  1. I don't get the love for Yelich, Brewers already have a glut of OF, and Yelich stats not that great despite hitting in front of Stanton. Santana is a butcher in the field, but arguably has more upside as a hitter moving forward. I have to think that he's getting overrated in the advanced stats due to playing CF, where I doubt he'd be any better defensively than Broxton/Phillips.
  2. Does this have something to do with the whole collusion thing back in the 80's? Paul Molitor was a free-agent after the 1987 season and no other teams showed interest in signing, IIRC. I'm not sure, but the Brewers were players in free agency back in the 70's, signing Bando, Hisle and Fosse, but then nothing after Howell in 80. None of those signings worked out very well on the field, so maybe they were leery of getting burned again. I will say that the Brewers pretty much retained every notable free agent they had outside of Billy Travers until the mass exodus of 92. I don't even think that they went to an arbitration hearing with anyone until one w/ Gantner in the late 80's.
  3. Interesting on the Ryan thing. The Brewers basically didn't sign free agents from other teams back in the 80s. I can't think of any non scrap pile fa acquisition between Roy Howell and Dave Parker.
  4. Was going to suggest Riske as a dark horse, but that was more than 10 years ago... Where has the time went? With Soup and Hammonds both predating this analysis, I think you have to go with Garza.
  5. Speaking as someone who wanted Swarzak re-signed, after seeing these figures, all that I can say is good for Anthony and good for the Brewers for not offering this deal.
  6. No interest in Jordan at anywhere near that rumor. That would be Gary Payton II (pun intended).
  7. It looks like the Brewers may have actually drafted a good pitching prospect in Burnes. I would be irate if they traded him for Danny Duffy straight up.
  8. Bottom line is Saturday should be treated as the first round of the playoffs by UW. Win and you advance, lose and championship hope is gone. Right or wrong, Bama is getting in, and OSU will get in if they win and Oklahoma falters. That leaves two sec teams along with winner of Miami/Clemson.
  9. Avoid fulfilling MLBtraderumors.com prediction of signing Arrieta. Anything else is gravy...
  10. David Green Glenn Braggs A few hitters that put up gaudy numbers at El Paso and the pcl back in the 80s... Anybody remember Doug Loman? If including injuries would have Juan Nieves and Nuke (I remember the double digit strikeout game in his first start).
  11. Sad news. He was kind of the Eric Thames of 1970. Definitely the first star in Brewers history, at least in the fans eyes. Got off to a big start and was even the first Brewer to get the cover of a national magazine...I have a Sporting News somewhere, believe it says " Danny Walton - Next Killebrew?", or something to that effect. After the big start he was injured, and from what i heard, he tailed off when the league exposed his difficulties hitting off speed pitches.... Went on to be one of the better sluggers in minor league history though. Was glad to see that the Brewers invited him back at the County Stadium closing ceremonies
  12. This seems pointless to me. Brewers have plenty of options at second. Kinsler would require an over pay in both prospects and dollars. Same with Verlander.
  13. Stearns needs to step in and cut Torres immediately to shake things up and also to prevent Counsel from using him in close games. Outside of a few outings, he has been terrible all season. He is like negative 1 reliever, because they often need to burn another one to clean the messes that he gets into.
  14. Bad list. How is Todd Van Poppel not on there but Ben McDonald is? He would be right at the top of my list.
  15. For some reason I have a hunch Stroman is their target. I'll say: Brinson Hader Dubon Plus high upside pitcher at High A or lower For Stroman and Joe Smith Way too much to give in my book, but just going with my gut.
  16. Wouldn't work, as Lucroy wants to play for a contender. Oh wait.
  17. Selig was regarded as one of the best owners in baseball at least up to the mid-late eighties. Before the landscape completely changed, he was willing to spend to attract free agents but also to keep his own players. Up until Molitor left, the only free agent of any importance that the Brewers lost was Billy Travers. They were maybe a tick behind the Yankees and angels for spending, but that was about it. I believe that Selig became interim commissioner the same week that Yount got his 3000th hit. Pretty ironic, since that was basically the end of the competitive phase that began in the late seventies. Once Wendy and Laurel took over it was all downhill.
  18. Obviously zero chance of trading Carter at this point. It seems that the Brewers were scared that he was going to push 8 figures in arby and probably were rebuffed when trying to work a deal with him at a lower amount. Call me crazy, but I'd rather have signed him for two years than Thames for three for the same money. Carter was a huge part of the offense last year and could be counted on to play every day. I thought he was adequate defensively at first as well. I don't get the Carter will not be part of a contending team stuff either, as almost exactly the same age as Thames. Don't see Thames as a flip candidate either, if they couldn't flip a guy at the top of the leaderboard in homers with virtually no money due last year at the deadline, why would they be able to get anything of value if Thames comes in and plays well? Heck, there is talk about eating salary with Braun, which I find absolutely absurd.
  19. I hate this deal. They had to give a 4A player a three year deal, really? I guess that Thames will just be the latest of the long list of guys to flame out in MLB, head East to crush a subpar league, then come back to star here. That pipeline includes Cecil Fielder and....? It's not like he's young either. I hope to God that Carter had incredibly unrealistic salary demands, because this guy just screams Mouton to me.
  20. I have to say that I'm happy for the Cubs fans. Not so much the bandwagoners, but there are lots of die hard older fans that don't have many World Series left- the fact that they finally get to experience one in their lifetimes is pretty cool if you ask me.

  22. Glad Williams is gone as they gave him far too many opportunities in an attempt to justify the trade that brought him here. Addition by subtraction.
