  1. I don't expect them to improve next year, at least not W/L record. Bullpen won't be as good as this year, and rotation (at best) will be marginally better.
  2. I agree. Maybe in the off-season after he has a little time to reflect. Everyone is saying how great it is he's hitting in AA, and it is. At the same time, I'm not sure it's a good sign that he got in a funk he couldn't get out of, for whatever reason. If/when he ever makes it to MLB he will struggle. I hope he doesn't just shut down when that happens, because there's nowhere to promote him to get him to focus again.
  3. I don't think the closed the book completely on 3B for Gatewood, but 1B is the plan for now. As a former SS, hopefully he is athletic enough to be able to play both positions as he moves through the system. Or, if he plays 1B really well and hits .800 plus, probably no sense in moving him again.
  4. Yea, I don't like to talk much about the system to family/friends. Friend of mine was glowing about Ghelfi, how he's going to be a great player for the Brewers in a couple years, etc. I get that all the time about various "non-prospects." I don't bother explaining or correcting anymore. I just say "Yea, he's a good player." Really the only time I'll take the bait is if someone wants to be argumentative about it, act like a "know-it-all" when they are so wrong. Kind of like most of sports talk radio when it comes to the Brewers, now that I think about it.
  5. Exactly, it's cost certainty that's the goal. To have a successful minor league operation requires a lot of marketing skill. You market to families and groups with promotions and atmosphere. The team is way down the list. Some markets make a lot of sense from the baseball perspective, with weather etc, but don't hold attraction as entertainment alternative to the local population. Right, that's why you pick the right people to run the minor league teams. Just like any other facet of the organization. It costs a lot to pay scouts too, they could do away with that and just use a 3rd party scouting service. Yea, you're going to lose money picking a bad city and/or poor marketing. So...don't do that. Like anything else, if you pick the right people the affiliates will do just fine. Even if they don't, it's not like you're losing tens of millions a year or something. So worst case scenario you lose a little money and avoid ending up in places like CS, Fresno, Vegas, BC, etc. Then when you DO find a good home it's only for two years.
  6. I suppose this topic is bound to come up on any fan site for any sport every year. But I'm a little surprised CC is being questioned. He may or may not be the answer long term, but he has done nothing this season for anyone to believe he's not a good manager. Look at the rotation, that should be end of story. Then you have Santana out most of the year, and four major pieces traded away. They actually have more wins than I would have thought, I'm guessing more than they "should." Given those circumstances, CC has kept the troops together, and they keep fighting. Not sure what else he's supposed to do, my guess is if he had a better stance as a player it wouldn't have resulted in any more wins this year. Also, It's not always as simple as being a good/bad manager. I firmly believe in having the right manager for a team at the right time. Some teams have more leadership from within. Some are very young, others are vet loaded. And we can go on and on. I'm sure there a few great managers who transcend all that, but there's no way to prove any of this.
  7. I've never understood this either. Seems like it makes perfect sense for a team to control the destiny of their minor league affiliates, especially a team like the Brewers where it's essential to develop their own talent. Is it just a case of "this is the way it's always been done?" I mean, even if they broke even or lost a little money it would be worth it.
  8. Sixto Lezcano Randy Ready The Toolbox
  9. Seems like the term caught fire ever since the Lind trade. I know I've used it, seems to perfectly define a talented rookie ball level player. That's why I use it at least. And no offense taken, I can see how it can be annoying. My BF.net annoyance- TOR starter and #5 starter. Here's how see these defined in BF.net: TOR Starter: We must have a Kershaw or Strasburg in order to compete. #5 Starter: Anyone who is not a TOR starter, and/or doesn't have a 98 MPH fastball. Seemingly, there is never any nuance or in between.
  10. Really??? Yes, I am a 9 year old boy.
  11. Agree with the obvious guys, but I really hope they find a way to protect guys like Taylor, Roache, Coulter, and Rivera. I don't want to give up yet on Roache's power, and the other 3 are young enough to develop into MLB players. I would protect them before low ceiling guys like Wren or Orf. I think a real house-cleaning is in order for the 40 man, lots of mediocre/bad relief pitchers and AAAA type position players that had their chance.
  12. Won't bother repeating all the obvious reasons for not bringing him back, already stated perfectly by several posters. I will just add they also have Liriano. No idea if they still want to give him a shot or not, but I rather take a look at a young guy who got busted in the face over an old CF that can't hit, play defense, or run the bases. Unless he can pitch now, move on.
  13. Wang continues to rise.
  14. Collymore down to .176 BA. What the heck is he still doing there?!?
  15. I could quibble here and there, as we all could, but overall I think we did a good job here. I can live with this list. Lots of guys on this list with either bad years or draftees from 2016, so list consists of a lot of guys with more potential than results. In fact, I put exactly half in that category 13/26. Also, 14/26 are pitchers.
  16. We are so far away from worrying about who's going to play 1B for a WS contending team. And for those who are worried, we found two of them for a song (Lind and Carter.) You're not going to have an All Star at every position, and it will be easy to find a serviceable 1B either inside or outside the organization.
  17. What does that mean?
  18. "Sources say." Good luck with that, means nothing to me. I'll believe Mooky Wilson was the main piece the Brewers wanted before I'll believe an un-named source from NY.
  19. Because they can get by one inning at a time throwing their top end fastball, instead of trying to do that for 6-7 innings. Sure, they still need to throw enough strikes regardless.
  20. Get what you're saying, but I don't think swimming skews anything. No different than track & field, where there's even more medals on the line. Gymnastics, pretty much the same thing- lots of medals up for grabs.
  21. I don't know that he's "behind" Pina. It's just that Pina was already on the 40 man, that's why he got called up instead of Pinto. I could easily see them flipping those two for next season.
  22. Sounds like he still needs to learn how to pitch. You don't need your top-end FB every time. If he can stay even near that range though, there's no hurry to send him to the BP. Let's see how the year plays out. Brewers need innings eaters like this for the next couple years anyhow.
