  1. I think that they might have developed a new test for HGH or something. Has Pujols homered in the past month? He sure looked like a horse's behind watching that double against the Brewers.
  2. If they are planning on palying Counsell more they might want insurance in case of injury since they have no depth. Wouldn't be surprised to see him DFA'd in time for a DH. My god I don't want to see Kotsay DH. I guess that he's the Rob Picciolo to Counsell's Ed Romero, then.
  3. I'm still trying to figure out the point of this Josh Wilson character. Outside of hitting right handed, what does he do that Counsell doesn't?
  4. I think he's back with the Rays.
  5. I'm going with 2. I think that the fact this team is 4 games over 500 is a huge accomplishment when you factor in the long skid a few weeks ago.
  6. And your point is? He was just guessing my trivia question on the second post.
  7. I think that the best way to do it is bait the rim of the pail somehow. Peanut butter topped with a few seeds should do it. Make the 'plank' very narrow, like a ruler or paint stirrer. I know that it was very effective, cause gramps was burying gophers/chipmunks all the time.
  8. I think Reyes will probably get twice that. I'd rather go after Furcal on a short term, 'make-good' type deal- he's had an injury-riddled season thus far, and might be available fairly cheap starting in a month or two.
  9. I'd do the Chris Paul deal, but only with the assurance that he doesn't opt out of his deal after one season (not going to happen). I'd also do the Augustin/2 draft choices/exemption trade with Charlotte. I'd pass on the other eight.
  10. They like to chew, that's for sure. If they stay under the garage you'll be OK, but if you have a wood door or foundation, they may decide to gnaw their way in. Not sure if they are as bad as squirrels when it comes to nesting in engine blocks, but that's something to think about come fall/winter.
  11. Outside of Ichiro and maybe Livian Hernandez most of these big money international 'bonus babies' have not had long term success. Heck, even Yuni was a hot item a few years back. I'd never get into a bidding war on one of these guys. You'd be better served to take these millions and boost your scouting academies in the DR and elsewhere in Latin America.
  12. Dave Nilsson? Good guess. Just checked, and Nilly was the last to hit 20 (and technically only as far as I know of- Simba hit 19 as a catcher and 4 as a DH in '82). In his last season in the bigs, he had a heck of a season. I've always wondered if he regretted walking away from the game for the Olympics- or if he intended the Olympic hiatus to be permanent, for that matter. He easily left eight figures on the table.
  13. He hit 10 as a Brewer. The last catcher to hit more than ten as a Brewer is pretty obscure.Eddie Perez hit 11 in 2003.Got it, nice work.
  14. It's likely a gopher. The following may offend 'animal people', so you may want to stop reading if you are one....... My grandpa's solution for pesky gophers was to fill a five gallon pail about half full with water, place a narrow wooden plank down to the bottom of the pail then cover the surface of the water with sunflower seeds. The gopher will go for the seeds and then drown in the water. Somewhat cruel, but apparently was very effective, and doesn't involve poison or anything that could harm kids, pets, etc.
  15. He hit 10 as a Brewer. The last catcher to hit more than ten as a Brewer is pretty obscure.
  16. I'd leave things as is. I worry a little about his acumen behind the dish (mostly throwing, but blocking pitches as well), but he's hitting the heck out of the ball which makes up for it. Great chance he's the first Brewer catcher with more than 10 dingers since... any guesses?
  17. Great article. Here's another good one about his baseball career, which I've never seen covered in much detail. http://sportsillustrated..../23/macho.man/index.html What a tremendous loss. It seems like no one in the wrestling business outside of McMahon has animosity toward the Macho Man whatsoever. Even the Honky Tonk Man said good things about him. Sounds like he was great interacting with his fans as well. I know that most people are canonized after their death, but this outpouring all seems genuine. Obviously, the man had his demons, but he seemed like a pretty good guy all in all.
  18. Probably the worst trade ever but, the Bucks send Gooden, first round pick this year and the Bucks first round pick next year for Beasley and Minnesota's first round pick this year. Then the Bucks trade Jennings and Maggette to the Lakers for Bynum and their 2012 first round pick. Bynum would slide over to the PF spot. The Bucks could then take either Brandon Knight or Kemba Walker with the #2 pick in this draft. Like I said probably the worst trade ever but the only teams I can see that would have some interest in Jennings would be the Lakers, Clippers, or the Mavericks. I wonder if the Bucks would get real explosive and just trade both Bogut and Jennings. There's a chance that Kemba will be there at 10. He reminds me too much of Shawn Respert, so I'd stay away. Frankly, I'm not enamored with any of the 'top guys' in this draft. I wish that the Bucks could trade down for a low first round pick and maybe a first next year. One guy that I really like that I think would fit in Skiles' system nicely is Malcolm Lee from UCLA. He has injury issues, so he will likely drop down to the 20's , if not out of the first round. I'm not biased toward the Pac 10 or anything, but I also like Isaiah Thomas from Washington if the Bucks were to trade Jennings. He's smallish for the NBA, but he has demonstrated that he can shoot and finish at the basket (at least at the college level). I like Johnson from Purdue too, but all of these guys are borderline first rounders, and would be a huge reach at 10. I just hope that they don't take the kid from Texas based on his 'wingspan', athleticism and upside. Draft someone based on their ability instead of their potential (Haislip, Alexander, Sanders) for a change.
  19. Exactly, things were so much simpler back then. I remember begging my parents to take me to baseball day or bat day or rain parka day or whatever. I'm still upset that I was a 'tweener' and didn't get one of those Pabst/Brewers fishing hats. Someday, I'll get one on the internet. I did score a 'Medalist' jersey though back in '83. What a madhouse that was. Friday night I believe, Gorman's first game back in County Stadium after the trade and Sutton got his 3,000 K. I remember the place being completely packed and they ran out of jerseys, people were getting pretty upset too, kind of foreshadowing how things are these days. The 'Autograph Fridays ' became a stampede too, I think I remember reading that they've limited that to kids this year. If so, that's a good thing. I don't think that this craziness is solely driven by greed, I think that sports in general have gotten a lot bigger with the masses. I remember going with my parents to Shopko in Janesville way back in the day when it opened- probably circa '79 or '80. Paul Molitor was back in the 'sports section' signing free autographs (sporting a stasche too, wish I could find the picture my mom took), if my recollection is correct, there was no line and few if any people milling around.. Can you imagine if this happened today? There'd be a line out the door.
  20. No problem with you or other collectors whatsoever. Who am I to say anything? I'm a grown man who collects sports cards- pieces of paper with pictures of men on them. Not much 'new stuff' though, because that industry has been mostly ruined by greed as well. I do have a problem when some two fisted slopper drags the entire family out in the Econoline armed with cheap tickets to get a dozen or so of the bobble heads to resell on eBay for profit. That often means that some 6 year old doesn't get one, and that ticks me off. Heck, I took the kids to baseball card day a few years ago, and they got shut out.
  21. Yes. I doubt that endeared him to the powers that be here.
  22. Sorry if I offend anyone, and yes I know that I'm an old curmudgeon- but I just don't 'get' things like this. I bet some of these people were camping out all night waiting for this, which I find extremely stupid. Without knowing, I made the mistake once of going to a bobble head game. I couldn't figure out why lines were forming so early at all the entrances. What a joke, grown adults with backpacks going through getting their toy and then back out in line. Kids in tow being used as runners, all for a cheap piece of ceramic with some paint and a spring. I respect people that collect these things for fun, but you just know that a lot of these people were there to sell these on eBay. I felt like telling these folks to get a life, if they'd put forth that determination and effort into a job, they'd go far. I guess that it's human nature to want something where money can be made or for 'free'. Like the fools who line up for a half a mile for some radio station promoted '97 cents a gallon' gasoline, or wait three hours for a crappy free Denny's breakfast. Don't even get me started on 'Black Friday'.
  23. This. I'm pretty sure Doug values his job over his pride. At least I hope he does. I don't think the Cruz issue will make or break Melvin's job either way. He's probably better than Counsell at this point, but his fate was sealed when Counsell was brought back. I'd have no problem in Cruz returning to the organization, but I wouldn't give up anything of value for him. I said too bad for him above, because everyone knew it was a foolish decision on his part at the time he made it. It would have been tough for him to swallow his pride and go back to Nashville again, but Texas didn't exact present him with a clear path to the bigs.
