  1. there's a joke in there about Fielder being a vegetarian that i wouldn't ever be allowed to say on this site.
  2. Beer 'N Brat mustard? it's buy 2 get 1 free, ya know.

  4. i'm already excited to see Hawing's future relish-tray avatar.
  5. how can you guys be excited about this? Greinke isn't that good--he had a losing record last year! so i'd guess the season-ticket office at Miller Park is going to be particularly busy tomorrow morning. in my opinion, the biggest loser in this trade is clearly Marcum, who only had about a week in Milwaukee of getting to be the cool new guy in town. he deserved more time. heck, i bet he still has some cake left.
  6. you mention a lot of players in the minor leagues who switch positions and therefore get to extend their careers, but that strategy of moving talent to new positions has shown to be very successful. the first player that springs to my mind is Joe Nathan, who started off as a shortstop. it's a market matter just like any other. if there were a ton of young, big-potential players waiting to play, then the leashes would be shorter for starters to perform. heck, we already saw that when Cain was called up last year and replaced Gomez. if baseball suddenly discarded all its retreads and cut loose all the young players who are underperforming, you'd end up with a system filled with players who just plain aren't very good. kind of a wash.
  7. That's why Gord Ash is bald.that's hilarious. i can just see DM showing your comment to Ash and laughing his mustache off.
  8. if you could be the very first one to know about every transaction consideration and every trade proposal Doug Melvin makes, yet not be allowed to tell anybody about it, would you want to know? i wouldn't, because it would drive me crazy.
  9. i don't remember it being mentioned in this thread, but what happened to Delfino that he needs to wear a helmet? i'm also curious what you guys think of Brandon Jennings this year? i've only seen his numbers from a few games, so i don't want to make a judgment from that. last year it seemed to be only his shooting percentage that was keeping him from All-Star status, so is he playing a little better now? does he show like he's developing into a star, or does he look like he'll forever be just a decent NBA player, or is it too early to judge?
  10. after thinking i might head back to North Carolina, i'm starting to lean your way, Invader. talking to a friend that i graduated with, it's tough to get a Park Ranger job, so if i'm offered this job, it's better to take it long-term and just deal with an awful and painfully hot city for a year or two. at that point, then i'd be hugely marketable and could then almost choose the place i'd like to live, and with a good job. the alternative is moving to NC, to the state i enjoy, but then working 5+ years in crap jobs until i find something i enjoy. i think i've been too short-sighted on my wanting to move to a good place to live, regardless of the job prospects. now, i could very well not get this Park Ranger job, and then i may very well head to NC even though they have a horrible economy right now for my field. worse prospects but better contacts, anyway. i just have to make sure that my current situation (working a grueling schedule at two minimum-wage jobs and never able to go out) doesn't cloud my judgment. still homesick for NC, though.
  11. i'm taking Greinke's no-trade list with a grain of salt. i think it's being used more as a power chip in contract negotiations with whatever new team that tries to trade for him. then instead of merely being traded, he suddenly has to power to demand a hefty contract extension or else he'll just refuse to be traded to wherever. no doubt DM made a last-chance pitch to KC using Lawrie, who was no doubt they player they most wanted from our system. hard to figure that DM is suddenly going to cave and meet their asking price, plus it's almost scary to think of what two top prospects he would have to include to replace Lawrie, who was our #1 prospect. i think DM tried, wouldn't meet their demands, and the whole thing is over now. especially with guys like Garza and Shelds (and no doubt a few pitchers we haven't considered), i don't see why DM should have to go crazy for Greinke when there are other options.
  12. that contract seems pretty fair both ways.
  13. a good starter is harder to find than a good closer. obviously tough to lose Axford, but at least we have multiple options for the closer position to see if one of them might work out. plus it seems pretty difficult for us to bring good starters in here, and getting an arby-eligible guy in here and then trying to work out an extension seems like a better way of building the roster than the alternative of paying the DeLaRosa type of middling starter $11M a year to be here.
  14. had a part-time interview today and crushed it, and have an interview next week for a full-time job. now, i'm one to always consider the possibilities, and i'm not totally sure which situation might be best right now. 1. I live in Austin, Texas, right now. only three months, but i'm really missing North Carolina--the mountains, better hiking, bigger trees and a lot of my friends there. poor economy there but some good contacts. so basically it'd be with friends and where i enjoy living, but likely be spending a while at your basic crap job and just getting by for a while. 2. take a part-time gig that pays decent and at least is near Austin. 3. the full-time job interview is in the middle-of-nowhere Texas sorta-near Corpus Christi, so super-hot and super-humid, but full-time and in my field. i find myself still missing North Carolina, though. it seems the quality of the jobs i'm looking at are inversely proportional to the place where i'd like to live. if i were 20 this would be easy, but at 33, i have an equal desire to build a career but also to finally settle down in one place and call it home and not face moving again in a few years. obviously it's ultimately my own decision, but i thought maybe you all might have some advice or have something i may not have considered.
  15. mlbtraderumors mentions the Yankees missed at 7/$150. unless Philadelphia's offer was just insanely more, it's hard to figure why he'd decline those extra two years. that's an insanely great rotation. their offense won't even need three outs per inning anymore.
  16. hard to imagine a world where Oswalt is only the fourth best starter in a rotation, nevermind all the bats they have to go along with that.
  17. I've been arguing the same case...the same case that was seemingly the sentiment of the board as whole PRIOR to this trade. Now we make this trade and our perception of reality changes somehow? you probably have something there. i blame Kyle Peterson. i used to hate soft-tossers, but now it's hard to figure that a soft-tosser walks any thinner of a line between being good and bad than a fastball pitcher does.
  18. but aren't we talking about trading Fielder for the same type of player/s that we'd be able to get if we moved Fielder at the deadline next season? even if it's a small dropoff, there would then seem to be more value in keeping him to improve even that one-year window of winning the division. i have a vision of trading Fielder this offseason for some players, then being in contention next season, then trading prospects at the deadline to land Fielder for more power in our lineup.
  19. it's hard for me to imagine that everyone else in the organization except Macha wanted to see Gamel get a ton of ABs last season, and now that Macha is gone, that we'd go so far as to make our FA plans specifically around finding Gamel maximum time on the diamond. i can only imagine how loud the cheers would be the first time we'd get to see Overbay walk back on the field. i'd love to have Overbay take over for Fielder just for irony's sake.
  20. SF also lucked out by getting some great play from minimum-wage players. maybe we'll have that for the next two years, but it's a lot to be counting on that we're able to find that for the last five of a Lee contract. but then again maybe it's an equal risk to either sign a big-money contract and risk the person not failing, or mortgaging your future by trading away prospects to get somebody good. same difference, maybe?
  21. nobody sees Rogers as the #5 starter for next year? obviously we'll want to limit his innings, but he could do that with skipped starts and all. i'd enjoy seeing Capuano pitch again, but just curious why Rogers' name hasn't been mentioned yet as a rotation possibility.
  22. wow, that's some pretty high praise since i thought every single episode in Season 2 was terrific. really really hope they make an effort to advertise the return of the show to get people to watch it again. so if that India show has taken its place in the lineup, where are they going to put P&R? hope they don't bury it.
  23. everyone knew Holly was going to come back, but that is the ending that everyone knows is going to happen unless you want to anger a whole bunch of people. maybe there won't be a ton of surprises in the final, but i wouldn't mind at all if there aren't going to be tons of surprises. maybe a simple ending would be Michael driving Holly up to Nashua again, but this time not making the same mistake twice and deciding to stay with her. i think a great final episode would be set around the filmmakers introducing a theater audience to their documentary, and then that's what we watch. we'd get the beginnings of the series with all the emotional or funny highlights, ended by Michael's marriage and whatnot. i wouldn't have expected these past couple of seasons for Michael to turn into a pretty normal and intelligent guy, but they've written that development well. instead of idiotic and quirky, now he's so absolutely desperate for happiness, but in a sweet way, and how can you not root for that?
  24. Christmastime is rough.
  25. i'm not one for trading the system for a player, but we'll have about three years to rebuild our system since all but Fielder are locked up long-term. there won't be an immediate need to replace an upcoming FA with a minor leaguer. we'd have those years to develop Fielder's draft picks, or else we'd be in position to just take the best available offer for Fielder regardless of their position.
