  1. Santana put up big numbers at every stop, and WAY young at every level. First extended MLB playing time last year and killed it. Great production this year since he came back. Only time he hasn't hit at that level was earlier this season when he was injured. Can he be a star? Of course, he has always shown that. If he can stay healthy he has a very realistic chance of being one of the game's premier power hitters.
  2. Or, put another way, Davis would have been exactly the type of player the Brewers would have loved the past 30 years. Thankfully, a new era has begun. Now true talent is sought after and trivial things like HR, RBI, and obsession with LH power bat are marginalized.
  3. That works both ways too. I come down from Appleton, and would much prefer earlier starts so I can get back home at a decent hour. True, lots of people can't leave work early, but lots can. I know from talking to a lot of people in the Valley, they hate going down for weekday games and getting home at midnight. Earlier start times really help with that. I would actually like to see them have 6:10 starts mixed in. Leave from here at 4:00, and still get there in time for the game.
  4. Yea, that's smart on their part. I've been saying for years it's not the length of games that's the biggest problem, it's end times during the week. I'm sure they're just testing it, but hopefully they move up Wed/Thurs games too- especially in April, May, Sept (school months.)
  5. Well, I still plead for patience with Nottingham. He actually had 3 really good months this season at the plate, cancelled out by 2 horrible months. But the guy was THREE years younger than average AA player. Also struggled defensively, and as a catcher especially I think offense/defense are related when you're struggling. I'm not ready to give up on him as a hitter or a catcher. Let's just pump the brakes a little and see how he does next year when he repeats AA.
  6. You are delusional if you think Ryan Braun and his contract will be bringing back top quality pitching. Yea, because guys that OPS .914 grow on trees. And, as others have walked through in great detail, his contract is very reasonable. It would be a lot for the Dodgers to take on, which means the Brewers may need to take on a salary dump player like McCarthy from the Dodgers to make room. Once that is resolved, now you're just talking about value. And Ryan Braun is worth a top pitching prospect any way you slice it.
  7. Definition of polar opposite of moves they should make. And you continue to trot out this "must have LH power bat" mantra even after that theory was decimated in another thread. I wish I could say you're just trying to be provocative like an AM shock jock. But I think you really believe trading prospects for an aging catcher is a sensible way to rebuild.
  8. Next year's rotation doesn't matter to me. I could take or leave Puig. And I would be willing to take on a Dodgers salary dump. All that stuff is superficial. Get back two real stud pitching prospects, with at least one of them in AA or higher. DeLeon plus a high ceiling A level pitcher for example. Get that back and tell me where to sign.
  9. Nobody is suggesting Braun should be traded for Puig. The Brewers obviously weren't interested either. Now, if Puig comes along with a trade as a salary dump, fine. But he can't be the main piece coming back. Plain and simple, one of their big time pitchers has to be the centerpiece. I also believe the Braves will be heard from by the time this is done, something tells me Braun could be convinced to go there.
  10. What about Kirby and Taylor Wiliams? Thought Haudricourt said in thread below they would be ready for fall instructionals? Then again, that's what I get for trusting info coming from Haudricourt.
  11. Part of that is due to some aggressive placements. Another part is due to having two parks not very conducive to developing players. Those are not excuses, it's reality. With that said, in no way does that explain away all the regression. I was hoping Stearns would have made sweeping changes in player development his 2nd day of work, but I'm hoping it gets addressed this off-season in a major way. Also, I hope they ease up on the aggressive placements this year. They went that route last year and results were not good. That doesn't mean you can't push anyone, just be a lot more selective.
  12. Doesn't matter who the catcher is the next couple years. After that, they will have plenty of money to spend on an avg catcher in FA. Can't expect an All Star at every position anyhow. That's worst case. Best case Nottingham develops, or eventually one of the young catchers. I just don't see it as a problem, especially not for at least two more years. Side note, they got Pina and Pinto for nothing. That combo would have produced avg production at the position this season.
  13. I noted him in my "players to watch" notes at the end of my Top 25 post. Easiest way to put this, if he put up these same numbers this year in BC, he would have made my list. At that age, in that park, yea he would have been more interesting.
  14. He also has one draft under his belt. Yea, I know he isn't directly involved with that. But he is the GM, and the buck stops there right? Way too early to tell on that as well, but at least early returns on Ray and Erceg look encouraging, as well as a few others. As for Davis, good for him. He's hitting a bunch of HR again. That is valuable, and I don't agree with people who just dismiss 40 HR as nothing. But they needed Santana to play every day, obviously he got injured but you can't foresee that. Nottingham could be a bust, a mediocre catcher who can really hit, or a multiple All-Star at 1B. We have no idea, still way too young. Heck, we went through that with Davis. Nothing prospect, then huge A year, struggled and we gave up on him, then found his power stroke again. So we have no idea what Nottingham will become.
  15. What it tells me is analytics often can't predict if/how/when you players will progress. Segura is a great example. Had some really good milb seasons, and showed the same ability for stretches in MLB. Suddenly it's set in stone he has hot starts, then sucks. Truth is, some guys take longer than others to consistently hit MLB pitching. We'll never know if it's due to changing where his hands start, change of scenery, getting focused again on baseball, or any other reason. But yes, good for him, hope he continues to have a good career.
  16. Seriously? That's amazing, even for him. Wish we had a running thread of Augie-isms.
  17. Who was it this year? Or last year? Smith was the only lefty for quite a while. Also Sam Freeman this year and Neil Cotts last year And Sean Nolin
  18. Not meaning this in a condescending way at all, but one of the reasons he's projected to be a solid big-league bat & not just a no-hit all-field SS is that his BB & K rates were good the whole way through MiLB. They declined in AA & AAA, but that's to be expected when you're quite young at both levels. He's a very talented batter. No offense taken. His walk rate was 5% in AA and 6% in AAA. Hes at 10% so far in MLB, so I'll stand by my impressive/ surprising comment. He really has been more of a free swinger the last couple years.
  19. Other than Villar, if the Indians would have gone for those deals it would have been done.
  20. Yea, I wouldn't even take a top 25 guy for Arcia or Villar. 6 and 4 yrs of control, respectively, for a really good player, and the other starting to prove it. I'm in the camp that every player is always on the table. But I just can't see anyone offering enough.
  21. Man, Scooter is always juuuust good enough to hang around on the roster.
  22. I was just looking at this yesterday. The cut off is 130 ABs, and Arcia is at 119, so as Outlander noted, should be in the next 3-4 games. I couldn't remember if it was 130 plate appearances or 130 ABs when I was looking. But it is the latter. Arcia has been our #1 prospect since the 2nd poll - mid-season 2014 - when he beat out Tyrone Taylor by a single point. Amazing what can happen to two guys at the exact same spot professionally. Taylor is now #30 on our list. Wow. If I'm not mistaken, isn't 10 innings the cut off for 27 year old LH pitchers?
  23. Doesn't really matter what we think, he will get his chances this month. If he's good enough, he stays on the 40 man next year. He has options left, so at worst he can be one of those back and forth guys when needed. Just have a feeling he can succeed in the pen though. Quick delivery, lefty, soft tosser...just brings something different for an inning that could be tough for hitters to adjust.
  24. It's the kind of deal I think more players should jump at, but few do. Sure, you can out-perform your contract, as Lucroy did. But to me, there's more value to the player to get more money now and be set. Now, should the Brewers offer that deal? Easy way out, I don't know. Probably yes, because money won't matter the next couple years. May as well offer a deal to Perez too.
  25. Why hasn't Elmore been getting any starts, I thought they were tanking?
