  1. those stupid tiny snails multiply like crazy, and i don't think they're very attractive in the tank. they're so small, they seem to come free with any fish-related thing you buy. i get a chemical to get rid of the things, then let the chemical work its way out of the water and then get the big snails to clean the tank, though they die pretty quick. I got myself a little frog which is pretty cool, though it hides and I only rarely see it. any tricks to get your fish to breed? I have two of each kind, so it's a mystery which ones might be M/F combinations. but it'd be great if they breed so I don't have to buy new fish as often. (especially if the neons bred, since they're pretty but very expensive.)
  2. there's a medical test for Steve Blass disease now? ------------------------------------------ http://www.brewerfan.net/images/icons/lock.gifLocked and superseded by the newer thread: Turnbow has rotator cuff tear --1992casey ------------------------------------------
  3. my PS2 collects dust. the nice thing about PS2 games now is that they're super cheap. if you don't play video games much, then what's the point of getting the newest and bestest game that comes out? with only a slightly older console, you have the opportunity to search out reviews of the absolute best versions of sports games and get the best-playing ones for really cheap.
  4. a good while ago i used to visit a couple different Brewers boards. posters were much like the people who write Anthony Witrado questions--average fan, no particularly deep knowledge. suddenly i was the guy on the board with all the answers. it was cool in one way, but i sure wasn't learning anything. here i've been very impressed with the general knowledge of everyone on here, and you get your well-informed counterpoint to every reasonable statement made. and i've got a deep appreciation for Colby. i used to know very little about our prospects, but now i can rattle off names like nothing, with their stats, too. who knew there were so many Aruban Brewers fans? all you people on vacation just can't miss a Brewers game!
  5. goldfish are pretty easy, they can withstand almost anything. i've got a 16-gallon. the tank itself is about $30 and the filter is about $30. one of the problems that i've had is that if the power goes out for just a little bit, the filter loses it's prime and most of the fish die. but yeah, don't worry about using tap water, you will get some of that water stabilizer with a whole tank setup, and it'll be fine. I have tropical fish now. the pet store people always tell me they'll grow a bunch and not to have too many in the tank, but none have grown or just die, so you can fit a lot more in there. the neon tetras are my favourites; they're pretty, small (to have a bunch instead of a few big fish in the tank), and they're very cheap. I just got some glowfish and didn't realize they were $6 each. ouch. otherwise you'll pay about $2 for each tetra. i feed mine every other day and have a couple snails in there to clean up the gunk in the tank. another thing i've found is not to turn your filter intake up too strong. it's down now, but those mutant tropical fish can barely swim and i'd regularly find them stuck dead to the intake. but otherwise it's not really that expensive to have fish as long as you don't buy the expensive kinds. it's limiting on the niceness of the fish, but whatever. or just go goldfish--they take any punnishment and live forever. also at a lot of pet stores i've looked for labels according to how delicate the fish are, whether they're "beginner" or "expert" fish, for just how perfect you need to maintain the conditions. but otherwise tanks are pretty nice. they're really nice and visitors like to look at your fish, and they're not like real pets that you can get one of those 7-day feeders and take a vacation and not worry about them dying on you.
  6. 1. I was 5 in 82. 92 was sure fun, though. although if i lived in Milwaukee, I don't think my attendance at games this season would have come from any nostalgia to any playoff or near-playoff season. 2. be a baseball fan for long enough and you'll have a counterexample to any bit of optimism or pessimism. so call me hopeful rather than optimistic about this season. 3. it's not like adding in football talk to my conversations is more of a hassle than just baseball talk, so it's not really an issue. plus it's still just Packer off-season, and watching TT deftly avoid any and all free agents makes for a very boring off-season. 4. Favre wasn't holding up the sky in Green Bay, so i don't think it's going to fall now.
  7. Christian Okoye, Madden 94 for Sega Genesis. kinda like Ron Dayne, a guaranteed 4 yards. the "speed" specialty bench player in MVP Baseball from Sega Genesis. roughly five times as fast as the other players, I'd let the brother catch me in a pickle on purpose just because he always got mad when I could outrun it.
  8. Kool-Aid isn't just for kids. what part of what animal does bologna come from? and isn't bologna the same thing as a hot dog?
  9. it's hard for me to compare Nicholson's and Ledger's take on the character just because the movies were going for a totally different feel. The first version tried to be so much more comic-bookey, like the old tv show vs. this more-serious action movie. but i liked Nolan's take a lot better, that the Joker was just your everyday psychopath who just happens to wear clown makeup. i thought Ledger was really good in the role, though i wouldn't call it any sort of transcendent performance. Some of you have said the same thing I did when I first saw Batman Begins, that Christian Bale is annoying when he's the Batman, the way he always tries to talk in that tough whisper. I don't really get it. Is he trying to sound tough? scary?
  10. Katie Holmes is a bad actor, sure, but i thought it was more that she's so syrupy-sweet that she had no business in Batman Begins. She's got no depth; maybe she'd be better in a fairy-tale type of story or just go back to TV. Maggie Gyllenhall reminds me a lot of Ashley Judd; i think she's pretty good-lookin'. since Drew Barrymore was mentioned, i think she's really overrated looks-wise.
  11. the 2nd best record in the NL in the toughest division in the NL and they're not a good team? on paper, they've been surprising me, too, but i guess it just says what a good manager LaRussa is. i can't compare baseball to football, either. a lucky break one game in football is 1/16th of the season, and it's hard to think that a bad baseball team is going to get that lucky break and win 10 more games than they should.
  12. i don't want to see any player get hurt, but blisters--those i can root for.
  13. i don't know if this is a Winston-Salem law or a state law, but Happy Hours are illegal. you can have specials, but they have to last all day--there is no discounting drinks for periods of the day. You may not legally close your eyes for an extended length of time while at a bar (no, it's not a timed thing, but a sleepy thing). It is illegal to rest your head on the bar. Bartenders may not legally (again, maybe just in this city) buy patrons drinks/offer drinks for free. Nor can bartenders drink while they are behind the bar. Bartenders caught recieve a $1,000 fine and the bar gets a $5,000 fine. Winston-Salem is one of the biggest tobacco regions in the country, and even has a high school named for cigarette company. Yet they seem to despise alcohol and drinkers of alcohol. All these nitpicky rules make a patron's experiece less pleasant than it can be.
  14. living in NC now, i miss Culvers. nothing beats their burgers. But Sonic is growing as one of my favourite places to eat. if i'm not mistaken, Chick-Fil-A was founded or has their headquarters or something here in Winston-Salem. the place has longer lines than McDonalds around here. you get a lot of meat for your buck, but i think their stuff is plain and boring, and their wraps are dry. and as far as closing on Sundays, EVERYTHING down here closes on Sundays--this is the South--so it's not one bit odd that a fast-food place would do the same thing. Even if it weren't for religious reseasons, most everyone just stays at home on Sunday and doesn't go out, so there's not a ton of business to be made that day, anyway. CookOut is a hugely popular place around here. I haven't been, but apparently they have some awesome hamburgers. Bojangles is a southern restaurant here that has to be the most awful thing ever. as bad for you as Southern food already is, this is Southern food fast-food style. sausage buscuits, steak biscuits, fried chicken...
  15. you make an excellent point. I'm the only male editor in the office, and up until six months ago when i first saw the reports, we were still referencing the Montreal Expos.
  16. I'm a proofreader by trade. I'm currently pouring over a 28-page report on Edinburgh, which will see two other proofreaders after me go through it, yet plenty of errors will get through. it just happens, and yeah, sometimes those errors are kinda embarrassing. plus when we're talking about an internet article, it might only be recieving a very quick readthrough by a second person so it can be released faster.
  17. I'd like one official at-bat as a Milwaukee Brewer, just so i'm in the books. come to think of it, i'd like an audience with Attanasio--not for Brewer talk, but for financial advice. I bet he could turn those four free tickets into six! all this talk of Uecker being a jerk is shattering just about every unrealistic and childlike vision I've had of him.
  18. Oh, I love doing that. Nothing like driving along at a good pace, maybe 5-10 mph over the speed limit and getting ready to pass a slow moving car on your right. Then all of a sudden, somebody feels the need to run up your bumber and get antsy for you to pass said car. It's times like those, I just slow er down and stay side by side for a few interstate miles. so it's YOU!!!!!!
  19. there's something about drunken swimming that frightens me..... I've done the paintball bachelor party before, too. it was a lot of fun.
  20. people in the fast lane who drive side-by-side with the car in the slow lane.
  21. why even think about bringing in a replacement like Belliard when you've got Escobar coming up and able to play 2B or SS? and Gwynn, Solome and Villy for Chris Young would be a major steal. SD could get way more for him.
  22. i don't think that's really fair. nobody's talking about completely overhauling the team and nobody's hoping that Prince gets traded in the middle of this season. no team is static, plus we're looking at Sabathia and Sheets both leaving to other teams next year, so if we just sat on our laurels, what we'd get is a 4th place team next year. or if we just brought back everyone on the team from this year, we'd be looking at a payroll of $120 million, which isn't going to happen. My dream is that we can trade Prince for David Price of TB plus another prospect. It'd give us a ton of young talent at the top of the rotation, though i'm not sure what you'd do at 1st base if it isn't Mat Gamel there.
  23. i like to drink as much as the next guy, but to go three hours at a baseball game without drinking doesn't really sound that difficult. Plus there's something about walking away from your kids in a 40,000-seat stadium that i wouldn't be able to do. what bugged me yesterday: going home in the rain on a four-lane road, and this lady just stopped her car right on the fast lane and put her flashers on, just to chat away with a dude who was heading the opposite way. yep, just stopped right there in the lane to chat. I just about hit the dude in front of me.
  24. I'd extoll the virtues of Barrow, Alaska, if someone paid me enough.
