  1. that was basically my reaction when i bought my first "$5 footlong" from Subway. apparently "any" means those select few sandwiches that used to cost $4.50. naturally, i only discovered this after they'd already made my $8.50 steak and cheese sandwich. i could have gone to a real restaurant for that price. it also bugs me that pharmaceutical advertisements are forced to list all of their warnings on the tv commercials. but since the drug is prescription-only, then isn't that what the doctor is there to warn you about? they shouldn't be forced to have to say that on tv. and while i'm on the subject, other tv ads will list paragraphs of fine print at the bottom of the screen, but then give you a half-second to try and read it all. if they legally have to include the fine print, shouldn't they also have to offer an adequate amount of time to actually read it?
  2. it makes sense to me that the Yankees will trade Joba mid-season to add a piece for a playoff push, so they're going to be hurting to sign a whole bunch of good SPs next offseason. CC is really going to have them over a barrel and should be able to demand the moon. i'm guessing the only lesson the Yankees learned in missing out on Lee was that they can't offer just a bit more than other teams, but have to offer a whole lot more than other teams. maybe the same will happen with CC and that will be hilarious. i hope CC opts out and signs with the Phillies because that would be sick.
  3. it's Boras' m.o. to wait until FA and let other teams bid, so by then DM will probably have quite a lot figured out with this team going forward. Fielder has shunned any extension talks, yet Marcum and Greinke have both been agreeable to the idea--one or two of them will be extended by September and there isn't going to be any money left to give Fielder. historically, our scouting department has done a better job of drafting hitters than pitchers. DM, also, is far better at finding good hitters than pitchers. going on the strength of that group, it makes much more sense to me to lock up a good pitcher when we have the chance instead of a good hitter. and it's been mentioned already, but it's usually a lot easier to find a good 1B than a starting pitcher. me personally, i didn't really want Fielder signed to that big of a contract before we even got Greinke or Marcum. we have a lot of good $10M guys on this team, and i'd much rather have two of them than one of Fielder. i think $20M would be far better spent if it were distributed, like shoring up our SS or CF positions, a stronger bench, or even just a heck of a lot more bobblehead days (we'll need a Miller Park bobble-roof day soon).
  4. having shorter arms helps. i'm tall and so always struggled with pullups and the bench. my max was only three. don't know what's so bad about the assisted pullup machine, though. there's no better compound exercise than the pullup, so if you can't do too many at first then the machine helps a lot.
  5. michael scott movie?? i like that they've moved the Michael and Holly relationship along with one big step per episode and not all at once, although i can't figure what's left in the relationship to move to beyond a marriage proposal, which would be better left for the final episode. we'll certainly need to see Toby break out of his shell in one act of over-the-top rage. at the least, he'll need to punch Michael.
  6. didn't mean to imply that there was bone in there. we do similar stuff with scraps from pork and beef, too. when an animal is processed, we truly use every possible part of the animal.
  7. MLB TradeRumors gives a lot of Sabathia quotes saying he doesn't intend to exercise his option at the end of the year. i think it's mostly posturing and that assuming he has another great year that he'll opt out. it's a thin starter's market after 2011 and maybe he'll want off the team if they don't finish well this season. but even in a thin pitching market, i can't figure who else would pay him more than his current salary.
  8. http://selfreliantcommunity.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/chicken-mcnugget-step-one-1447-1232141429-13.jpg behold, Danzig, the Chicken McNugget. good cuts of meat pulled off the chicken to be sold separately. then the carcass, bones and all, ground up to a goo. the bone chips are strained out to get this basically flavourless paste. i presume the pink colour is from the bone marrow. add food colouring and artificial chicken flavor and you get yourself a nugget (or a chicken patty). edit: McDonalds denies that they use this mechanically separated meat. apparently it's an FDA law now that companies must mention "mechanically separated meat" on its list of ingredients.
  9. i think there's a perfectly reasonable explanation to why Miller Park is always featured for homerun clips: ESPN Video Guy #1: "Hey, they're wanting us to find a clip of another random guy hitting a HR." ESPN Video Guy #2: "Well, let's do like we usually do--just check the last time they faced Jeff Suppan."
  10. not to be too picky, but it's called a Light Saber.
  11. it all seems like now that he's gone we're really reaching for reasons to hate the guy because then it'll make losing a top prospect in a trade hurt less.
  12. that's a heck of an offer:)i know she won some awards for the book, and i haven't yet seen anything else out there that deals with the same subject. i'm liking that the majority of people she interviews started out completely believing in the socialist system, and only slowly progressed to opening their eyes. it's amazing how little these people have, and i've only just begun to reach the period of the early-90s famine. i was interested in the book in part because i've always wondered how it is that the citizenry hasn't gone all Egypt on Kim Il-jung. reading this, i don't get the impression they ever will, and that foreign tanks rolling across the border definitely wouldn't be seen as liberators.
  13. it's really odd the way that Michael has turned into one of the most normal people in the office and everyone else has gotten weird.
  14. i'm currently in the middle of "Nothing to Envy" by Barbara Demick (2010). she describes what ordinary life is like for North Koreans through the stories of several defectors she interviewed. between the life stories she does a good job of weaving in history and politics without going overboard.
  15. if Metallica played, would we not be allowed to TiVo the Superbowl?
  16. i'd assumed that DM would definitely want to avoid arby with Marcum. even though it's just business, it's probably not great to start the season with the "This is why Marcum stinks" arbitration process and then come back with "so, do you want to sign an extension?" midway through the season.
  17. considering our beloved Alex Sanchez was the first one caught taking steroids, it's not exactly so easy to point out who did and didn't take them based on a player having a big or skinny body type. and maybe it's also not fair to bar someone like a Clemens or Pettitte solely on the basis of taking steroids when there certainly is or are going to be players in the HOF who used drugs and just never got caught or even suspected. i still think Pettitte makes it in. it seems like HOF standards are getting lower, and that voting a middling player in is almost the PC thing to do, like we don't want to hurt the player's feelings by rejecting them over and over.
  18. if the Martina McBride rendition of the National Anthem is hard enough to duplicate, then i'd sure hate to be the singer to have to follow Ray Charles' or Marian Anderson's renditions of America the Beautiful. the Star Spangled Banner has such a deep historical context that i appreciate, which America the Beautiful, though a nice song, doesn't offer.
  19. i can't figure why anybody wouldn't want to perform in a halftime show. it's the biggest audience in the world and has the potential to interest millions of people to your music who might not have otherwise have heard you (despite his popularity, no doubt millions of people haven't heard Springsteen before). plus if you have a new-ish album out, you'd get to play a song off of that. they could make the stage non-slippery, and it would only be 15 minutes of performing in cold weather, which a person can deal with. no halftime show has ever really caught my interest. even this year, that's when i got up to get food and use the bathroom, since i wouldn't otherwise leave to risk missing a single play. even for stadium performers like U2 or the Stones, the show is still so much different and less intimate than regular performances, and the only stage value the Superbowl really offers are the regular groups of dancers on the field. yawn. it all just seems so odd to see during a football game. whichever drum corps/marching band team that wins the yearly contest would be my choice to perform in the Superbowl and would be completely football-appropriate, but it's almost too bad that the Superbowl has become such a spectacle that they have to bring in some big-time singer in to do a show. but i suppose the SB ratings would decline if they didn't have a big singer to perform. i'll vote for Maya Angelou to appear at halftime and read a few poems.
  20. the Beastie Boys. they also split the middle between the geezer rock bands and the all-show/no substance bands of today. they're high-energy and have mass-appeal. Weezer?
  21. is she new to the Milwaukee media scene? it's like she's desperately trying to get us to like her by proving she's a Packers fan through saying something stupid.
  22. if i've only learned two things from Super Bowl commercials, it's that men are alcoholic idiots and women are sexual objects.
  23. i'm not one of those people who were bothered at all by Aguilera flubbing the lines--it's a huge moment and nerves can get the best of anybody. that a singer takes one vowel and stretches it out for 10 seconds of "see what a good voice i have!" has always bugged me, but that seems like more a product of today's pop songs and what people apparently want in a singer. although i really dislike that it makes the song impossible to sing along to. i've always thought that a singer should singers should sing the song as-is so that we can appreciate the lyrics or the melody instead of having to run up and down three octaves at every opportunity. if you have a good voice, then it'll come through. of course it all smacks of "Music these days is terrible..." which just makes me old. though i'd love to speak on the whole Marine flag-waving neo-con comments, that'd be a sure way to kill this thread.
  24. i've always thought it would be nice to have the DH in both leagues at the Minor League level. starting pitchers learning how to hit .080 in the Majors isn't as valuable as all the extra at-bats it would give to developing position players. but of course pitchers need to learn how to hit, too, so i think the decision of a DH or pitcher hitting should be the decision of the Home Team before the game starts.
