  1. I got Dan Thomas on a ball when I was a kid. Still have it somewhere. I think Yount is on it too.
  2. Sharp post. Sanchez just isn't good. I watched him pitch several times last year and wasn't impressed. His ERA was higher than Suppan's last year. It's not like he is super young either, he is 26. No way would I trade Hardy for him. Agreed. For some reason, a lot on this forum want to give our core away for mediocrity. I guarantee you guys like Sanchez, DeJesus, and Blaylock are roasted on their respective team's message boards. By the way, Brian Roberts is good, but he's not as good as people here seem to think- you'd think he was Joe Morgan in his prime or something. Dude had like 10 homers and 60 RBI last year.
  3. I'd have no problem putting Parra in the deal for Peavy. I really don't think his ceiling is above a number 3 starter, plus his injury history worries me. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable going into the season with him as the number 2 starter.
  4. From everything I've read about Macha, I'm not sure why anyone would want him. He seems like Ned Yost without any social skills. Much like Yost, he was criticized as being stubborn.....leaving pitchers in too long, and running the same guys out there day after day no matter what. I had to chuckle when I found an old blog post criticizing him for letting Jason Kendall play every day without ever using his backup (Adam Melhuse). I don't want this guy one bit.
  5. Why should Castro be safe? True, the bullpen coach is pretty meaningless, but maybe a new staff all the way up and down would be best. It's not like the bullpen has been world beaters recently.
  6. If the players didn't like Yost, my guess is that they would absolutely revolt with hard "butts" like Macha, Bowa or Showalter. Those guys have already gotten at least one chance, and all been judged as failures to the point of getting fired. As I've said on other posts, I think the only "retread" that I would like would be Tom Kelly. He'd be perfect for this team, but the odds of bringing him in are probably zero. Somebody needs to remind him that there is a dog track in Kenosha. All told, I think Sveum is the choice here. He knows the game, the players seem to respect him, and if need be, he can be let go without too much trouble. ,
  7. Last year, he hit about 25 points above his career average. Plus he had only 44 extra base hits, Hart had 81. No way is DeJesus an upgrade over Hart. Going further, he's not the most patient hitter either. Over his career, he's only walked once per 11 or so plate appearances. That rate is not much better than Hart's. I'm starting to worry that Hart's terrible second half is jading people's perceptions of him. I guarantee that Kansas City would do a DeJesus /Hart trade in a second.
  8. Why does everyone here want David DeJesus? He seems pretty underwhelming to me. He's almost 30 years old and hasn't really accomplished anything in the bigs. No way would I trade Hart for him. Yes Hart stunk the second half..... but over his career, he's been better than DeJesus in every aspect of the game. Plus he's three years younger. DeJesus seems to have replaced Coco Crisp as the overrated CF that people here want.
  9. How about Parra, Escobar (or Weeks) and Gwynn for Peavy? I want no part of Greene though.
  10. I'd stick with Sveum, even though I'm still sore about him starting Suppan. I'm assuming that he will come cheap, so if he falls on his face, a move can be made in short order. Better than giving more money to dolts like Ken Macha or Mike Hargrove.
  11. Weeks is what he is. For his salary and considering he plays second base, I'll take a chance for at least one year that he might at least partially break out. It would be terribly frustrating to see him go somewhere else and flourish. Now if he could only stop making errors at the worst possible times....
  12. I'm not sure trading Hardy would be a good move - especially for a mediocre starter. At this point, I'm not convinced that Escobar is ready to hit major league pitching. For all we know, he could be the next Royce Clayton (good field, no hit). You never know, maybe Escobar could be the centerpiece in a deal for a pitcher. At this point, I'd be more interested in trading the unknown quantity over the proven one.
  13. I see Burnett and Lowe's names being thrown around a lot here. Those guys are both going to command about $15 million per. If the Brewers sign any starting pitchers not named Sabathia to an 8 figure/year deal, I will go absolutely ballistic.
  14. This is a great point, and it's something I've thought of as well. If somehow the team could dump Suppan, paying half of his salary, they could give C.C $25 million or so and would still have "only" somewhere around $35 million invested in their starting staff. This would only be about 40% of the payroll for the starting staff which actually seems pretty reasonable to me. I gotta think that is pretty close to what they paid this year with Suppan and Sheets at around $10 million each and about 5-6 million for half a year of C.C. I guess the key is dumping Suppan on somebody without having to take a bad contract back. Even if they pay half his salary, it's going to be tough to find a taker.
  15. Sometimes freezing the drive fixes it for long enough to pull all the data off. If you try it, wrap it in paper towel and then seal it in a freezer bag to prevent condensation from totally trashing the drive. It's probably a one in ten shot, but sometimes it does work.
  16. Anti 1982 sentiment aside, Molitor was always regarded as one of the most cerebral players of his era. He was always listed on the "will make a good manager someday" lists. While I'd love to see him join the team, I just don't see it happening. How many times has he shot the Brewers down since 1992? If he hasn't come back by now, I doubt if he ever will.
  17. Personally, I couldn't care less if the Brewers organization is a fun place to work. The "mom and pop" type operation run by the Seligs just wasn't getting the job done on the field. Obviously Attanasio sees the link between winning and making money (you have to spend money to make money), I'm not sure the Seligs ever grasped that concept. With winning comes bandwagon fans, with bandwagon fans, comes higher attendance/higher tv ratings, higher attendance/tv ratings brings more revenue, etc., etc., etc. Honestly, I have no problem giving Sabathia $25 million (assuming the bidding doesn't get too crazy). If you let Sabathia and Sheets go, you are going to have to sign somebody to replace them with. Do you go after a guy like Burnett (who's half the pitcher and ten times the injury risk)? Burnett's probably going to get something approaching $15 million a year, if not more. For god's sake Lohse just got over $10 million a year. Look where signing a middle of the road guy got the Brewers with Suppan....If you are going to have to overpay for hamburger, you might as well just buy a steak.
  18. I know it's a cliche, but CC is the Brewers' Reggie White. The deal needs to be done. There is insurance available for long term deals if he was to get hurt, that shouldn't be an excuse. They need to get creative and find a way to dump Suppan (even if they pay up to half his contract). If Marquis Grissom could be moved, I think anybody can.
  19. How can anyone here not pull for the Dodgers after what they did to the Cubs? My guess is that it will be Red Sox-Dodgers... ESPN will be all Manny, all the time.
  20. I'm not a big fan of David DeJesus. Doesn't seem to do anything particularly well. Pretty much an average player. His name is tossed around quite a bit here so I'm guessing that he has a high on base percentage. Now I'm sure to get roasted here, but how about seeing if the Angels would do a Gary Matthews for Jeff Suppan swap? Though I've been on record as saying the Matthews deal is one of the worst contracts in MLB history, he's basically Mike Cameron lite. Cameron's and Matthews salaries for next year are basically a wash. This is probably one of the only realistic ways that they could dump Suppan. I see it like this: Option A: Suppan + Cameron 2009 = $22.5 million Option B: Suppan alone 2009 - $12.5 million Option C: Matthews alone 2009 = $10 million I'll take option C, which would essentially be Matthews and $2.5-$12.5 million to play with (depending on what you think the team will do with the payroll).
  21. If Hart swings at the first pitch my remote goes through the TV.
  22. Please remove him from the game while there is a remote chance. Hopefully he can be removed from the roster by the beginning of next year. Maybe he can be moved in a big multi player team where the Brewers take a bad contract back as well. If they were able to unload Grissom, one would think that anybody could be moved.
  23. Well, at least we have the token Phillies lucky bloop double out of the way...
  24. Better Escobar than Dillon in my book. For some reason, Sveum was prone to using him as a pitch hitter quite a bit for a stretch, and I can't remember the last time he actually got a hit.
