  1. thing is, we've got a huge variable in this, in that this high school team doesn't fit the typical population (of football teams, that is). this one had a college-recruited QB and a seemingly great offense. This is akin to trying the experiment with the Martz-era Rams, having it work, then thinking it could apply to all teams. we're talking about high school sports, where one exceptional player really does make a difference. if Ron Dayne's high-school team decided to have him run the ball every single down, i'm sure they would have won a whole lot of games, too, but it's not a strategy that would work of typical teams.
  2. I wonder if a place like Circuit City shows FSN games on their TV displays. i'm thinking just plunk on the couch and start a-watchin. i don't know your situation, but would it be possible to visit a bar-type place but bring a friend and give him the explicit instructions not to allow you to drink? it's not because of an issue, but i'm having the same problem where i live--i'm just really sick of the bar scene and drinking all the time, but the alternatives are pretty well zero. come to think of it, there are some coffee shops in my city that have TVs, so i'd bet there would be some in your area as well.
  3. i pretty much don't listen to Home Plate anymore because all they talk about is Texiera and i'm pretty tired of it. a couple nights ago they were interviewing a minor-league team owner and they even asked him what they thought about Texiera, as if he would have any real insight into it.
  4. Bacon Vodka makes up one pint Fry up three strips of bacon. Add cooked bacon to a clean pint sized mason jar. Trim the ends of the bacon if they are too tall to fit in the jar. Or you could go hog wild and just pile in a bunch of fried up bacon scraps. Optional: add crushed black peppercorns. Fill the jar up with vodka. Cap and place in a dark cupboard for at least three weeks. That's right- I didn't refrigerate it. At the end of the three week resting period, place the bacon vodka in the freezer to solidify the fats. Strain out the fats through a coffee filter to yield a clear filtered pale yellow bacon vodka. Decant into decorative bottles and enjoy.
  5. I say no to either Gary Glover or Gabe Gross, whichever one we're talking about. Glover would be fortunate to have a 0 VORP. I've got to think there are a ton of guys out there who could do at least that and have more experience. I'd far sooner try out someone from our AAA team and see what they could do--at least then there's the potential to be surprisingly adequate. Is Glover even left-handed?
  6. i've been thinking the same thing, Strawboss. Suppan is the mark of consistency, and though he didn't really have it last year for a few reasons, i fully expect him to return to mediocre form next season. i'm a little surprised at most peoples' thoughts about Gallardo, though. he's shown flashes of brilliance, but we're still talking about a young guy entering his first full season. and sure, Parra really wore down last year, but what's to say he'll do it again? since he's young, i expect just the opposite, that he'll be stronger next season, and i'm expecting a slight improvement over this past season. overall, though, maybe a quarter run worse in 09? i'm figuring a better mid-bullpen will be relied upon more and save us some runs. but couple that with my expected offensive improvement and i don't see any reason we can't have the same record as last year. and heck, add in a guy like Randy Johnson or another ok starter and our team shouldn't be all that bad. i'm certainly not the "welcome back, mediocrity" that a lot of pundits are so far. plus Dillard was about our best callup last year, and who's to say we can't have someone who might step in and really perform well.
  7. while reading Francis Bacon? i'm not a total convert yet, but this thread now has me addicted to turkey bacon. curses!
  8. i'm thinking you could easily make that at home and try it out, although i'd bet it'd be all crumbly and look more like Raisinettes. Baconettes.
  9. eh, i think it's some over-talk as far as the cost of living and the playing conditions in New York. provided he's still healthy, it seems certain to me that he'll exercise his opt-out after the third year so he can not only move to whatever city he wants, but make $28M per year at the same time. i'm really thinking that he's figuring on taking that opt-out, and he went and took the extra money from New York because it was nothing but $30M more in insurance in case he gets injured in two years. plus i take any negative comment about a city with a grain of salt. i think you could look at any city and probably get some negative comments about it from some player or another. it's only that few players are open to making negative comments publicly--Lofton can because he's half-retired, but i don't think a younger player would want to burn his bridges like that. i'd bet there are a ton of negative things to say about playing in Milwaukee.
  10. come on. don't be afraid to admit it. you know you'd try it and you know you'd love it. it's not really drunk thread material, but it's late and i've come back from the bars. i'm cooking up some turkey bacon right now, some thick-cut turkey and cheese. it's gonna be awesome.
  11. i just had to buy some turkey bacon when i was at the grocery store today, just because of this thread. i couldn't bring myself to buy real bacon (just because of this thread). bacon is one of those foods that's so tasty, yet off the charts for being bad for you that it's easy enough to stay away from most of the time, like candy bars.
  12. i think i gained two pounds just from looking at that bacon roll. i had an inch-thick bacon steak once. it was good, though once you ply through all that fat, there wasn't much there.
  13. Escobar is still going to play SS. They have Furcal tabbed for 2b.
  14. i know it's totally fine, but there's something about a non-refrigerated egg mixture that doesn't sit right with me. so whatever happened to making it yourself? (and i'll skip with the crummy 'what's in eggnog' joke)
  15. you got me curious how it went. i'm thinking more that it would make for some funny conversation.
  16. geez, it's only one closer that signed out of like six available, plus a closer that Melvin didn't seem to have any intention of signing, anyway. so we're definitely a long ways away from needing to freak out. plus i'm more inclined to think that CC is going to be one of the first big FAs to sign, not one of the last. plus after Gagne, i can't imagine DM is too excited about spending 8 or 9 on another closer anytime soon.
  17. my brother has two of the wooden ones with the metal stands. since they're just sitting in the parents' garage in Madison and he lives 1,000 miles away, i'm guessing he'd sell them (it's two seats connected). just let me know and i can contact him if you'd like.
  18. yeah, it's all politics. DM is certainly not going to tip his hand to fans. if he admitted worry about a position then wasn't able to sign anybody he'd get all the fans riled up. heck, even when Fielder was ready, he never admitted to having a need to trade Overbay, even though there clearly was one.
  19. Jimmy John Slim 5. oh man that's the most delicious thing in the world. or the Sonic chicken sandwich.
  20. for the first time in my life, tonight i ate a pink hotdog. apparently they're common in the south. kinda like bologna if you let it sit in the heat for a while and added spices. worst fast-food experience was the McRib. only later did i realize there were onions on the thing, so when i bit down i was expecting something soft, except i got a crunch. it's not that it was bad-tasting, but just that quick change in expectations completely ruined it for me.
  21. i'm fine with Buck Martinez leaving the morning slot. he's fine, but he's dry and talks pretty slow that he just makes me more tired when i turn him on in the morning.
  22. i'm back home in Wisconsin until Tuesday. I have about 15 pages to research and write for school due on Wednesday, so I'm doing that right now.
  23. heck, i'd imagine the decapitated gorilla and then some light news coverage would attract more attention to the store then a fully-headed gorilla would in the first place.
  24. i don't see any strategy in which saying no to Milwaukee soon would benefit CC.
  25. I think I'd consider this, too. Including Prince might get us a 4th decent piece back in the deal, too, and Boston's got the resources to contend with Boras' inevitable salary expectations for Fielder. The Brewers have options for 1B. None are as potent as Fielder, but most stand to have some degree of respectability. you don't think the Red Sox would be catching the worse end of the deal in that one? i don't see that they'd do that; it's like one starter for three.
