I agree, which is why I think Santana is the man without a home. While he would be a nice bench bat, that would be a waste of value. He's another guy that should be playing nearly every day, and that just isn't going to happen the way the team's outfield is currently constructed. Agree. As currently constructed, those 3 need to play every day, or nearly every day. Say 150+ each. And Thames is a plus plus bat vs RHP. Which leaves Braun with like 80 starts and Phillips with zero. Seems something really does have to give. -

Yeah, I agree for the most part. Not a huge difference to me either way and I want those same guys to have a chance. I wouldn't have signed both. -
Eh. I don't agree with ace stuff. I'd certainly be tempted though. Pretty close to ace results for a while, but a fair amount of missed time. 2016 was the only time he's thrown more than 100 innings. I'm sure they were just babying him up until then, but raising his innings by 90% seems like it probably hurt him. He's pretty scary in my book.

You think Dubon is a blue chip prospect on the level of Hader? I'd toss Dubon in and not think twice, but no way am I dealing Hader. That post is 7 months old.

No way I give them Woodruff. I don't think I'd do Woodruff for Sanchez straight up. I'd need more than those 2 just for Santana, but it's not a bad idea.

I don't think Yelich is getting any days off barring injury. He really shouldn't either. Same with Cain, although He likely will be dinged up some, he usually is. -
I'm still not really understanding the Odorizzi love. He was very very average last year (and that may be kind). I'd take a shot at him, but I'm sure not giving much up for him.

Pina was a 30-year-old rookie last year and had a .715 OPS in 12 minor league seasons, many of them in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League and almost always as a prospect who was roughly the average age for players at the same level. There's a decent chance he's worth less than 1 WAR this year. Also, for all the debates about age-related decline going on in the Archer and Yu threads, catcher is the most blatant example of a position where you absolutely can't trust a guy after 30. Pina will turn 31 early this season and Vogt is already 33. If you assume Pina's going to duplicate last year's success, can't you assume Suter will too? Suter was more effective in the minors and is in his physical prime. By that logic, you could say they need a catcher more than they need a starter. They also don't have any projected future starting catchers in the entire organization at that position, or even a sure-fire future MLB backup. There's a very good chance they will need a catcher. Unlike Archer, Realmuto is an example of a guy who's probably worthy of a premium prospect package because he plays a position that's harder to fill by other means and is younger (still pre-arbitration in fact). Pina is a tremendous defender. If he hits, great. I believe he is at least partially responsible for our pitching over achieving. Vogt sucks. No argument there The Brewers don't need to go out of their way for a catcher. These threads avlbout Realmuto and Lucroy are pointless in my opinion. Realmuto because the cost is simply too high, Lucroy because I believe they have a better option already.

That's assuming we actually want all of these guys under control for 3-5 years. It was only a year ago when Stearns tried to give Villar $22M to be our controlled 2B for example. Broxton was a budding Mike Cameron. By April 30th, Thames was a legitimate MVP candidate. Junior was our opening day starter. Times change rapidly in baseball and sports in general. It's not just the Brewers. Look at the Cubs who had a lineup that was the envy of the game in spring of 2017 that is now down to Rizzo and Bryant as the only guys they can truly count on . I think it's a very safe bet that Yelich will be a good to great player for the next 4-5 years. Ditto Arcia and Hader. Braun obviously won't be. Shaw and Thames are iffy to repeat 2017. The catchers are stop gaps. Cain won't be a star for the life of his deal. I'm assuming Hiura will take over by 2019 and will be one of our key players. I like Knebel a lot but his 2017 was almost impossible to top. That's why this is a short term plan. We will hope for the best in 18 and 19 and realize that 20 will be whatever the baseball Gods decide. This is the reason I like Odorizzi. He had a 5.35 FIP last year. That is flat out terrifying.

That's a really interesting take actually (also with the caveat that I wouldn't really trust BW, but he does spew out enough stuff he finds in random places that he does accidentally hit on things sometimes). As soon as it was mentioned Phillips might be needed in an Archer deal I was wondering if there was an OF bat they could throw back our way to lessen the blow. In addition to actually sounding more like "Jack Bauer" than Trevor does, he bats lefthanded, has actually played more outfield than first the past two seasons (last year predominantly in LF, while in 2016 predominantly in RF), and despite not showing a lot of power for a 1B/corner OF type, he gets on base at a good clip and is ranked 73 on MLB's top prospect list. Certainly would make giving up a haul for Archer a bit easier to stomach. Jake Bauers is a high OBP guy who should develop into a solid MLB regular. Maybe the Brewers get Jake Bauers and Jake Faria from the Rays for Santana? Both Jake’s were in KATOH’s mid-season top 100 prospects. I'd do that in a heartbeat. I highly doubt Tampa would deal Faria though.

I'd be fine with this. I would not be fine with Phillips going. As has been stated, he'll play a lot and I'd assume he'd play the 8th/9th of pretty much every game. He is needed here.

That is well and good, but every indication out there says the Brewers are going to acquire at least one more upper-end starter somehow. I don't think "stand pat" is even an option at this point. They are going to get at least one, if not two, and are going to pay a lot of money and/or prospect capital to do it. It's just a matter of who, and at what price. Fine. I'd sign Cobb and keep my young pitchers. All of them.

I've cooled on Archer significantly. I'd rather see what the youngsters have over this year and next. I'd deal for him of course, cut only on my terms, which isn't going to get him here. My offer would be Santana, Ortiz, one of Ray/Erceg, take it or leave it. And I'm assuming they'd leave it.
