  1. That may be true, but I don't like it. McClung isn't stretched out enough to give you a quality start. I'm hoping the plan is to give Dillard a shot. I'm sure the plan is to bring Parra and Cody up at some point this year, but I like the idea of giving guys like Burns and Dillard a shot first to see what they can do. With all those potential startes, I would hate to bring McClung out of the bullpen.
  2. So if Parra isn't ready to come back, our starting rotation is: Gallardo Suppan Looper Burns Dillard? Only one word comes to mind... yuckie
  3. At some point Macha/Melvin have to face reality. In the past, Hall could at least hit LH pitching even when he was struggling. Now, he has absolutely no confidence. Either use him as a late inning defensive replacement or send him down. There's just no reason to start him over Gamel vs LH pitching. I understand if you're paying a player what they're paying Hall you want to get whatever production you can from him, but this is Turnbow like. Jump at any deal that is out there for him, even if the Brewers have to eat half his salary.
  4. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Let's not forget Bogut was selected (in part) instead of Chris Paul or Deron Williams because they already had TJ Ford and another PG who's name I forget. PG will probably be the BPA at 10, and that's who they should pick. Flynn, Lawson, or Holiday would be a great pick that low in the draft and any of those guys would be as good or better an overall player than Sessions immediately. In a way, I like drafting at 10 this year. You get a proven player. Earlier in the draft you're "forced" to take high celing guys that may not pan out. Heck, I wouldn't even like to be at #1 and "force" to spend the max on Griffin.
  5. I don't think they'll be atrocious. If Bogut and Redd are healthy, along with these other pieces, they'll be a below-average team. Not something you want to build your marketing campaign around "Your Milwaukee Bucks- at least we're only below-average" but I don't think they'll be atrocious either.
  6. What?? Of course Bowen will make the team. Definitely a Skiles type of player- defense first. Sure it's primarily a salary dump, but having Bowen here for a year hopefully helps instill a defensive, tough-minded attitude that can reamin after he's gone. They really do need to burn it down before they build it back up. I know that's been tried before, but it's the only way they get out of this hole. I really hope they sign Charlie V- i fear he's the very definition of a contract year player. Get Flynn, Holiday, Lawson...a point guard with some real ability in the draft. Throw in Bogut, Redd, Sessions, Alexander, and The Prince... that's where you start from. Then next year they have a lot of room for a big name free agent, and there's many that will be out there.
  7. I think we need to seperate journalists and broadcsters who cover baseball vs the sports talkers. I dismiss the sports talk shows as entertainment, not journalism. I do listen, but it's for fun, to get the pulse of what sports fans are thining, etc. As far as broadcasters covering a game, they're allowed a certain amount of cliches. Happens across all sports, even by the very best. I don't think it's worth calling someone on the carpet for describing a player as a "winner" or "gamer," etc. These guys have a ton of time to fill, and Eckstein will always be the "gritty Eckstein." It really doesn't bother me.
  8. True, but this isn't a binary argument. It's not either you take a walk, or you swing at bad pitches. Look at Fielder for example. He has runners on base with two outs, Cameron to follow. (Back when Cameron hit 5th and ws really struggling.) Prince gets a fastball down the middle with the first pitch. Is it better for him to swing at that, or work the count for a walk with a struggling hitter coming up behind him? So it's not that walks are "bad" or even generally less valuable than a hit. But a walk can't drive in runs (obviously bases loaded is the exception.) A walk is NEVER a BAD thing, but there are many times when a single is MORE valuable. Would you agree with that?
  9. Any GM should always be on the outlook for a trade that helps the team. Maybe I'm being picky, but I'm sure Melvin is always looking for a front of the rotation type of starter. The don't grow on trees. I am against a rent-a-player type of move this year. On the other hand, if a trade can be made for a #2 tye of starting pitcher with a few years left on his contract, I would take a hard look at trading any combination of Cameron, Hall, Hart, Hardy, Kendall, Suppan, McClung, etc. Even Hoffman depending on where the Brewers are in August.
  10. And what exactly leads us to believe Hurricane can hit ML pitching? It doesn't solve every problem. You're taking away power, and giving more ABs to a guy who is less proven at the ML level than Gamel is. I would start Gamel every day at 3B and McGehee every day at 2B. Counsell is used as a PH and "super-sub" with a couple starts a week at 2b, SS, and 3B. That's what I would do for now. And I would flirt with the idea of hitting Gamel 2nd or 5th for a few games to see what happens.
  11. Well, I don't look at it as personal. I think having Gamel play 3B every day gives them the best chance to win. Even though he has struggled at the plate, his numbers are better than Hall's. Look, it's very difficult for a young player to PH. Pinch hitting is hard enough for guys who have grown into the role, it's much tougher for a young player who's not used to sitting on the bench all day. No matter whay gamel does in June and July, it won't cost them the season. So put him at 3b every day, and I bet his numbers are close to that .771 in the chart above. If his fielding is that terrible, then I'm all for revisiting that plan. We have no idea if this has been done, but Macha really needs to have a talk with Gamel and let him know there's no pressure on him. The pressure is on guys like Hardy, Hart, Kendall, Parra, Suppan, etc. The fans and media have bigger fish to fry.
  12. I dismiss the notion tht he's cold. .644 OPS is not good enough, but it's better than Hall's. And guess what" It's virtually the same as Hardy. I just don't think he's that "cold" or really struggling at the plate. Some of it is Hardy-itis, he's hit the ball to the warning track in deep center three times that I recall. If a couple of those go out, his OPS is suddenly over .700. With only 80 plate appearances it won't take much to get his OPS over .750, and for a rookie I think we could all live with that.
  13. The logic of sending him down doesn't make sense to me. The argument I'm hearing is that he should go down to work some things out, then come back later in the season...right? Well he wsa alredy red-hot when they brought him up from Nashville! So you send him down, he starts hitting more and then you bring him back? Won't he have the same struggles he's having now??? Every player not names Ryan Braun goes through growing pains, and all you're doing by sending him down is delaying that natural process. He's looked bad at times, but he has also shown some real patience, and has delivered a few timely hits. He should be starting every day at 3B (DH doesn't give him the experience in the field he needs.) It's NOT the same situation as Parra. Manny has had success at the ML level, he just needs to get out of the spotlight and work on a few things. But Gamel is as ready as he's going to be, now he needs playing time and as many ABs as he can get.
  14. For day games, just move the mound back 6 feet, problem WHOA SOLVD
  15. I think it needs to be more. That describes a #3 type pitcher to me...a Dave Bush or Brandon Looper. Someone who isn't great, but generally gets you deep into games. Much like the promis of Suppan when he came to the Brewers. Solid starter...will eat a ton of innings. I think with an ace you EXPECT him to win every game, not just have a chance to win.
  16. I'm sure pitchers don't like the fact that foul territory is alost non-existent in all the new stadiums. Having the roof in-play in the Metrodome shouldn't be "part of the game" but it is. I have to believe most parks have shadows at some point in the day, it's not just Miller Park. Bottom line, there's not a lot of day games. Players have never liked them very much, and that won't change if they retrofit Miller Park with a giant pair of Raybans.
  17. "You know it when you see it" is a pretty good definition. Someone you feel real comfortable building the rest of your rotation around. Someone the other players on the team would consider an ace. A real quick example... an ace better beat a crappy Indians lefty tonight.
  18. Wouldn't surprise me if guys like Cameron, Hardy, and Hart were on the trading block later this year. Even if the Brewers are in contention, trading any of those guys may not be a bad move. Pitching, pitching, pitching and/or a young CF with a high OBP would be nice to have in return for any of those 3 guys.
  19. Another option would be to move Gamel to a corner OF position and let McGehee play his natural position-3rd base. I know, not the power numbers you want from 3B, but Weeks would make up for that by having higher than average power numbers at 2B. It will be interesting to see if McGehee is still over .300 at the end of this season. It will also be interesting to see who roams CF next year, could very well be Cameron again.
  20. It's beyond his current slump. All of April was a slump too. He basically had 2 1/2 good weeks this season. For whatever reason, Hardy is generally protected by this community, while Hart is crucified. As far as the hitting coach goes, none of know how Sveum gos about his job, and what affect he has on players. But just like Yost, or any other coach in any sport , sometimes change for the sake of change is a good enough reason. Personally, I think MAcha has to be much quicker reacting to the "hot hand." Hart is hot, should be moved to the #2 or #5 hole as long as he's hitting. Cameron has predictably fell off after his red-hot start, should have been moved down by now. Hardy may "feel confortable" in the #2 spot, but I'm not comfortbale with him going 0-28 in front of Braun/Fielder. I don't think Gamel is used properly either. He should be starting 6 out of 7 games or so, and moved up in the line-up.
  21. I agree, and it's interesting Hardy has the opposite problem. He almost never swings at the first pitch, which often times seems to be a fastball right down the middle. He's just not a good enough hitter to have a 0-1 count all the time. This team started the year following the seemingly simple concept of swinging at strikes and not swinging at balls- regardless of the count. Now I'm seeing guys biting on "pitchers' pitches." Off speed stuff low and away, fastball at the shoulders, etc. Even Braun is reaching at outside pitches more often, but he's good enough to foul them off at least. Now if I only knew the cure.
  22. But he doesn't have those 5 more hits. 5 more hits could have meant a win ot two, so it's not an insignificant number in a month of ABs. He could have had 5 less hits too, and be under Mendoza over the past month. But yes, I do cut him some slack because of the way he produced for the fisrt 5 weeks of the season or so. I'm looking at the future though. And I don't see him offering Braun/Fielder much protection for the next 4 months. In fact, at this point Macha doesn't have anything to lose by putting Hart in the #5 spot (even #6). Before his tailspin last year he was extremely productive in that spot. OT, but I think Gamel needs to be moved up as well. I think the bottom of the line-up needs to be Cameron, Catcher, Pitcher.
  23. Hardy doesn't get a free pass with me, neither does Cameron. You have to consider where these guys are i nthe lne-up as well. Hart buried in the 7th hole, you can live with someone struggling there for awhile. But when your #2 and #5 hitters are giving you almost nothing for an extended period, that really kills your run production. Yes Cameron has 12 HR and was red hot, but he is spiraling downward rapdly. Hardy's stance is goofy (technical term) and I think prevents him from consistently hitting line drives. He has to pull his hands in, then up, close his fron foot, then swing all in a split second. That's just way too busy to have a consistent approach. Has he been "unlucky?" Sure, to a certain extent. But that is far from the sole reason he's struggling.
  24. At least HArt is buried inthe 7 hole. Hardy isn't ding much better, and he's in the #2 spot. I rather have Hart's numbers at #7 than Hardy's at #2.
