  1. Only in Milwaukee/Wisconsin would we look a gift horse in the mouth. Former and new owners willing to put up half the money, and that's still not good enough. Why is it that so many people only pay attention to a new arena, and have no interest at all in millions being wasted elsewhere in local and state governments? The big picture, which hasn't been talked about enough, is developing the entire Park East corridor- which has and always will be a wasteland without a new arena. Look at the development downtown- it's all East of the river. With a new arena, that brings new hotel, retail, office, residential that would never exist otherwise. That's a lot of new tax dollars coming into Milwaukee. Frankly, I thought the presentation yesterday was pretty self-explanatory. It will cost more to do nothing. The costs to maintain the Bradley Center and losing the jock tax costs more than paying for a new arena. If you add the tax revenue from all the new development around the new arena, it really becomes a no-brainer. Then again, nobody ever accused Milwaukee as being forward-thinking.
  2. Parker really isn't ideally suited for the 4, but he's not ideally suited for the 3 either. Again, on offense it really doesn't matter what label you five him. But on the defensive side of the floor he has to guard a bigger, stronger 4 in the post or a quicker 3 out on the court. Either way, most nights you will have a tough time matching him up on someone he can handle. Yes, he's young and can better at defense. But I just don't see his body type ever allowing him to be a true 4. Best bet may be for him to trim down and play the 3. Either way, it will take a couple years for this to work itself out and they very well may be in position to trade him or Giannis at some point. Just way too early right now.
  3. I wouldn't worry about that. Hector Gomez or someone else could play 3B the rest of the year, what does it matter at this point?
  4. I don't think it's crazy from purely a basketball standpoint. Not sure about a trade for Russell specifically, but I would be open to a trade. Parker is a tweener. Which is not an issue on offense, but it is on defense. With that said, it is crazy in the sense the Bucks would never trade him- at least not now.
  5. They have the votes in the Assembly, probably have the votes in the Senate but that will be a closer call.
  6. Except he's not a .900 OPS guy. He hasn't been that for over the last 1000 plate appearances. Yes, I know he had a nice hot streak where he put up a 1.000 OPS. Like others have said, every hitter is capable of hot streaks. Braun is still a good hitter. Labelling him as a '.900 OPS guy' is a bit of a prop-up though, isn't it? Which is why I didn't call him a 1.000 OPS guy. He is not that player anymore, partly because of him personally, partly because OPS is down across the board in MLB. So no, I wouldn't expect him to produce at the level he has over the last month. But I do think .900 is realistic. But even at .850 his contract is reasonable for many teams. Teams weren't scared away by Nelson Cruz PED use, or as said earlier, Hamilton's issues- which were far more worrisome than Braun's. Lots of other examples. The issue isn't whether this new procedure "works." It does, it freezes the nerve. It's not like one day it can't freeze the nerve. The only question all along was his grip on the bat, could he function, etc. And he has proven he can play with it. Now it's just a matter of how often he needs this procedure.
  7. Doesn't remind me of Wang at all. Wang was much younger and HAD to be on MLB roster. Perez is 24, and happens to play a position(s) where the Brewers are actually deep. I would rather bring up Rivera, or frankly keep Herrera around in case someone needed a utility guy late in the season. Herrera is capable of getting hot enough to trade for a mediocre prospect at least. I don't know what Perez gives you.
  8. Comparison to pitcher's shoulder is similar, but not the same. From everything I've read, the procedure does "work" it's just a matter of how often he needs it repeated. The net effect is his thumb is numb. And he has now proven he can hit just fine with in numbed. So whether he needs this done once every couple years, or once every couple months, it really doesn't matter. You're right, it is not a cure. Just as glasses/contacts are no cure for poor vision- but they are a functional solution. I see Braun's thumb closer to that comparison than a pitcher getting cortisone shots in his shoulder.
  9. Why? Why wouldn't a playoff contender want a bat like Braun, and a manageable contract? Look at the massive dollars being thrown around for talent far less than Braun, and some of those deals are for players older than Braun. (Pujols for example.) As far as other deals go, sure, maybe prospects are overrated. But just dumping the contract alone is a plus. There are no guarantees, but KC is pretty pleased with the Greinke deal. Every example of a trade for prospects you can give me that didn't work out, I can give you one that has. But I would trade Braun in a heartbeat to get out of that contract and have even a 50/50 chance you get true value back.
  10. Meh. That was said about Fielder, Hart, Sexson, Burnitz... all kinds of guys. And Braun is less popular right now than all those guys. Fans move on to the next, just as management should. Trade him.
  11. I still think Braun is very tradeable, as long as he keeps hitting the way he has. Maybe not today, but later this season, or the off-season. Why? 1) I've said it over and over, but his past PED use does not diminish his value. Plenty of other guys with PED use have been traded, signed as FA, etc. He did need to prove he can hit post PED use, and he is doing that. 2) His contract is very reasonable for a .900 OPS guy who still has a few prime seasons left. 3) This thumb thing can be managed. Everyone gets off a few guys here and there, so this is no different. 4) Who would want a .900 OPS guy? Question is, who would NOT want that?
  12. AKCheesehead, Yes, we have purchased the contracts of Wagner and Cravy, but now that their 1st options have been used, let's send them back and forth as much as we want. So the next time we need a 5th starter is June 9th. Wagner pitched the 31st. So he won't be eligible to return. We'll likely turn to Jungmann or Thorny for our next outing, but then I could see Cravy back. Or Jorge Lopez
  13. I wouldn't mind an alternate with the state of WI on it, depends how it would be done. Maybe it could be muted a little. Since that light blue seems to be inching into their color scheme, maybe that color will be their alternates too. (Which, again, could look cool if they do it right.) But I agree, no black please.
  14. Newcastle at Miller Park is fitting. They just missed being relegated, and the Brewers would be if MLB had the same system as the Premier League.
  15. Melvin cornering the market on middle infielders every bit as much as the Dukes cornered the market on frozen concentrated orange juice. (I hope the three of you who understand the reference enjoyed that one.)
  16. Yes and no. Most teams have a position in charge oh pitcher development. Part of the problem is the position is too far down the chain of command. The other part is petersons role wasn't all-encompassing. My vision would have this person hire pitching specific scouts, huge role in the draft, naming pitching coaches and instructors, and much more. He would a half step down from the GM.
  17. This. I have said before, without any reaction here, that the Brewers should establish a Senior VP-Pitching (or whatever they want to call it.) Reports directly to GM, with dotted line to Owner. This would be the single most important thing the Brewers could do to turn things around. One thing I've learned in business is that intense focus is needed to change anything. I firmly believe baseball isn't much different. Find a proven star from a pitching rich organization, and give him the authority to do whatever he needs. Let him bring in new scouts, new ways to develop pitchers, new coaches. Anything. Everything. Let the GM handle the big picture for baseball operations as a whole, and this VP-Pitching would be wholly responsible and accountable for identifying and developing pitchers. Goal should be to take the Brewers from where they are now to a top 5-7 organization for pitching talent. Do that, and you've WHOA SOLVVD a lot of the problems this organization has today.
  18. I would be happy with those, I think. They don't look gaudy, too busy, trying to look cool, etc. More on the clean/classic side, which is what I was hoping for.
  19. I was just thinking about this. Let's say Lucroy and Gomez are traded. That would mean the Brewers line-up many days could have 4 guys hitting under .200. Pitchers spot, Maldy, Schafer, and Gomez/Scooter/Herrera/Sardinas. Not saying you don't make a trade because of that, it would just have to be some sort of record to have 4 guys in the every day line-up hitting under .200 this late in the season.
  20. Personal taste, but I like Brian and Bill and the way they play off each other. Nice mix of having fun, yet paying attention to details of the game. Has Coshun ever completed a sentence without adding "to be sure?" That drives me nuts for some reason.
  21. I like the enthusiasm, but Escobar had a .700ish OPS last year, hard to imagine Arcia being WAY better than that- especially since he doesn't have much power either.
  22. The whole Braun saga is a bigger deal locally than it is nationally.
  23. Every time I see a thread like this I almost cry reading the names of all the pitchers who flamed out- mostly due to injury. There's got to be 30 of them in the last 20 years or so that looked like rotation pitchers, and many of those with the stuff to be top of the rotation guys. What a shame.
  24. How do you think he compares to Alcides Escobar at the MLB level? Range, arm, hitting, power, etc. Just seems like a reasonable comp, but I haven't seen Arcia play defense for a couple years years now...
  25. If we were the Cardinals, playing the "right" way, there would be a lot of Braves HBP tonight.
