  1. My only experiences with it are through a main Parks and Recreation website/job board which was advertising a two-year stint running a pool in the Marshall Islands. They offered to interview via Skype. Not out of the country, but there was a similar one for Assistant Recreation Director in Nome.
  2. I have DSL, and a dedicated port for it. Or at least I think it's a dedicated Ethernet port because it goes directly to the box outside and it only has the one connection going to the modem/router. That means I only need a router? If it matters the one I got from CenturyLink is a Zyxel C100z. The technicians have been to my place a bunch of times. I guess I'm a good distance from the junction box (or something) which hurts connection. I understand dropping out in storms, but dropping to 0.2 Megs every night is irksome. I've debated jumping up to the 20 Meg service from 8, but I have this feeling that I'll just be paying more and getting the exact same speeds.
  3. Can anyone recommend a good modem/router combo? My computer and Playstation are on a wired connection, but I use wi-fi internet radio at night. I'm only guessing my current one got fried somehow because I'm only getting 1/10th the speeds I should be.
  4. I think I may be developing a bit of an addiction to ZQuill, the sleeping medicine. I don't have any cravings to take it, but the times I don't it'll take me several hours to get to sleep.
  5. I put the pastrami on a rolling boil for a couple hours and it was still extremely salty, so I chucked it and will try again another time. The beef I'd done previously was just overdone but good on the outside, so I think I just need to be more mindful of pulling it out on time and assume about 10 degrees more during the rest than 5.
  6. Well, first attempt at homemade pastrami. I brined it for about five days, and the recipe said to brine it another day in plain water to get the salt out. I figured I usually liked things salty, so I didn't bother with that step. I just finished cooking it today and it's.....extremely salty. It also doesn't seem that pink, but I haven't cut into the deep center of it yet. AmazingRibs said to cook to 150 (which seemed really high) and then steam it. To help get some salt out I'll be simmering it in some water for a couple hours. Otherwise, the beef and turkey came out well. I don't know what it is, but my beef has always come out overcooked, despite pulling it at the right time. Since I pulled these two roasts early, they're a beautiful medium rare. One beef roast became sesame beef. The other ?. And now I'm dethawing some store-bought pie crusts to make turkey pot pies with.
  7. I'm in the area and was in its path until it veered westward. My area only got about 6" of rain. I'm still waiting on word whether I'll be sent as an LEO to police one of the shelters. I'm being put on standby in case officers there need a break. But lots of people are still in shelters and we've had a few levies break. For the past couple days the governor has been insisting that people in the flood path of a few dams/levies leave the area, reminding them that first-response workers aren't going to enter life-threatening situations to save someone and that choosing to stay will mean that any rescue needed will be at their expense. The governor has done a pretty good job with it all. You'd think it would be well known not to drive through a flooded road, but lots of people do and then have to get towed out and hopefully not washed away. One shooting in the whole thing. Apparently a guy got upset when told by Highway Patrol that he shouldn't go over a flooded road, pulled a rifle out of his vehicle, got shot by HP and died. To note, though, that's news through a few people and details are subject to facts.
  8. Labor Day marks the end of the busy season for me. A few more somewhat-busy weeks to go, but it drops off pretty quickly. Also it appears you can't let anyone go without also having to talk to an angry parent. I'm sure it'll go great.
  9. Thanks for the advice. It's just me on vacation, and I don't really know if I want to hike/camp, do some history-something, or just sit around and get blotto'd for a week. Right now I'm leaning toward driving cross-country to maybe California and just stopping at state parks along the way and camping out. That'd be about 6,000 miles of driving round-trip, but in no hurry to make miles. Otherwise I'm getting my kayaks back next week, so maybe paddling/camping for a week on some lazy river. I see flights to various parts of the Caribbean, but since that's the start of tourist season, I'd guess hotels will price me out of it. My current 10-day vacation has been spent mostly just sitting at home. So far it's been great. Yesterday I bucked up a few trees in the yard.
  10. I have 2-4 weeks' vacation end of September with absolutely no idea where to go or what to do. Want to keep it <$1000. Cruise? Caribbean? Road trip to California? Ireland? It's also bugging me that the nearest safe city to me is 40 minutes away. My church has nobody my age but is the only one around in my denomination.
  11. A job opened up near Boone, NC, the best city in the state. I've always wanted to move to that area. I'd have the job if I applied for it, but it doesn't come with housing. Rent wouldn't allow me to save very much per month. Through benefits, I'll retire with about my current salary+, but that's only getting by. So anything I can save up now represents vacations, buying cars outright, going out, and generally not worrying about money.
  12. Oh, I didn't even realize Yi was still playing in the NBA. But I wonder how much of that $8M will be recouped in new jersey sales to China.
  13. I don't remember names, but I do recall Kansas City before they got good tried a few years of signing veterans with the thought of trading them later on. All they ended up with was a bunch of injured and unproductive players on bad contracts.
  14. I have CenturyLink internet. I was having trouble and they came out, tested the outside box, and I was getting 8 Mbps like I'm supposed to. But the speed test was still terrible, so the technician set me up with a new Zyxel C1100z router. But still the internet drops out a lot and speed bounces around between 7 Mbps to currently 0.3. I have one other phone outlet in the house. Should I switch to that one? I'm not sure what the problem is.
  15. Trying out my new ThermoPro today. Gives a temperature for both the grill and the food, and does so remotely. It's really helped to keep the temperature with the charcoal basically constant. Got up at 5:00 and started it all, to then discover that both roasts I'm doing only take about five hours to finish.
  16. I remember researching this for work last year, and I think I may have made a thread about it, too. I don't remember the specific company names, but what I took from it all is that there is one separate service to stream the games live, and another separate service to stream the games spoiler-free after they've finished. Of course there's always the option to pay game-by-game. Especially if he's going to school in an AFC city, the Packers are popular enough that there's a lot of games on national tv that you wouldn't need a streaming service for.
  17. I think he would have broken Rose's record had he began his career in the US at a usual age. One of the 20 best players in history. And by all accounts a great human being, which makes it impossible not to root for him.
  18. My immediate thought was that Plumlee is exactly the kind of center they're looking for and they can't risk letting him go and then struggle to find a replacement. Maybe he's just "meh," but we've sure seen what an opposite-playstyle player can do to the team. Signing Plumlee to a contract like that maybe isn't so much about finding a center but making sure Giannis and Jabari can continue to develop with a center who allows them to play to their strengths opposed to a center who restricts the rest of the team. Sure, we could complain that Plumlee is being overpaid or he doesn't quite have the talent to be a starter, but nobody was complaining last year that he was a hindrance to the team the way the more-talented Monroe was/is. People have complained about Thon being a stretch at 10 or maybe that Plumlee is being paid more than his talents dictate, but maybe it's necessary. Hammond is reaching if you look at talent, but he's paying market prices to make sure he gets players that fit a particular mold.
  19. My folks converted from a screen porch to more of a sun room and get a good four months more time out of it. And it does seem like people gravitate to whatever room of the house has the most sunshine, so the sun porch is pretty popular. Granted, that's a significant price jump from the screen porch.
  20. Well, one Summer League game doesn't mean much.
  21. I shouldn't have added chili powder to the beef stew. Didn't add much, but now it has a slight "chili" taste to it. Oh well, who doesn't enjoy both? Cumin is a good spice I like to add, though it has that sorta 'dull' flavor and it always makes me tempted to add something else.
  22. I just finished two pork roasts. The 10-hour point was the first time I checked temperature and they were at about 175. Little too warm. Anyway, what purpose does tenting serve?
  23. Lebron has already tweeted a goodbye to Delly. With the Cavs over the cap as it is, they're not going to match. Looks like all that's left is possibly/probably trading Monroe and MCW.
  24. We met in a park. She's very much a park person. So the first meetup we went hiking in a park. She suggested another get-together at a park. She seems to have a lot of guy-friends. I'm beginning to wonder if that wasn't a date so much as I'm her park friend. The advice I've gotten has been to suggest an active but date-y type place next time and see how she reacts. Though since I interpret women about as well as I do Cantonese, I'm also inclined to just sorta ask--though that's a really weird and awkward question, as well as putting her on the spot.
  25. it's not like we're so loaded with depth we can't fit him at the end of the bench and improve his skills through practices. We pretty much did that with Vaughn last season. If we're not bound for the playoffs, which seems like a 50/50 proposition, then he gets some time on the court later in the season just like Vaughn got. If he takes the roster spot of JOB is anyone going to notice?
