  1. Every game (especially in 2007's particular situation) should be played with the expectation that your competition has already won. Having the actual score visible really shouldn't have any bearing on players' effort or execution - though I see the counterpoint. I echo the notion that if professional ballplayers can't stay on top of their game with that kind of pressure, then they won't be at the MLB level very long. The only way I could see this affecting players' effort would be to see the score of an out-of-town game that mathematically eliminated the Brewers from postseason action, at which point it really wouldn't matter anyway.
  2. yea, sorry. That one got a little heavy. Guess the biggest reason to admit I have a problem is that I still love the pics! http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/embarassed.gif
  3. http://www.sofacinema.co.uk/guardian/images/products/8/9398-large.jpg http://www.amazingben.com/anifrolicking.jpg http://www.cabbagestew.com/images/sandpeople-dead.jpg I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. I HATE THEM! http://thecia.com.au/reviews/s/images/star-wars-2-5.jpg http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/020516/175456__starbop_l.jpg As you can see, my Jedi powers are far beyond yours. Now, back down. I don't think so.
  4. So, where're you headin'? Aspen. Mmmm, California! Beautiful!
  5. I hope you get those tickets! http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif
  6. Plus it gives Melvin an added shield in case 2008 or 2009 gets off to a poor start. Yost's contract runs through next year, with a club option for '09, while Melvin's runs all the way through 2009. I by am no means an insider, but I'd imagine that if Melvin brings in another guy for next year and the team falls apart again, it'd be Melvin's neck on the line, too. Sticking with Yost allows him to tout any success likely to come from young players' growth as a credit to his manager. Then, if 2008 is a disappointment, once it's time to decide on the 2009 team option, he can start tossing out the "moving in another direction" talk (not coincidentally in his final year under contract). I hope this theory is wrong, just as Yost is the wrong man for the manager job. I don't know if I can handle another season full of flow-of-the-game blunders!
  7. Brewer fans would've done the same thing, had roles been reversed -- but it still tasted like burning. It must be a little comical from an outsider's perspective (especially a rival) to see the team's inability to hang on to leads, which is why we are where we sit today. Again, that said, I wanted to pull out every single visible tooth of Murton's & Soriano's today. It's really shocking to me that I haven't let out a huge "AAARRGHHHH!" of frustration yet. Perhaps the phrase "ticking time-bomb" applies here.
  8. Ned Yost is smart because he's the manager. Questioning any decision he makes means you're unintelligent.
  9. Thanks for the input, adambr & endaround. Like I said, I'm no expert, but just tried to ballpark some numbers. I'm glad to see my total estimate was not too far off, and (as I'd hoped), any error(s) was(were) on the side of over-estimation - so the reality is that the Crew will likely have more money with which to play than I'd forecasted. Makes me feel even better about our situation heading into 2008! I know Sheets's contract will be an issue, but it's nice to know there's some $$ in the coffers (esp. after record-setting attendance)
  10. Correct. Simply getting the call to do a 'bigger' game means nothing to BA's potential departure, but it certainly isn't an indication that there's no interest in him beyond Milwaukee. EDIT: Poor, BA, though - he's gotta work with Tim McCarver...

  12. for how much myself and every brewer fan on this site wants the brewers to win, I can guarantee you that our manager wants it 1000 times worse than we do. I can guarantee you that it is literally not possible to want the Brewers to win any more than the collective of this site already does, let alone 1000x.
  13. sbryl, I agree that pinstripes would do wonders for those gad-awful uni's. The cool thing is that they could go with their navy or even use black for the stripes - which would open up some cool alternate jersey color combos. Pinstripes would definitely bail them out, but to be fair, the conceptual sketch for the current Brewers unis doesn't look that great, either - and I love our current look.
  14. I'm not very well-versed in exactly how the arbitration process works, but excluding arbitration-eligible players, in 2008 the Crew has only $35.988 mil. committed in salaries. The excluded players are: Estrada, Hardy, Mench, Vargas, Capuano, Wise, Spurling, Shouse, Bush, & Aquino (*barf* http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/sick.gif). If you randomly assign $5 mil to Bush & Estrada & Mench, $4.5 to Capuano & Vargas, $2 to Shouse, $1.5 to Wise, $1 to Spurling, and $3 to Hardy (no idea if he'd get more or less) - that equals $67.488 mil. in total committed. Plenty of room to sign an impactful FA, and who knows where that money would/will be best spent. It's not like we can't improve, too. (I understand I have no authority on the topic, but if anything I tried to err on the side of larger arbitration increases than will occur.)
  15. what's kind of tricky is that the players are involved. Whether anyone thinks it's stupid or not, saves are - quite literally - very valuable to relievers. Even though the stat can be overblown, it's one that's used to measure them against other RP peers, and affects any potential payday (for closers). I'm sure it comes into play in arbitration, and also in the general negotiation process, so it's not like there's just some unwritten rule dictating the choice. Though the 10th inning in Houston is likely to be a situation where Cordero wouldn't care, he probably relishes any chance to pitch in the 9th with a 3-run lead - since it's the easiest way to rack up saves, and help himself to a bigger payday.
  16. BTW, I see what you are saying about majority of managers doing it, and I still disagree with that assessment. To me, that's like saying that because 27 of 30 people tell me that the earth is flat, I can't criticize the one who is telling me it, because other people will say the same thing. well-said - though to be fair to logan, his consistent point is that we can't necessarily assume that a new manager wouldn't make similar mistakes, especially given the prevalence of "conventional wisdom" throughout MLB managers
  17. sorry, logan - I missed your post entirely. I was responding to bthurley, and I should've quoted him.
  18. Advantage Brewers. Sort of, except that we face a pretty impressive list of SPs in the next week and a half.
  19. The scary thing for me is,hearing his rational after some of these boneheaded moves. It makes me believe he's not learning at all from his mistakes and i don't trust he won't do the same logic defying things again next year if the Brewers are again in another tight playoff race. The fact he still doesn't see in retrospect the common sense of why using Cordero in the 10th yesterday was the right thing to do,makes me think he's simply to set in some of his Yost manager handbook ways and he can't allow himself to question if they make sense in the first place. Precisely. He isn't even willing to admit that (or understand how) some of his worst moves are mistakes. He counters with an argumentative tone right off the bat (a tell-tale sign of someone knowing they messed up), and just sticks to his 'handbook' - I really like that way of phrasing it.
  20. Did something else lead up to the "Game over" post being a final straw? Banned for just that?
  21. Not sure if this helps, logan, but it's the best I could find. Wins-Added Manager Measurement and Evaluation Rating System (WAMMERS), by Bradford Doolittle (KC Star) Fwiw, his ratings put Yost 80th out of the 100 he studied (MLB mgrs. from 1988-2004) - but I'm sorry in that it doesn't really highlight strategies, merely analyzes impact.
  22. Man, that model guy sure gets all the work. I bet it's cause he's white! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/Nl_2005_milwaukee_01.gif
  23. what we can talk about, though, is the concept of "Hatas" in the rap world. Even though I don't like 50 Cent because I think he's not a good rapper, I'm sure he'd tell me it's just because I was hatin' on all his fine women and money - and my critique is therefore not based on facts (like him sucking at rapping), but just jealousy and emotion(s). I think it's similar to what BBTStein was getting at
  24. To answer this thread's title, nothing.
  25. The Seattle Kansas City Royaners of Tampa. Seriously - that star thing? Right from the Mariners' logo. This reminds me of the Brewers' (early mid-90's) uni change - an attempt to overcompensate (at least monetarily) for the crappy product on the field
