  2. I remember George Steinbrenner noting, and he made a good point, that he spent the maximum of what he was able to on player payroll, and adding revenue sharing only meant that [the Marlins owner] just got to pocket that much more money. The only way I see to fix it is a financial audit of every team with a heavy revenue sharing distributed among every team, and then a mandated player payroll range based on that. I've heard the argument that a team with a lot of young players may not need to spend all that much, but there's always room to add a FA, even on a one-year deal to meet any payroll minimums. Maybe the owners get something like keeping 100% of their concessions money to keep encouraging strong attendance. I recall all this was a big issue toward the end of Selig's tenure. And his "solution" was to add playoff teams to say "see, now small-market teams have a better chance." Heck, last year owners wanted 45% of teams to make the playoffs. But ultimately doesn't MLB want this, that the Dodgers and the Yankees of the baseball world have the best financial chance at making the WS and getting that sweet viewership money? A Brewers/Royals WS would have twelve viewers.
  3. >one that takes a lot of money out of the pockets of the Dodgers' and Cubs' owners and gives it to the Royals and Brewers, on the condition that that money be spent on their teams. I was about to buy a $200 grain mill, and my parents gave me $200 for Christmas and told me I *must* buy a grain mill with the money and not spend it on booze. But that didn't mean now I bought a $400 grain mill. It only means I used their $200 on the mill and could spend my own $200 on booze. If I were interested in pocketing all the revenue from my baseball team, throwing me more money with whatever conditions on it doesn't necessarily change the outcome.
  4. Kinda like how "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" was a line first uttered by Edward Bernays who had been hired to sell more bacon.
  5. Parents nearly fell for the Amazon refund scam today. Had downloaded Anydesk and left for the bank before calling one of us. We had the bank freeze their credit for a while, they're getting a new computer and new SS numbers. I thought that was a little bit much but the brother got upset at me saying that, and especially since he dealt with it there was no reason for me to push it. And he's right that could help prevent identity theft. The brother told them about how they can use AI to spoof a grandkid's voice and I said how they can use html to fake bank balances. Well that was a scare for the day.
  6. Does this game mean Joe Barry gets to keep his job next year?
  7. Giannis moving without the ball so much better lately and actually trying to get involved with some pick and rolls, too. Heck, our offense still has as much room to grow as our defense does. By the end of the season our offense could get downright ridiculous.
  8. If Daniel Jones can get $42M and Geno Smith can get $33 for one good season, $30M for Love is a steal. I wonder if the NFL will ever copy the NBA and institute maximum salaries so that the QB position doesn't suck up all of the cap money.
  9. If anything I'm lower on Love than I was at the beginning of the year. How many times has he gotten bailed out by pass interference calls on his missed deep balls? And he's been forcing throws to covered guys more than I thought he would. But I'll be curious and hopeful that in the offseason he can work on things and come back improved. That and an OC better able to assess his skills and design an offense around it.
  10. Of course who knows if Stroud would look anywhere near as good if he were throwing for Carolina this year. I'd imagine there's a lot of Sam Darnolds and Mac Jones' who'd have been Pro Bowlers if only they played for different teams.
  11. Hopefully everyone did well in this little run we've had the past month.

Lived in WI a long time and I don't even know what Kopps is. Apparently I was missing out.
  13. Even after long-term visits you still take a bit of a leap. A cousin has lived in Puerto Rico a couple years and he's gone from "love it" to "good and bad" to now "I hate it here." Or situations, particularly in non-Western countries can change quickly. Ecuador is a popular expat country, but apparently the crime has gotten a lot worse and a lot of expats are moving away because of it. And there's certainly tradeoffs to make even staying in the US. "Familiar culture" is a big thing even moving within the US. One thing I'm trying to start doing is figuring out just where those tradeoffs rank and what those priorities are.
  14. At first I thought I had to be vague about it since his first assignment required armed escorts everywhere he went, but now I see it's on his Linkedin, so I guess I'm ok:) A relative of mine is a high-up with the State Department including having served in Georgia. I haven't asked him about the current situation, but as time gets closer he'll certainly be in the know as far as safety and living conditions and the like in Georgia or anywhere else I might be considering going.
  15. The bolded part was initially shrunk down, so I thought "What's wrong with any of that?" But then I expanded the post and read the bolded part. Cripes. Still might be worth it for how good I assume Argentinian beef to be, though.
  16. They gave up about nothing to get him. I was more surprised Arizona didn't think he was at least an ok backup to keep around.
  17. I couldn't agree more, which is why I'll end up thinking about it for a long while yet. And not that I couldn't make friends elsewhere, but still friends are friends but family is family. Plus I could certainly try Wisconsin for a while first without making any big financial commitment to it or anything. RVing feels like the same thing in just being gone for good stretches of time. I could conceivably come back from wherever I am and stay with each sibling for a month or so. A cousin of mine is in Puerto Rico now but hates it and will be moving back home to Texas. He said Wisconsin would probably suit me better. And I'll bring it up at Thanksgiving, too. I've certainly got a lot of time and am certainly not at the point I'm racing out to learn Georgian yet.
  18. What's been on my mind a lot lately and ultimately what I have to figure out before "What country" or even "What part of the US" is whether being close to a brother and a couple cousins is worth the downsides of weather I don't like and a low-middle-class standard of living. I feel it's the same even moving within the US since the separation is still there. And obviously nobody else could ever answer that but me. I asked my boss who is also moving away and he had no issue since he'd be regularly flying back to visit. And I'm sure I would, too. Iran or Russia doesn't concern me much at all with Georgia, though. Granted I wouldn't be doing any vacationing in its neighboring countries.
  19. I have a hard time seeing Peralta traded with no Burnes and Woodruff on the team next year. Good luck trying to sell season tickets if you're trotting out Adrian Houser as your team's Ace. Even if we brought in some young SP to replace him, they would be someone BF would be excited for, but the average fan wants a known player and isn't keeping up with other teams' prospects. Of course I'd love to see what a huge value like Peralta could bring back, but filling the seats next year is no small consideration.
  20. So I've still been building my list of expat retirement destinations. Been liking Tblisi, Georgia lately. They have a great golf course I can afford plus joining condos. 1100 sq. ft. for $150k which is pricey for over there. A cousin who lived there said everyone is super nice and it's easy to make friends. Best wine in the world. Obviously there's a downside to any country, and to Georgia it's the 36-hour flight back home. The more I dream about expat life the more I wonder if the reality is that back to Wisconsin is the most practical. Three cousins and a brother I'd be close to in WI, which trumps ordinary friends I'd make in Georgia. The boss is likely moving to Colombia. Ecuador is apparently getting worse with crime that expats are moving away. Cyprus seems like it'd be too hot. Malta is getting dirtier and permanently under construction (noise).
  21. Last week I set a new personal best 31 spam calls in a day. I set the default ring to silent and gave all my contacts a ringtone, so at least I don't really even know when they call.
  22. Packers wouldn't take Maye even if he's available to us. Gute and MLF won't stick their necks out to admit defeat on their guy Love and the added job insecurity that comes with that. And maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't feel like those two are particularly close to being replaced just yet.
  23. I don't think there has ever existed a man buried in more places than him.
  24. Starting to see Fashanu mocked to the Packers in the next draft, which makes me happy. Him plus a FA RT would make for a good OL. I also think Dillon gets undo criticism and his numbers are only poor because of the line in front of him. I'd be happy to see him back next season, though if I were him I'd go to the Steelers or Titans or whatever team values more of a power RB.
  25. Dobbs can at least help convince Vikings fans they're trying to win, so it makes sense. Sure you can tank but you have to pretend like you're not trying to. But what does Chicago get with Sweat now as opposed to just throwing money at him in FA in the off-season? Do they get draft compensation if he leaves or something?
