  1. it snowed here in Winston-Salem, NC a couple nights ago if that makes you guys feel any better. it was a high of 28 degrees yesterday and most everyone was complaining about the freezing cold. it got all the way down to 20 here once. either way, i think i'm still moving to the Caribbean next year. i'll accept the occasional hurricane for the complete absence of winter.
  2. and as AT brought up, if Gamel has better range than Braun did, he's also getting to a a lot more balls that would have just rolled past Braun, so the even number of errors with a higher number of balls fielded would make Gamel the better defender. Not that anyone's calling Gamel a great defender, but he must certainly have a greater potential of defensive adequate-ness than Braun. Plus i think Braun was moved away from the position a little faster because we could create a spot for him in LF and because Gamel was coming up behind him. Neither is really there with Gamel.
  3. the joy of sports victories fade. can't say i'm still jumping up and down from when the Packers won the SB last time. plus if i had any knowledge that the Brewers were going to win the WS beforehand, i really think i wouldn't be that excited about the victory. as much as i'd really like to choose the dream girl, i think you'd really have to take one for the team and choose world peace. you could just see yourself sitting on the couch with your lady watching a news report about yet another genocide and you'd have to think "darn, i coulda stopped that." plus, if the world knew you were the one responsible for world peace, it's pretty safe to say that landing the girl of your dreams wouldn't be a difficult task anymore.
  4. i'm of the like opinion that the Brewers' strategy is going to have to be a 4-year deal at something above $20M annually, above the average he'd get for a six-year deal. Then you add on a mutual option for a 5th and 6th year to allow him to get his big money elsewhere. definitely he'd take a gamble that he doesn't get injured, but he'd also be getting a way fatter contract by hitting the market again at age 32 instead of age 34.
  5. is America's Most Wanted still on the air? anyone else remember when Fox wanted to cancel the show, but so many law enforcement agencies petitioned to keep it on. I agree about Cops as a good show. It's one of those that can't be expensive to make (they donate money to the department they're riding with), it probably has a die-hard audience, and they can slip the show onto some miserable timeslot and fill up space. and it's not like it changes--if you like it at all, it's always going to be the same. i'm with you colbyjack, i can see the popular reality shows lasting about forever. more than anything, because they can do short runs during the summer when the sitcoms are on hiatus. plus the fact that they're extremely cheap to make, so they probably don't need gigantic ratings to make a profit.
  6. I think if Laverne and Shirley aired a decade later that it would be on a lot of lists. I'd probably also say that for Taxi and the Odd Couple, too. My list would be pretty similar to what's been mentioned, though I think I'd have the Muppet Show on there.
  7. i can see why people think it's gone downhill some, and i agree. the characters all have extreme quirks in personality, and early on what they did surprised us, and it just isn't as surprising anymore now that we know the motivations of everyone. and Michael is the best example of that. In the beginning he was weird and funny, but i think now that we better understand how loneliness is his motivation, he's lost his surprise and I feel so much more sad for the guy than I find him funny. that's a good question, Why has the Jim/Dwight rivalry basically died? I remember that scene when Dwight was crying about Angela in the stairway and Jim said "I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy" and it seems ever since then things have really mellowed out. Dwight was funny when he was powerful, but now he's turned pathetic, and it isn't funny anymore. i understand it's a natural progression of most any show that it starts moving to relationships, but that means there has to be losers, and it's become hard to laugh at the losers.
  8. i read that report, too, and it made me curious. don't see that particular three-way trade happening, though, as the Yankees have already said they're not going to trade Ian Kennedy for one year of Cameron, so they're certainly not going to give up both. The Brewers would most certainly have to throw in something else into the mix.
  9. agreed, South Park is still funny. and yeah, I've seen a couple episodes of Kath and Kim, and it's horrible; not funny at all. David Letterman could be canceled. His interviews have gotten pretty dull, and Paul Schaefer has gotten pretty annoying.
  10. i read somewhere Melvin was going to talk to CC's agents the middle of the week to basically see if he was just wasting his time or not. Melvin said if it wasn't going to work out, then his next priority would be to upgrade the pitching staff and whatever else his plans are.
  11. That's my thought, too, and Peavey is relatively cheap for a No. 1 starter. The Yankees have $80 million coming off their books this year, so I'd only imagine they're going to spend every penny of it, plus piling on the superstars is a nice way to move into a new stadium.
  12. UFC wants Lesnar to win so bad because he's such a big name and a big draw. They're going to pick a lot of opponents for him that he can beat. After watching his first fight i thought i'd start rooting for him, but he was an undeniable jerk after winning his last one that i can't root for him anymore.
  13. so this chick straddles two lanes of traffic and goes 1 mph, if that, into the gas station. naturally, i'm on her rear since she's moving slower than a parked car. "is that your gray car?" "yeah." "blah blah blah blah blah...." and she wouldn't quit about the whole thing. kept yapping the entire time she was in line. I'm proud that I didn't give in to her ranting.
  14. I know how you feel. I'm in a similar situation with grad school. i only have two classes, but don't work, so i have nothing but free time lately. i've found getting into some sort of routine works wonders, plotting out the times of the day you'll work out or study Spanish or do job-searching. i go to the coffee shop most every day--it's an expense, but $4 to sit around for three hours is a good value. also, i like to drive downtown and go for a ton of walks.
  15. it's the first time i saw this picture, and i'm thinking along the lines of "Don't worry about it, Ben, we'll both be on different teams next year."
  16. i was racking my brain to think of a Colorado player who didn't have a giant dropoff after he left Colorado. Maybe I was thinking too much Mike Hampton or a certain someone not to be named. Larry Walker was the best player I could think of, and he immediately seems like a similar hitter to Holliday. His BA and OBP took a dive that trade year, but that first and last full season in St. Louis, accepting some decline for age and park factors, and he had a pretty similar year to his last full one in Colorado. There's no doubt Holliday is a great hitter however you slice it, so now i'm thinking he should have a pretty fine year in Oakland.
  17. i guess i've never pictured the A's as a "we're going for it" team, but to get a guy who's certainly going for FA next year and giving up a lot of years of Houston Street+ sure seems like this is the A's plan. ...strikeouts are one thing with Cameron, but he's also got a BB/8.2 AB, which Beane has to love. Though i can't figure what the A's would have to offer us anymore with Street gone.
  18. freelance writing jobs can be nice because they're flexible, but they're hard to get and their per-hour pay is pretty low because the articles can take a while to write. Bartender or waitress work might get you the best per-hour pay. otherwise you could look at temp agencies and do some inventory/stocking work for the millions of retail places out there that need christmas help right now.
  19. nobody has ever Ski-Doo'd from Maine to Texas, and you get $250,000 from Guinness World Records if you can do it.
  20. impressive. that must have taken 30 minutes to compose.
  21. it's nice and safe to refuse to sign a pitcher to anything more than four years, but we'll never land a quality FA pitcher at only four. i guess it's either take a risk with a good pitcher or be stuck complaining about a staff filled with the Suppan and Lohses of the world. it's risk-free General Managing, but why would any good pitcher accept that?
  22. i'm with lukevan, i guess i don't see much sense in adding salary to the club when the only apparent upgrade from what we've got is having an innings-eater.
  23. RJ as closer is a pretty interesting thought. and he's always seemed to have such an easy, fluid delivery that maybe regular work wouldn't be all that taxing. heck, you kind of wonder if the dude could be pitching until he's 50 if he decided to become a LOOGY.
