] about, 'Oh, I didn't know what was in my supplement!' Instead of it being MLB's job to check out every lame-o excuse that accompanies these failed tests & resulting suspensions, the responsibility needs to be shifted much more onto the players. Everybody pee in a cup every week and if you are caught, your team forfeits games? I think I would be all for that. I want clean baseball. I want that too, man. Trouble is that there will always be drugs out there that are ahead of the tests, but I won't for one second try to pretend that MLB has ever done or is doing everything in its power to bring the abuse of PEDs to an end. We will continue to see guys get busted, and the offenders will continue to come from all points of the talent spectrum. MLB has a serious, serious drug culture, and at this point guys have built entire careers off of it. There's just no reasonable expectation that any abusers are going to stop now. Imo they have to be caught & forced to stop... and the only language most of these guys seem to understand is money
  21. At this point I'm really thinking that Melvin is going to have to address 2B with a trade -- and soon. I just can't see DM being comfortable with Counsell & McGehee there for the rest of this season. There are guys out there that wouldn't cost a king's ransom & would very much improve 2B. I won't start a list, since this isn't the Transactions forum. With Hardy's health seeming in question right now, I just don't see how another solid MIF wouldn't help. We have Iribarren in AAA, but I'd prefer to see him as injury insurance than a viable starting option (not meant as a knock on the Hurricane).
  22. I apologize for what may be an obvious question here, but what is going on with Hardy? Counsell has started 5 games in a row now. Like I said I may have just missed something (chat talk was that Hardy's expected to be out 'a few more days', per Ueck). Why not just DL the guy retro-active to whatever date, and let him get healthy? The lack of updates on J.J.'s status is concerning to me... no news always makes me think bad news. EDIT: Tonight's start actually makes it 6 in a row for Counsell
  23. I'd put Colby, Mass, And That, Pogo... basically all of our staffers up against TH any day of the week. Oh absolutely... now give us free stuff! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/devil.gif
