  1. Sounding like TE Kendricks is coming to Green Bay. An upgrade as the #2 TE, but an odd signing.
  2. Normally I wouldn't touch bitcoin but I recently heard something about China opening up to the possibility of allowing internet currency. http://finviz.com is a good stock screener. http://www.ruleoneinvesting.com/podcast That's a link to the podcast I like the most. The idea is that he's a successful value investor (more long-term than short) hosting with his daughter, who plays the part of the novice investor and asks questions. It's good beginner stuff, though not insultingly simple at all. I'd mentioned dataroma before, but here's a link: http://www.dataroma.com/m/home.php http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/letters/letters.html These are also good reads. Warren Buffet writes an annual letter to his shareholders, which he makes public.
  3. So JC Tretter is on the Browns now, huh? I don't entirely hate the Perry deal. We're desperate for anyone to rush the QB since Matthews isn't doing it so much anymore. But I'm also assuming he'll be a cap cut in two or three years, too. "Just when you think the Packers' secondary can't get any worse, Micah Hyde is a Buffalo Bill." Ah, nothing to worry about. We'll just get ourselves a lumbering 6th rounder, give him a ton of playing time, and act like nothing happened.
  4. Yeah. Pension pays 2/3 of what I make now, plus an extra benefit which basically pays social security from when I retire until 65 years old. My only 401k right now is that I get 5% of my salary (as a bonus, not taken from) put into that. I'm in work-supplied housing right now, which is why I'll need a place to live after retirement.
  5. I don't expect I'll ever have that much tied up in IRAs because I'll be retiring at 54 and as soon as I do I'll be needing to buy a house/condo/apartment.
  6. I agree with you in a sense. I definitely would make more money in the long term by investing additional money and not being in a rush to pay off the loans. Even at a modest return I'd calculated about $800 more that I'd make with investing to the point my loans were paid. But I decided that being entirely debt-free is worth more than $800 to me. I'll still check out the calculator you posted and see if my own figures were about right, though. Thanks.
  7. This should be a fun thread. I'm slowly getting into investing since I've finally found a job. It's partly to feed my gambling itch and partly because 401Ks don't tend to beat the market and so I want to do a lot of it myself. I have 5% going to a 401K (I either use that or get nothing at all, so obvious choice) but want to focus on paying off my school loans before I start putting a lot in each month. Rule #1 Podcast is a good place to start to learn about basics and terms. It's focus is value investing and not a lot of short-term moving around. I also use this Graham Number Calculator: http://dqydj.com/graham-number-calculator-for-stock-ticker-you-enter/ I also use Dataroma.com a lot. Any fund worth $100M+ is required to list their buys and sells with the SEC quarterly. It doesn't hurt to just do whatever Charlie Munger is doing, but I tend to look for people who don't move that much around, look for something whose value hasn't changed significantly since the person purchased it, make sure it's in an area I understand, and do my own research on it. A UNLV study was actually done on this covering about 30 years' time--they bought the stocks that Warren Buffet bought on the day it became publicly known at the worst price that day, and then sold it when the sell became publicly known at the worst price that day, and that still resulted in an average 25% gain per year.
  8. The Bucks have some issues that I'm starting to wonder aren't entirely on the players but on the coaching staff. The effort just isn't there to get a rebound and that shouldn't happen, and they have better defenders on the team that they shouldn't be giving up as many easy shots as they are. Assuming Monroe opts out, and especially if they can manage to offload Henson's salary, they'll have a heck of a lot of money to work with in the offseason. Especially now that they don't have to plan quite as much money for a Jabari extension. Next season may be a good opportunity to pick up some bad contracts for draft picks, along with trading Delly and Snell for the same.
  9. I wouldn't mind a DL if he's a better talent than DB. Peppers has been non-commital about coming back go GB. Likely he'll be looking for more playing time somewhere else instead of the part-time work he'd get here. We really have a need for pass-rushers, too.
  10. In-house maintenance saying they don't have time to do the work (they do). I'm saying I don't need the work done tomorrow. Haven't yet, but I'm going to the boss on Monday to have the bill sent to me instead of being paid by the State. It'd be one thing if it were mechanical error or one of those things which everybody does and it just got away, but my problem was entirely my fault, and I feel like I should pay for it, regardless if the State is willing to pay or not. In-house the rough quote is $1000, but contracting it out is $5000. I want to pay because its my fault, but I also want it done in-house.
  11. Snell is just the sort of player the Bucks should be trading away, just like Henson a couple years ago. Buy low, hope they improve, then trade them away for draft picks or higher-ceiling prospects. Keeping good bench guys around are great once you have your solid core in place, but not before.
  12. The cook turned out great, actually. Did three roasts and 15# (pre-cook) of jerky. The fire didn't happen until early morning. The small burning coal made its way through 18" (or so) of spent ash, some which would have still been wet, before it all ignited. We actually got fire extinguisher training in police academy. It was all one motion without looking at it. I'm just gonna take it off the porch entirely. Don't really have to but it's that extra bit of penance. I'll either go the lazy way and just put down four or five grill pads somewhere in the yard, or I could make a bed with some 2x4s and fill it with gravel, which I can get from work, and put some of those concrete walkway things on top of it.
  13. Well, nearly burnt my house down this morning. Another five minutes and I wouldn't have been able to control it. About four or five dumb things contributed to it, myself being the primary dumb offender. Kept spent ashes in a bin located too near the house. Meant for spent next-day ashes, but one of them clearly was still burning. Burnt through the spent ashes during the night. Ash bin was plastic. Caught a lawn chair on fire. Lawn chair caught the house siding. I have a larger-size home fire extinguisher that got it. Spent the next hour soaking everything and making sure there was no residual heat anywhere. The Lord was kind enough to let me be home at the time.
  14. What saddens me about it all is that to replace Parker you pretty much need a top-tier draft pick, and that doesn't come without a terrible season.
  15. Couldn't feel worse for someone of such character. Now I wonder if next year will be another one of those 'tank for the draft pick' years. This team isn't going to go forward without another star, and not everyone can be an expensive free agent. Inadvertently we've built another Herb Kohl team good enough to limp into an 8 Seed but not bad enough to get a top draft pick.
  16. Just draft a CB in the 5th round and insert him as a starter, right?
  17. Steve Novak was released to clear the extra roster space. Not sure why Charlotte would pick up more salary for a guy who wasn't producing, but I'm thinking maybe there were some rumors floating around the League that he was unhappy for whatever reason and just stopped trying.
  18. The Packers have $44M in cap space upcoming if you include Sam Shields leaving ($8.2M freed). So it shouldn't be a huge problem to sign whatever team FAs there are. I'd like to bring back Lacy for next year. He's a perfect candidate for a one-year prove-it contract, and that would make for really interesting substitutions and combinations with Montgomery. Matthews is a $15M cap hit. I'd like him back to help with the lackluster pass rush, but I really wonder if his production and injury history really justifies the second biggest cap hit on the team. I've seen Logan Ryan (CB, New England) bandied about as the best gettable FA. It'd be nice to get a veteran CB on the team and then focus a bit more on pass rush and linebackers in the draft.
  19. Yeah, the "try it without a special quarterback" line sticks out to me. How does this team do without 12 and maybe an average-type guy like Alex Smith? 5-11? 6-10? All in all, what is TT bringing to the table right now that another GM wouldn't? Ron Wolf always defined a successful draft as one which brings you three starters. Safe to figure they wouldn't have to be immediate starters. So what about TT? 2016: Kenny Clark, Spriggs (jury's out), Fackrell (jury's out), Blake Martinez (is he starter quality or was just thrown there?) 2015: Randall, Rollins (maybe not starter material), Ty Montgomery, Jake Ryan (?), Hundley, Ripkowski 2014: Clinton-Dix, Adams, Linsley 2013: Lacy, Bakhtiari, Tretter, Hyde (kinda) 2012: Nick Perry, Hayward, Daniels By Wolf's standards TT's drafting has been largely successful. Of course the counter-argument to that is if you rely almost entirely on the draft, you should need to do better than three.
  20. I keep remembering when TT drafted Rollins and Randall despite calls to shore up MLB and DE, because he said that with teams being pass-heavy, he wanted to build up the secondary to be very strong against it. And two years later it's still the weakest area on the team.
  21. He'll be pricey but I expect Matthews back just because he's still better than what we'd otherwise have there. GB also has a lot of cap space moving over from this season and will more with Shields and Peppers leaving (or at least Peppers takes a substantial pay cut). I could see Eddy Lacy back for similar reasons. He was putting up a good average in what few games he played this year, and he'd be a good candidate to want a prove-it contract before hitting FA again after next season. Let Montgomery be his primary backup, which would make for an interesting duo. It'll never happen, but with a guy as skilled as Adams as a #3 WR, I wonder what sort of players could be gotten from trading Adams or Cobb to bolster the defense. It's sad-funny that two years ago TT drafts two straight CBs as a bit of a surprise and says it's to bolster the defense against the emerging QBs in the NFC North and now its our biggest weakness.
  22. Gunter, Rollins and Randall. You've got those guys to stop Atlanta's offense. Or maybe the intimidating pass rush will get to the QB. That we even got this far is partly a credit to the job Capers has done, not that we should have won and he didn't do enough.
  23. If we accept the continued development of Giannis, Jabari and Middleton, I don't see why the Bucks couldn't win a Championship. If Giannis hits jumpshots better and Jabari learns some defense that's a "big three" that can compete against anyone else's. Filling out the roster from there wouldn't be easy but it could certainly be done.
  24. If you like drama, the speeches this year are sure to be entertaining.
  25. You certainly could. Smoked chicken is awesome. Although if you're going to put a sauce on them, it may just be easier to put some liquid smoke in the sauce and it should taste roughly the same.
