  1. nice. i walked to my voting place at 1:30 today and the line was one person deep. i can only imagine the mass of people once work gets out, though. got to imagine we'll have a record percentage of voters this year, which is pretty cool.
  2. i can understand the English-major point. I've got that degree, too, and it was a lot of those classes that helped me to look at speech and writing with a more-critical eye. That said, it was just a tool for me. The scariest movies for me are the ones that have that degree of "this could happen in real life" like your Poltergeist or Exorcist and others of that ilk. Nice call on The Haunting.
  3. it's almost like DM's hands were tied for the short length of time he had to decide this. even with the idea of sliding Hart over to CF, you still end up with a hole on the team that you need a FA for--you're not guaranteed to get who you want, plus then you get the dude for another five years. I don't think a trade for a guy like Giles would have been the best move, either. Lose more prospects and maybe you get stuck not being able to acquire a SP, which i think is a bigger need for the club.
  4. how so? I still like it, but yeah, the same-ness has gotten a little boring. the episode i got most mad about was the "stewie kills lois" episode that all ended in a dream. they tried to play it off with a joke, but it was just annoying they'd do that. although just as i was starting to like King of the Hill, they go and cancel the series. yet they renew American Dad, which isn't that funny.
  5. i live in North Carolina and don't have a TV, so watching games is extremely rare for me. i can sometimes find a Badger or Packer game on at the bar, but it gets expensive every week. i've seen two Packers games so far, but since they're mediocre, they now tend to take a backseat to anything else i might have going on. and naturally, everyone has the Panthers on instead. I can usually request the Brewers at BW3s on a small tv, but craning your head for three hours on a tiny tv isn't that much fun. I've got XM for the baseball games, and i'll usually catch a night game as I'm going to sleep. i didn't watch baseball after the Brewers exited, either. i have very little interest in any sport unless Wisconsin is involved or has an interest like needing a team to lose. If I can't root for a particular team to win, it all gets pretty boring to me.
  6. i had little time and little money, so i glued black letters (construction paper and stickers) on a white t-shirt and went as an eye chart.

there's always assistant coaching for basketball or football if you're worried about the workload. i've reffed below-grade-9 basketball games before, and that was not only fun, but actually kinda tough. also helped set up chairs before the games started and my father worked the clock. if you don't want the interaction as much, senior centers often need people to read the newspaper onto an audio cassette.
  8. any talk of trading Hart seems more reactionary to me as well, and i definitely don't think it's in our best interests to trade him. could he fall off like Hall? of course, but that's also the potential for pretty much any young player. plus whoever we'd get in return, we'd just be getting some other guy with the potential for a dropoff, too. But he's young and still has got lot of upside to him, like performing fairly well as a leadoff guy, or that he could move to CF if needs be. plus i think finding a quality corner outfielder is easier said than done. you'd figure if we're going to be spending our money on anything this offseason, it's going to be on pitching and not for an expensive FA to take over for Hart. i'm fine with trading Fielder, but i just wonder how much of a power gap that would create in our lineup, not to mention that he's a lefty. And sure i don't see a tremendous future for him as a 1B, but i don't think his trade value would plummet so much going into 2010 as it would trading him right now. maybe he goes and hits 15 more HR next year and his value is probably higher. and if either were gone and we had to go cheap, there really isn't anyone in the system who can take over for them. yeah, Gamel is there, but maybe it's the same thing with him, that we'd be giving up on him learning 3b a little prematurely.
  9. so i guess you weren't a big fan of trading Overbay to bring up Fielder? or trading Sexon for prospects? i can understand the thought of not dropping back into the Selig days, but it's like we've adopted the Yankees' philosophy of wanting to sign everyone to huge, long-term contracts, and if there's another hole on the team we should just sign a big-name FA. also, "just to save money" is only a purely horrible thought when you don't have to pay for it yourself. though i think we could still spend the Hardy savings on someone else, it still might be possible that MA has asked DM to do so beyond the salaries we're already losing.
  10. sorry if i'm restating a previous point, but we talk about Weeks' OBP and SLG and the like compared to other 2b, but batting order really has to be taken into account. Leadoff is unnatural for Weeks, and so how much has that change in approach vs., say, the 7 spot, effected his numbers to what they might otherwise be? since he's more of a first-pitch guy, i just think that a different spot in the order would see a drop in OBP but a significant increase in his other numbers, leading to a better overall offensive player. I'll rip on his D along with anyone, but i just think that offensively, he sometimes gets knocked for not being the hitter that he was never really meant to be.
  11. well put JJHardy7. attendance numbers aren't the sum of a team's revenue. plus Attanasio has already made us a top-half spender. nobody is saying we should drop our payroll to $30M like Selig would, but there still has to be some fiscal responsibility as well. The contention that "winners trade prospects and losers trade good players for prospects" couldn't be further from the truth. maybe we should have traded Braun and Fielder and Gallardo when they were in the minors. plus it's just too easy to say 'sign a FA #1 pitcher' because there just aren't that many out there. CC, Sheets, Affeldt and Dempster are it as far as I know. i'm one in favour of trading Hardy this offseason, but certainly i don't think it's an Overbay situation, that he really has to go to make room for Escobar. it's just we have a strong replacement ready to take over (sure, not as good offensively), and the market conditions right now are great for getting an overvalued return. someone above listed a stat that Escobar would cost us 2 wins vs. Hardy's production, and i don't doubt that. but i'm betting i'm betting that the guy we get in return will be a 3+ game improvement if he's a solid starter or replacement for Hall or Weeks. and it's not like i think the money saved by trading Hardy should just go into MA's coffers, but to free additional money up for free agency. altogether i think the money plus the return on Hardy will be greater than the drop from Hardy to Escobar.
  12. why is it so crazy to think of Escobar as a starter in 09? our team couldn't live with a sub-par offensive player for the season? i'm not suggesting he lead off, but stick him at 7 or 8 and i think we could deal with it. it just seems narrow to me to say "Escobar is worse than Hardy, so don't replace Hardy for Escobar." sure, we drop some with the switch, but i think we'd have a greater increase in talent (vs. the Hardy dropoff) from what we'd get for Hardy, considering the demand for SS around the league. sometimes it seems like once a player gets really good, he's suddenly off-limits to trade. Two years ago we were saying this same stuff about Bill Hall, and last year it was Hart.
  13. most food lasts quite long unrefrigerated. also, the show "Psych" was entertaining at first, but now I find the lead character somewhat annoying.
  14. i'm lukewarm on resigning Sheets just on expected return vs. risk and salary. and of course CC is awesome, but i'd rather $25 million a year go to an everyday player than a pitcher. great starting pitching is nice, and we could have an ok/average rotation without those two. plus if Hall, Fielder and Weeks or a combination were to be flipped, our infield defense should look better, making our starting rotation look better. it's why i'm an Escobar fan, though indifferent to Escobar himself. plus i think we only got 80% of what Fielder, Hart and Braun can really do offensively this year, and i am expecting an improvement next year, so i think an improved offense and infield defense will make up for some amount of a weakened starting rotation. i look at Houston and how well they played this year considering they only had one real starting pitcher.
  15. all i had left was Captain Morgan, Mango mixer and Passion Fruit vodka, and no base but a splash of water. it's pretty good. is it odd that i have gallons of booze in the apartment but no non-alcololic liquids but milk? it's 4 in the morning. i tried posting on other threads, but the words don't seem to come out right. i'm still happy about the Brewers' season and not said about the quick playoff loss. i'm typing slow right now. errors, but i'm an editor by trade, so i've had to reread this for errors about six times. odd, i don't really even care much about the Packers this year. i just tried out that Nicorette gum and it helped the craving for a bit, but i'm smoking right now. i left the piece of gum on my girlfriend's coffee table. whoops. we watched the movie "IQ" and she thought it was sweet. i just finished five days of poker playing in Charlotte, West Virginia, and i did quite well. it's fun to say you're a professional poker player. beats the heck out of some joker minimum-wage job. why am i saying all this?
  16. i don't see why we can't move Escobar to 2B for the time being instead of trading Hardy just yet.
  17. hey, how about an exact parallel to Pam and Roy? a long engagement because she's at school in NY, and Jim can start to hate that guy-friend she has at school.
  18. i put mine into the dishwasher, top rack. (i'm not kidding)
  19. but then doesn't that also make him less palatable to potential trading partners?
  20. i thought leaving McClung in to finish the game was more to save the bullpen for the next two games since we had a big enough lead that he could have handled the 9th if there were no problems. this way he can rely on the bullpen pretty heavily Saturday and Sunday in most any situation. maybe Sheets has to leave early Saturday because his arm really isn't that great, or CC needs to leave early on Sunday since he's been so (willingly) overworked. Sveum has made some tough moves in his short term, but i think that's more a credit to the talent and desire of his players that they've so far performed in this short term. it's not a knock on Sveum at all, but i'm not calling him genius yet, either. I kinda think Yost would have been making the same moves.
  21. i wonder how quickly that's really going to end. you marry off two main people on the show and that's historically the beginning of the end of a series. maybe this dude will give Pam second thoughts or something. plus since Jim didn't really know about that dude, the friend would have been someone not really needed in the show. the fact that they introduced him at all makes me think he's going to play some important role this season. the show worked fine with the big Jim-Pam question, and i'd think they'd want to keep some sort of question open as long as they can, whether that be a "will the wedding ever happen?" or something like that. if i'm not mistaken, isn't Toby one of the writers on the show? so i guess he won't be a regular anymore, but at least would be available for a shot here and there. but with Pam not interested, he doesn't really have much of a role anymore. his vacation being bad was a fitting conclusion to the character.
  22. although how limited might our payroll really be next year if we make the playoffs? that's a lot of extra revenue. i keep thinking of Detroit and how they really amped up their payroll after the won the Pennant.
  23. for a team as bad as the Ms, it sure doesn't surprise me. you're 20-whatever games back, have no chance, and then if you get some guy knocking you for a bad at-bat, no doubt that generates a lot of animosity. i wonder how much cultural differences play a part in it.
  24. but how much of it could be from the switch in the batting order? he played an awful lot of leadoff last year, when you're supposed to take pitches, but you're not so much in the 5-hole. for the drop in his BB%, i'd think that's more a result of a purposeful change in plate approach.
