    They actually have quite a few players that could have value. I was thinking about Suppan myself. If any contenders have injuries to their staff, Suppan and Looper would be safe guys to get. You know exactly what you're buying. Same thing for guys like McClung, DeFelice, and Coffey. And what about Hoffman?! If a contender needs a closer down the stretch the Brewers may can quite a nice deal for him. Even guys like Cameron, Kendall, and Counsell may have some real value. And how about Mcgehee? Sell high right? Possibly even an opportunity to unload Hall. You want Trevor Hoffman? Fine...but you're taking Bill Hall with you. Really a nice chance to unload salary in additon to bringing in more youn talent. If someone offers the right deal for a Hardy or Hart, sure you have to look at it. But if they can trade some of those guys above, they may get more in return than you think. In fact, I've been on the fence but I think I'm convincing myself the Brewers should be sellers this year. Seems like a year where there's more potential buyers than normal, should it's a good year to be a seller. As long as it leads to a legit run for it all next year, let the bidding begin.

    I don't think anyone is advocating trading our best prosepcts every year to make a run at the playoffs. We can debate whether it was wise last year, but I can understand why it was worth a shot. But as you said, quality pitching is usually what gets you rings, or at least a legit shot. I believe the Brewers need to walk a delicate line. Acquire a true top of the rotation type starter for at least a four year contract without literally giving away the farm. I don't want to trade top talent for a rent-a-pitcher again. (Still haven't heard if it's realistic in MLB trades to trade for Holliday and extend his contract at the same time.) That still makes sense to me. Wrap him up for 4 years, and send over Hardy, Suppan, Heether, and Hurricane. Or something close to that.

    I agree, Those splits, streaks, etc. are the RESULT of weaknesses, not the cause or explanation.

    A bit OT, but since Halladay has become part of this discussion I have a quick question. Is it realistic in MLB trades to extend his contract as part of the deal? I guess what can be called "sign and trade." I'm not real big on trading Gamel or other top prospects for 1 1/2 years of Halladay. BUT, could the Brewers rework his contract to a 4 year deal as part of the terms of the trade? If they can get Halladay for 4 years, I would be willing to part with Gamel. But there would be a lot of other players that may get Toronto's attention. Some combination of Hardy, Hart, Suppan, Looper, anyone in the minors other than top pitchining prospects and Escobar. I would love to see that come together. Otherwise, plan B would be to wait for the off-season and shop for a FA or trade. Finally, if the Brewers want to be sellers, they have a lot of players that would interest other teams. Hoffman, Suppan, McGehee, Cameron, Counsel, Kendall, anyone in the bullpen besides Stetter. Each one of those players could be a piece contenders are looking for, especially if injuries pop up at a certain position. So in theory, they could further stock the farm system making it a wash if they trade a couple for a big time pitcher in the off-season.

    I agree, that's why I'm not advoacting another rent-a-pitcher for top farm talent. They need to clean out most of these bad salaries this year and next. But my point is replacing Hardy and/or Hart won't have a significant effect on winning the World Series. My previous post was looking at the big picture. What will it really take to win the World Series in the next few years. (I'm assuming we all agree that IS the goal???) The only way that happens is to acquire or develop #1 and a #3 starting pitchers to go along with Yo. I just don't see getting to the promised land without that no matter how much you change the line-up.

    It's interesting to me that almost the entire discussion revolves around position players. This team will not win the World Series this year or in the near future with the current rotation. (And by current I'm including Bush and Parra.) You have a #1 and a stream of mediocrity after that. And no knock on Gallardo, but he's not exactly a "tested under fire" proven #1 starter. We can talk about Kendall, Hardy, Hart, etc. We can talk about the chances of Fielder staying long-term. Sure, all those things matter. But no matter how that turns out, this team will not win the World Series with Gallardo, Suppan, and Looper being the three guys you put out there in the playoffs. I give Mark A./Melvin a pass this year. See what they really have in Parra and Bush before you spend a ton of money on a starting pitcher. But the time has come. I don't see anyone in the system who can be a #1 or #2 type starter next year, or probably even the year after that. Trade or let the contract expire for Hall, Cameron, Suppan, Kendall and probably Hardy and/or Hart. Maybe you have a shot at Fielder, I doubt it. Now you are left with very manageable contracts at almost every position. Gamel, McGehee, Escobar,Salome/Lucroy, etc. That should put them in position to trade for or sign a younger top of the rotation type of starter, and another starter who is close to that. Maybe that 2nd guy comes up through the system which would help. If they don't do that, they will continue to be an entertaining team to watch- always with a glimmer of hope. But they won't get to the finish line, yet alone win it all.

    This tells me they're still thinking about who to add to the 40 man, and Burns spot on Saturday probably is not in stone. I didn't notice Eveland was released, that's interesting.

    I think they are. If he is giving you next to nothing, you just can't afford to have him waste a spot on the 25 man. His salary bought him a lot of time and opportunites, but Melvin has proven he will eat the salary (see Turnbow.)

    If Gamel doesn't get more ABs than he's getting, then I agree he SHOULD go down. I just don't think that's the plan. I'm sure that has been one of the topics of discussion over the last two days, how to get Gamel more ABs. I still think it's Parra and Cody coming up. Going down? How about Burns and Hall? I just can't imagine Hall getting more and more opportunites, at some point you either have to trade him and eat his salary, release him, or send him to Nashville. When Macha says over and over that production is what counts for playing time, he can't justify playing Bill Hall. Narveson is another good call to be sent down, that makes sense too.

    I think it means Parra and Cody come up to replace Burns and McClung in the rotation. McClung goes back to the pen, and Burns goes back to Nashville.

    I couldn't disagree more. Managers, GMs, Head Coaches in all sports have every right to publicly chastise a player. They know their "employees" better than we do. There are times it does a world of good to call out a player publicly. As far as Braun/Melvin goes, we may not know the whole story. Perhaps Braun has been told not to spout off about things, maybe even recently. IF that's the case, it would explain why Melvin chose to call him out.

    Or if Cody pitches well, Parra may have to wait longer. Like Mid August when Gallardo's arm falls off.

    I never would have imagined the spin put on Braun's comments. However you want to slice and dice what Braun said, didn't say, or meant to say he called out his teammates. You just don't do that. Of course he's right, everyone knows that already- most of all Melvin. That's what makes this puzzling to me. I'm sure Melvin was shocked to hear a rotation that includes McClung and Burns isn't the best rotation in baseball. So Braun has to state the obvious and throw players under the bus in the process. Managers can do that for their own reasons, so can the GM and owner. Players have no business speaking publicly about needing to improve the roster. What good comes from that?? If he feels that strongly about it, go talk to Melvin and Mark A. and share your concerns privately.

    He was when the DH was being used, it's been far less than 2/3 since.

    I don't think stolen bases is the issue. It's speed to get from 1st to 3rd, speed to beat out IF singles, speed to avoid a DP, etc. Hardy is a good guy to have at the plate for hit and run, not that Macha does much of that anyhow. It would be nice to have your #2 guy be able to bunt very well- for moving runners over and bunting for a hit. But again, that's not a big part of Macha's game. For me, OBP is the most important thing I'm looking for in a #2 hitter. Hardy doesn't fit the bill there, but I'm not sure who you would put there. McGehee is working nicely in the #5 hole. About the only other way to go is Gamel in the #2 hole vs righties...assuming he plays again. Hart would work there too...it's pretty even between him and Hardy.

    If I was a conspiracy theorist, I would say it looks like a trade is being worked out in the near future, and that's why Gamel is here. Could involve Hardy or Counsell.

    Wit this team, "hot hand" is at least as reliable than trying to figure out who is the best option for a line-up spot based on past performance. I mean, what numbers do you use as valid for Hart and Hardy? That's why I like McGehee in the 5th spot for now. He's hot...could last another week...he may stay hot all year. But you can't predict what Hart of Hardy will do all year with a straight face. And you know what to expect from Cameron. When he' cold, bury him down in the 7 hole. When he heats up move him up. Bottom line, the 1,2,6,and 7 spots will be changed constantly and I don't think it can be avoided.

    How many guys were traded to Houston for cash and/or future considerations? Seemed like there were 3 or 4? What are they up to?

    I wasn't as big on Holliday for the reason listed above. A guard in a wide open offense like UCLA should have been more productive. I wanted Lawson, but it does make me feel better that both players were picked quite a bit later. Tells me there's a consensus that Lawson won't be as great an NBA PG as I thought. Jennings still bothers me though. A player at this level who still needs to learn the PG position troubles me. You wouldn't think you would need to teach a PG coming into the NBA how to run the offense, the nuance of playing PG, etc. Apparently the kid's jump shot is off too, and he's no defensive wizz. I understand the upside. Since all I've seen of him is a few clips last night, kinda hard to judge. Meeks was a great pick at that point. A good defender too, believe it or not. This kid can come off the bench immediately and help with instant offense. I don't think this draft means Charlie V is back. There are still trades to be made, free agents, etc. I just can't believe after all this salary dumping the Bucks would give a big contract to Charlie V. Doesn't add up. That would be going right back to the same mistakes this organization has made for years. Paying huge dollars to a guy who isn't a major piece of the puzzle.
