  1. Let me preface this by saying that I feel that Sizemore is one of the most overrated players in recent memory. That being said, I think the comparisons between him and Ryan Braun are a little hyperbolic. I'm not really interested in him anyway since microfracture type injuries are pretty nasty.
  2. I'm willing to give Betancourt a shot in leiu of panicking and overpaying mediocrity such as Renteria- just because he's the best of a small and sorry bunch of available shortstops with MLB experience. As I've said in other posts, I want to see Betancourt with my own eyes in spring training, while giving Cruz his shot at the same time. You never know- if both of those guys are awful in the spring, a quality guy may be available then in trade (or a passable guy may be out there on the waiver wire) that isn't available right now- lots can happen between now and then. I'm not sure about WAR and all the advanced statistics, but it would be hard to convince me that any warm body could be any worse than Escobar was last season. Aside from the awful offense and subpar defense, is there a bWAR for 'Boneheaded Mental Mistakes/Baserunning Errors'? Escobar had to be far below 'replacement' in that category.
  3. Unless Prince is a mercenary solely out for the money and looking for the highest offer, I see no reason for him to go to Baltimore unless they significantly trump all other offers. I don't see Baltimore as a tempting destination with allure to free agents.
  4. So much for the theory of trading Fielder and using Lee as a cheap stopgap.
  5. I agree that the Brewers have had the best off-season of any team in baseball. As for all the 'experts' talk about the Brewers 'gutting' the farm system, that's not a major issue to me for two reasons. First, the goal is to win games in the National League, not the PCL or the Midwest League- I would rather stockpile Brewer wins than stockpile prospects. Secondly, in my view, the Brewers have been 'gutting their system' over the past 6-7 years by bringing guys to the bigs. Lots of these guys have turned into contributors at the big league level.... isn't that the goal? These things are cyclical, you would expect teams that have had multiple losing systems or low payrolls to have better minor league systems, due to high draft picks, picks awarded from free agent defections, etc. Even high payroll teams may have a lot of talent in the minors because there are guys in the high minors blocked by the big money guys at the major league level. Really the only guys that the Brewers moved that can be defined as prospects were Lawrie, Odorizzi and Jeffress. If these guys were moved for rental players, I may be more worried, but both Marcum and Greinke will be here for two seasons at the least. I would guess that out of the three prospects moved, Lawrie and Jeffress would both be at the major league level by the end of those two years anyway.
  6. Without looking at stats. I remember Capuano going on a long losing streak, but frankly, I blame the 2007 meltdown more on a couple of incredulous loses in Texas (Saturday night, Cordero blowing a big lead) and Philly (Sunday afternoon, Braun kicking a ball with another big lead blown). The gas can also known as Scott Linebrink should shoulder a lot of blame as well. Obviously, if Cordero doesn't give up the blast to Ramirez, that team wins the divison if Sheets doesn't get hurt.
  7. Best of luck to a fierce competitor on the field, and a hard-working, articulate class-act off it.... one of only a handful of players from each generation that leave a legacy of almost unanimous popularity among Brewer fans. We will follow you in the boxscores, and welcome you back at any capacity in the future. Almost forgot- best pickoff move in team history! Here's hoping that you continue the momentum that you built last season, and go on to a long successful (and injury-free) career.
  8. Only if he promises to wear the headband with 'TITO' written on it. That was one of my favorite baseball cards way back in the day. We have to keep in mind that he's probably around 70 now, so his range at SS won't be very good. That said, he should be able to put up a better OBP than Escobar did last year.
  9. I can't imagine that he would fit in the budget at this point, not to mention that Braddock will likely outperform him at a fraction of the cost.
  10. I agree on the injuries, but if Hardy can stay healthy and continue to play solid defense- even if he hits as he has the past 2 years, he's an above average MLB shortstop who will not have any problems finding a job. Look at the list of available shortstops....no wonder Hardy was resistant to move to third.
  11. As it dragged on longer and longer, this seemed inevitable. My guess is that the Brewers probably offered him a low base-incentive laden deal, and he balked, because if they are penciling in Narveson as the 5, it would be tough to earn those incentives. Based on how Capuano pitched late last season, he would have been a solid #5, so it's too bad something couldn't be worked out for depth if nothing else. He must have a couple offers on the table better than the Brewers. I'm not sold on Narveson, but he's OK as a #5. As others have said, the real problem comes with the inevitable injury(ies) and you have to go to the #6, 7 or even #8 guy. I, for one, never want to see Manny Parra ever start another game as a Brewer, so I hope he's not in that equation (though I fear that he will be if someone else isn't brought in).
  12. If I'm Hardy, I would never come back to Milwaukee by choice after how things went down in August of 2009.
  13. Sounds to me like the type of things that we were hearing about Teddy Higuera 18 or 19 years ago. He may start throwing fairly well in workouts again, and then there will most likely be another setback. The list of pitchers that have came back effectively from major shoulder issues is very, very short
  14. Hopefully this is true because I love the move despite the age.....heck, he's three years younger than Hoffman. Saito has solid stuff, and Hawkins doesn't exactly have a long track record of pitching well in high leverage situations. Saito would be a great backup plan if something happened with Axford.
  15. I was hoping that someone in the division would toss some cash at him because I think he's done. He's been hitting 84 mph on his fastball in workouts and guys with major shoulder issues tend to have unsuccessful comebacks.
  16. And I quote from my response, 'As for Dickerson (and the small sample, coming off injuries, etc. excuses'. Though I think it's preposterous to dismiss guys like Edmonds because Dickerson is on the roster, I'm done arguing whether or not Dickerson is a good or even decent player. I spent most of the winter after Mench was acquired engaged in the same type arguments (he only had x at bats, it was a small sample, new leagueetc). As far as I am concerned, Dickerson is not a valid option for CF. In my view he is 25th man/AAAA material (the third Mouton). At any rate, time will tell. Maybe I am wrong, and if so, at that time I will eat crow.
  17. As far as I know, Edmonds played through some injuries last year. But he played well without missing significant time so I don't think that he's just a 'phrase'. As for him being older, he's the same age as Counsell- and he hit much better last year. As for Dickerson (and the small sample, coming off injuries, etc. excuses), I would be willing to bet that there were games in which Edmonds had more extra base hits than Dickerson's paltry 2 in 60 plate appearances, how's that for a small sample?
  18. Lots of non-contenders are just looking to dump some salary come July, especially when the players are going to be free agents. Lots of times you don't have to give up top prospects to get these guys, the Ray Durham deal being an example.
  19. At a risk of getting too political, I hope this guy rots. The guy who killed Malik Sealy from the Timberwolves about 10 years or so ago had a lenient sentence and then promptly picked up another DWI shortly upon release.
  20. I'm sure that I'm in the minority here, but I think LePay is downright brutal and Lucas makes for an intolerable pair. I do like Ted Davis though. The Bucks have had some good radio guys, Howard David was another one. I don't listen to Packers games too much on the radio, but Larrivee is a good announcer. He's done every major sport, and does both the college and pro games.
  21. I'd take Greinke over Lee any day of the week. He's younger, cheaper and has better stuff. Lee was awesome in 2008, but outside of his remarkably low walk rate, nothing from the past 2 years screams 'Give this guy $120 million'- especially since he will be 37 in that 5th year. In the end, I say that if you have a chance to get an elite arm, you have to do it- even if it means raiding your prospect base somewhat.
  22. Hopefully, Cruz continues his winter ball tear and goes all '92 Listach on us next year. Listach had a .668 OPS in AA and AAA in '91. He was quite a bit younger at that point than Cruz though.
  23. Should McGehee be benched for Gamel? In my opinion, no. Should Gamel start the season in the minors? I'd say no to that too, because he's proven enough at that level- the only problem being that if Cruz makes the team and Betancourt does as well, how many infielders can you carry? Ideally, I'd like to see Gamel brought along slowly, playing a few games a week against right handed pitching at third and perhaps right field if he is going to get some work there. He'd be a nice bat off the bench as well, because the guy looks like a pure hitter to me. At any rate, I think that he needs to get a fair shake at the major league level before he is given up on. I'm a little worried that his handling by Macha ruined him somewhat mentally. Hopefully that's not the case. As for McGehee, you would think that he would have decent trade value due to how cheap he is, how well he's played the past two seasons, and the fact that generally there is a dearth of solid third basemen out there. That said, it seems almost like there is a surplus of third basemen these days, and at any rate what do you trade McGehee for? I don't see a need for pitching anymore, and it doesn't make sense to me to trade him just to fill holes at SS and CF that only appear on paper at this point. Chances are that someone in the infield will get hurt at some point, so it is a nice luxury to have both of these guys around.
  24. To me, both shortstop and center field are defensive positions. I'm confident that Gomez can man center adequately and though I haven't seen him much- from what I've read, Cruz seems to be average to slightly above defensively. Those would be my 'leans' right now. Escobar was downright brutal last season in basically all aspects of the game, I don't think that it's a stretch that Cruz can outperform that performance by a bit.
  25. I don't think that panic is warranted in this situation, mostly because the cupboard of shortstops is bare. I think you wait until March and see how Betancourt and Cruz look, despite the advanced metrics or whatever, I'm willing to give these two a shot. If you are weeks into camp and shortstop appears to be a black hole you may get lucky with someone getting released after being caught up in a numbers game or surpassed by the hot prosect. This is a fairly extreme example of this, but back in Spring '92, the Brewers had black holes at both SS and 3B after Sheffield was dumped and Spiers got hurt. Next thing you know, Kevin Seitzer is released by the Royals and Pat Listach is playing out of his mind. Despite having a terrible infield situation on paper in mid March, the Crew won 92 that year.
