  1. Loathe ESPN; would pick FSN. The few times I've seen The Final Score, it's been much more enjoyable than SC.
  2. Vargas at $3 mil Yes, since Vargas wouldn't go to AAA with us, Weaver is a great fit. Plus, I guarantee you the deal is for much less than $3 mil. (not that that makes me intelligent, says Captain Obvious...) unless Jeff somehow pitches himself up through a season with us... in which case it'd be worth whatever relatively low cost he'd hit. I like the move; as others have mentioned, another nice low-risk/high reward move by Melvin & Co. EDIT: I sure hope Bush is injured (as odd as that sounds), because I'd rather that be true than him simply starting to stink it up.
  3. I shouldn't need somebody to point out how much of a slacker I have been, but I do. This point is still under review... Yes! You do need someone to point this out. Slacker. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif If i remember right, on average, the performed to their normal level after the rocky start. To be honest, that's neither surprising nor counter-intuitive. If anything, my guess prior to Russ's post would have been that SPs would outperform their 'norms'... on average given the situation.
  4. Thank you for the 3 year splits though. Very interesting. Agreed -- I should've noted that earlier.
  5. First, Riske's a good pitcher, so while he may not be the ideal closer, it's certainly not ridiculous. Riske's good enough that I hope he isn't forced into the 'closer' role.
  6. If that's the case, good job on selling high by Ricciardi.
  7. So, a hypothetical question for all you men: if you MUST see a female commentator, would you rather she be extremely unattractive and really know what she's talking about, or be drop-dead gorgeous and have the baseball knowledge of a 2-year-old? Knowledge, knowledge, knowledge. Ann Carrrrrolllllll (never know how to spell that name http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) had neither imo, but I would have loved her just as much as it sounds like I will Trenni if Ann had the baseball savvy down. Heck, even just knowing guys' names would've felt ok after the crap we watched in 2007.
  8. Also when you look at Turnbow's stats from last year you will find something rather interesting. He does worse against #6 and #7 hitters than he does against #3 to #5 hitters. Also when you look at his other stats you will see that Turnbow is best when given 1 or 2 days off. When he pitches back to back games last year he had these stats. But it's how he did, not a predictive 'how he does'. I think that's really important to bear in mind. You'd have to have a lot more than just one season -- especially for a RP -- to be able to try & conclude anything about how Derrick does v. different parts of the lineup.
  9. I'm not sure why people think we should have gotten a huge haul for Overbay... everyone knew he was going to be moved to make room for Prince. I found myself wishing the past two seasons that where Overbay was moved would have been to LF... but then again, Bush has given some very strong innings, too. Probably a fair trade, and I imagine Jackson was a sort of throw-in.
  10. Kinda makes sense, since the middle relievers tend to be the least-talented on the roster, & SPs could be facing the order that dreaded 3d time through. Spock would say there is a time where logic dictates an emotional response. That, sir, is awesome. This needs to get used repeatedly this season. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  11. The guy: "Yeah, I have been following his progress." Now if that is not annoying I don't know what is. Maybe he was mistaking Nix for Nelson Cruz? ... and is still idiotic? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  12. Is the 8 E's in 12 games a small sampling, or do you feel it's indicative of his true talent? I'd guess the Brewers don't yet feel the latter is the case, or the switch would probably get made -- as you mentioned, why wait? Also keep in mind that E's aren't always a good indicator of defensive talent, or even results sometimes. To be fair, you're obv. not the first observer to have serious concerns about Brent's D.
  13. One thing I really like about Yost is that he doesn't like to give outs away with sac bunts & hit-&-runs (a la his counterpart Piniella) very often at all. Imo Ned values his offensive outs quite appropriately most times, and probably is better than most MLB managers in this regard.
  14. Well, when your best backup in case of an injury to options 1 & 2 is Moeller, and you're trying to win the AL East, imo that's a pretty big weakness. At least for the Brewers, we've got Munson, who's young & still has some pop in his bat. Moeller is just below-avg. across the board. I think you're right that I overstated this as though the Yanks had the worst C depth in MLB, but I don't think that Moeller as #3 is very good, even with the positional weakness taken under consideration.
  15. The players selected need to surpass whatever Will and Steve do at the Major League level. What they've done so far has not won an MLB team a single game. That's a tad absolutist, though -- besides, if one argues that adding Linebrink helped us win games, then the duo has done some part to help the Brewers. Imo you have to look at it in terms of likelihood, and a guy that has had success at AA like Inman is so much more likely to make the bigs than a draft pick that's never been tested beyond HS or college. Obviously with certain players the chances that they fail are small, but when you're comparing a guy with success at AA with the HS/college guy, the odds heavily favor the AA guy.
  16. Braun has never had to adjust to MLB pitching adjusting to him before. I'd guess (just a guess) that it's going to take a bit longer than him re-adjusting in college & the minors. He's such a student of his own game that I'd be surprised if his approach doesn't improve at this level, just as it did at the lower levels.
  17. I did read what you said -- what I was responding to was the notion that Jenks didn't really deserve all the fan-fare. Plus, what I quoted was about a Standing O, as opposed to just some 'cheers'. We'll agree to disagree, I guess. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. Plus, we kinda come to this forum to discuss baseball, as opposed to the discussing being a peripheral part of the experience like it is when you're at the ballpark.
  19. there would have been a huge hole in the pen when Villanueva moved to the rotation, if you figured Thatcher would have pitched closer to whats expected of a rookie. Well, I think in terms of a balance or 'cost' analysis, given what we got from Linebrink & what we gave up, it was a very bad trade. Even if Thatcher didn't pitch as well as he did with SD, getting those 25 innings from him at average production without having to part with our most advanced pitching prospect this side of Parra would have been extremely valuable. Now this season if we lose a player for a full season, and feel that we need to add from outside the org., the trading chips we have are either way too important to the team's future (LaPorta, Parra), or very far away from proving they can fulfill even a part of their ceilings (Jeffress, Salome, etc.). In the end, all we will lose in this deal is our newly drafted prospects will be a couple of years behind Garrison and Inman. But that's assuming the players selected even live up to what Will & Steve have done thus far. No matter how great the scouting director/system, there are always variables at play that are totally out of anyone's control. It sounds dumb I suppose, but I usually pair them up in mind That's not dumb at all -- it really helps temper expectations. In fact, I wonder how accurate a 50% success rate is in terms of higher-ceiling pitchers... can't be that far off.
  20. Well they dug it up (why, I have no idea) Because it's Yankees-Red Sox mental instability. Did you hear how they were talking about it during the game on ESPN last night? I regretfully admit that I endured yet another Sunday Night Baseball broadcast, with its 'announcing.' The talk was literally borderline gypsy-with-crystal-ball-in-basement-of-the-Alamo crazy.
  21. I think the Brewers have to be thinking about LaPorta waiting in the wings. What happens then? Does Corey go to center? I would rather Gwynn be a role player and receive less at bats than LaPorta, but it does hurt our defense. I think Hart is definitely the CF of the future, unless Braun miraculously becomes a graceful outfielder (which is possible, albeit unlikely). Any downgrade in defense is more than acceptable considering that LaPorta is just incredibly better offensively than Gwynn. The gap there is much larger. Fwiw, I know there have been some observers of LaPorta's minor-league play that have chimed in on BF.net that he's looked fine if not comfortable in LF. Perhaps someone could weigh in that's gotten some chances to see Matt in Hunstville this season?
  22. The fact that Girardi is even DH-ing Posada at this point seems irresponsible and risky to me. I mean, if the guy describes his throwing shoulder as "dead", should he be using it in his swinging motion? Besides, since Jorge is a switch-hitter, that right shoulder gets the stress in both roles -- as both front & rear shoulder. That said, if your option past the hot-right-now-Molina is Chad Moeller, I could see why you want Posada to still be able to contribute with the bat. But then you have 4 capable OFers, and are either playing Damon in CF (not a strong option at this point in his career), or sitting Matsui/Abreu... both of whom are lefties, as is Damon. Basically, the Posada injury has made a mess of things, and exposed a huge weakness at C that I'd be willing to guess the Yankees will have to address this season.
  23. I agree with the general sentiment here. "Small Ball" has become a nice way of talking about giving away outs, imo. You only start the game with 27, so why any manager would want to intentionally decrease that number is beyond me... save extreme/specific circumstances. What's funny is that even in something like bunting with a runner on 2B w/no outs, which might appear the best use of a sac bunt, is almost useless, as Rluz mentioned. If the thinking is, 'A WP/PB scores the run', then there's an assumption that a pitcher is wild, otherwise you're playing a thousandth of a percentile, likely. If the P were wild, why not just let your batter BB his way aboard? I think the concept of bunting a guy closer makes a lot of intuitive sense, especially when you factor in attempts to stay out of the double-play. However, as noted, the reality once again tends to outweigh the perception. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. Less of awkward weird nerdy looking guys on the broadcast the better. As an akward, weird, nerdy-looking guy, I could not agree more. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif From what I've heard about her work, she's been better than expected/hoped. When I can add Extra Innings or MLB.TV, I'll look forward to a 'sideline' reporter that is actually aware of baseball!
