  1. I agree that Yost seems (I haven't checked into this) to start many backups in the same games, but I disagree with your "AAA" comment. why does the Crew keep spitting up in the sweep game? Because it's really hard to sweep a MLB team. I think we take that for granted, and assume that other teams must be doing it more.
  2. Since it was just on TNT this evening, I had to dig this thread back up. Every time I watch Return of the King the whole way through, the scene where Sam, Merry, & Pippin discover that Frodo, too, is going to the undying lands makes me cry like a baby. I guess in a way it reminds me of the friends from whom I've grown apart over the years...
  3. Crean followed after the uninspiring Mike Deane, who left the program in not-so-good condition. MU alumni and fans were pretty much willing to give anyone a chance since in their minds, the program had hit rock bottom. I know -- I'm asking if his name was mentioned as a possible candidate. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  4. Trust me, you guys are going to love Mike Cameron. Take Gwynn, make him even a little better defensively, and add power tons more power - don't worry about the batting average, the man can get on base, and he's all brains once he gets there. Oh, I can't wait. I know I might sound like a broken record, but I think his game is going to not only play well at MP, but also fit perfectly into the lineup. Also, am I the only one that thinks the 2008 squad is going to surpass 2007's HR total with relative ease?
  5. One more thought: by some of the logic in this thread, the Tigers should be relieved to be facing the lowly Red Sox, right?
  6. Happy Panty Fun Party Do not taunt Happy Panty Fun Party... Crazy long signatures and quoting aside, there are some witty posters there. Ugh - you said it, Stevo. I do agree with your general point, too. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. Many people last year probably were not scared of the Rockies and they should have been. It took a really fluky hot streak and a blown call in the one-game playoff for the Rox to make the playoffs. I understand and agree with your general point, but I disagree with the example.
  8. If Leyland were 'safe', I don't know why he'd axe Lloyd McClendon or Chuck Herandez. They've been with Leyland since he took over in 2005. Are you suggesting the team's success in 2006 was totally independent of them and its struggles in '08 are going to be alleviated by firing them?
  9. Plus there are always assistants at other programs that are more than qualified for head jobs of their own. To me, it's always hard to identify which would and which wouldn't be candidates. Was Crean a name tossed around as a likelihood when he was hired off Izzo's bench? I don't remember.
  10. Frame it this way: If the Brewers had somehow lost the first 6, would we all be in a panick that the team sucked? Oh wait, many probably would. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif The Tigers have a lot of talent. If this 6-game losing streak came in July, no one would even be taking notice other than to say, "Oh."
  11. FtJ, are you still feeling comfortable with your comparison of Kendall to Counsell?
  12. Or the Brewers were to eat $2 mil. of his salary -- totally plausible.
  13. Well if your target is low & away quite frequently, that'd play a role, wouldn't it?
  14. Posts like "life or death" Fwiw, I read that one as sarcastic. I hope I was right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. Anderson came from the GOLF CHANNEL and as a sideline reporter for the Spurs. A few years ago he did some minor league baseball and Little League baseball. I find it hard to believe that's the best we could do. I don't get it. Did BA spit in your coffee? I think he's fantastic. Not perfect, but no p-b-p guy is. "A few years ago" he did some baseball? This is from the brewers.com article upon his hire. You should probably not just say random crap about people. "According to his bio on The Golf Channel's Web site, Anderson began his broadcasting career calling baseball games for the Minor League San Diego Missions, then moved on to play-by-play jobs for the NFL, NBA and NCAA and reporting stints with FOX and FOX Sports Net." Oh, and here's the quip from his Golf Channel bio the article referenced: "Anderson's background includes NFL, NBA and NCAA basketball play-by-play and reporting for Fox Sports and Fox Sports Net and play-by-play for ESPN and CSTV baseball telecasts. He began his career broadcasting minor league baseball for the San Antonio Missions and during that time worked in the golf industry pursuing credentials to become a club professional."
  16. Well, it is his top hand (he bats RH), so that could be plausible. But I don't think the umps would be too keen on him not cleaning off the pine tar.
  17. Should we pencil in Wednesday as a loss with Bush pitching against the Reds unless the Brewers give him 7 runs of support? Although that is entirely possible with Josh Fogg going for the Reds. It'd be nice if this discussion could be constructive, instead of stuff like this.
  18. poor announcers in general Untrue. Completely untrue. The Brewers have arguably the best duo in the league imo.
  19. as long as you have speed, base stealing is something you can become good at. His CS numbers from previous seasons don't mean much imo. Minors: 84/141 = 59.6% Majors: 43/72 = 59.7% Bill is in his age 28 season. He's not going to magically discover how to not stink at basestealing. Bill does a lot of things well, but stealing bases is not one of them. Speed has so much less to do with stealing than timing & picking the right situation in which to run. Speed obviously makes basestealing easier, but that's the part you can't learn. Having speed doesn't mean you can learn the jumps/timing/instincts.
  20. I watched the whole game & didn't catch this. That's really interesting, sadly.
  21. Unfortunately, then we'd be one injury away from wishing we had Turnbow back, not to mention missing him in 2009.
  22. His dozens of innings in Milwaukee weren't pretty, but his hundreds of minor-league innings show that using 60-ish MLB IP as a talent indicator is not a good way to analyze.
  23. I guess the problem I see is that you can't use how a guy "starts out" to determine what he's going to produce -- these are just games like Aug.18th-Sept. 12th are just games, too. I like much better to rely on past performances, since you obviously have a larger sample. Seeing as how Prince is a young player who's growing, at the least we shouldn't expect him to regress much. Then again, "regress" is all so subjective. Some fans would see a season where Prince "only" hit 38 HR as a step back, even if he drew over 100 BBs & surpassed 40 2Bs. What I try to do is gauge a range of 'expectability' (sorry, don't know how to say it). Prince has high 30 to low 60 HR potential imo, so I can't really be too upset if he hits 37, or too excited if he were to hit 58 (well, that would be pretty exciting... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ). I'm no expert, but I've found that not trying to define 'success' or 'failure' too strictly has helped me understand the fluctuations of baseball much, much better.
  24. I guess it all depends on what one means by "power." He's very unlikely to surpass 50 HR again, just because it's incredibly hard to do, but Prince is a lock for 35+ HR per year just almost by accident. However, when I'm considering power, I don't want to sell short the value of 2Bs & SLG in general. Better SLG tends to lead to more OBP, which is obviously a great thing. I personally expect Prince to hit around 45 HR this season, but I'm guessing he'll have his first 40 2B/40 HR season, too. Imo his BA & OBP will go up, and his SLG will be down ever so slightly.
  25. Funny how future results can be confusing when you use one-game samples to form the basis of an argument. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I want the Brewers to win, but I don't want to cheer for a guy who broke the law, cheated the game, and really whose whole career could be a myth. I hate to say it, but you're pigeon-holing youself to cheering for about 5-10% of all MLBers. Oh, but the Mitchell Report named names, so the other guys are in the clear (pun intended)
