  1. We really were not at $90m this year. Wolf deferred $4m.
  2. I think we are probably better off trading McGehee or Gamel. They will probably bring a bigger return and once Fielder leaves we can just slot Lawrie in and shuffle guys around to find our best defensive alignment. I would prefer to trade McGehee because I think Gamel will be a much better player and he is younger. We could extend him and buy out a few FA years if he is good enough. McGehee has one less year of service time and it would make little or no sense to extend him since he will be 32 to start the season in his first year of FA.
  3. Different sports. NFL and NBA coaches make a much bigger impact than MLB managers and actually will do things very differently. Offensive and defensive schemes and such. MLB managers manage mostly the same, which is a problem. Managers can make a difference but mostly don't. That is why it would be nice to get an outsider instead of a retread. I see Samuel put up a .333 record as interim manager in Baltimore this season. That and a .500 record in one season at a AA squad does not make me feel that he's a viable candidate. The fact that he has chosen to coach in the majors rather than manage in the minors tell me that he wasn't willing to pay his dues. Going further, I'm not interested in hiring a manager based on the needs of Gomez and Escobar. I agree with the last sentence. As for the rest, why should a guy turn down a MLB job to go to the minors. "Hey do you want to be in the majors coaching." "Nah, I have to go down to the minors to pay my dues. I like making less money."
  4. We had plenty of options for CF. We didn't need Gomez. Gomez being a puke this year just added insult to injury. I went off of Cot's contracts for Gomez salary. I misread it. It looks like he was at $1.15M. I think we might be looking at a payroll less than $82m next year. We are at $90m but in reality that is more like $86 with Wolf's $4m in deferred money. If we have to pay that $4m in 2011 that takes us from $86m to $82m next year.
  5. I don't like the return in Hardy but I think we kind of had to play Escobar or trade him. It is just to bad he failed so miserably.
  6. http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/179/37dce1be436d.jpgThat is a good start.
  7. What I am saying is that we shouldn't eliminate a team just based on financial considerations.
  8. We can pick up part of Fielder's contract if the return is right. Don't forget that.
  9. We lose the #15 pick if we don't sign the guy. If we don't sign the #11 guy we will get the #11 pick the next year.
  10. Edmonds/Cain most likely. Much cheaper than Gomez. Gomez wasn't a minimum guy. He was a super 2 and is now into his arbitration years. He made $1.5M this year.
  11. Jeffress could have another positive drug test. Jeffress is no longer subject to tests for recreational drugs. I think the number is something like 8 starters a year. I will have to double check. I will probably do that this weekend sometime when I do the quintiles again.
  12. Don't forget Wolf also deferred about $4m.
  13. Sigh, I hate you Carlos Gomez.
  14. I stand corrected.
  15. The thing I find most hilarious about that picture is there is a good chance none of those guys are Brewers in the near future.
  16. 4.22 ERA in '96. 3.95 ERA in '97. A few new guys and a few moved between the pen and starting. Nothing any other manager wouldn't have done in that position. Mulder and Hudson were only there for 2 of Macha's years in Oakland. You are obviously entitled to your opinion but I think you are using selective memory. I am mostly going off of things Melvin has said more than his previous hires. We are at a different stage as a team right now than when most of those guys were hired. I am also not sure I would technically count Svuem amongst the hires. He was more a guy who happened to be around knew the players well. Given the job because bringing a guy in would have disrupted things to much.
  17. Sad but true. I said it last time after Ned was fired but we are not going to get a good manager hired if Melvin is the one doing the hiring. So would 27 other GM's. We should go with these as guidlines but will probably go with these
  18. You skipped the one I would vote for none of the above That is a truly bad list of candidates.
  19. If that is the case we can also blame Valentine for turning the Mets into losers before he left. I questions how crappy the team he took over in NY really was since they managed to win 88 games in his first full season. Ken Macha was a winner before he came here. He was 2nd half manager. He was good with young guys. Nonsense. He was a manager just like the rest. The really sad part about managers is that they can make a difference but most take such a cookie cutter approach to managing they are mostly the same. Most just manage to keep their jobs instead of doing the right thing. Then in the post game interview all they have to say is "that is how the game is played" or some other canned line.
  20. Where is Gamel in your plan?
  21. do think he can improve his plate discipline...but it will take a manager that penalizes him when he loses focus at the plate and goes away from his game plan at the plate.....You can't keep running him out there and expect him to change... Gomez has just over on seasons worth of PA(665) over the last 2 seasons. I know he was injured but as of right now, he hasn't changed his approach despite 2 different managers making him sit the bench for a good portion of the season. The only penalty that might get through to him would be a demotion to AAA. If so, he was the one who started Jeff Suppan 30 times last season. Considering we didn't have 5 guys who were clearly better than Suppan, that isn't something we can really hold against Macha. Might as well blame him for Looper while we are at it.
  22. I don't get all the Bob Melvin talk. He managed successful teams and no matter what there are always going to be a lot of people who think managers who manage winning teams are good. I am very apprehensive about a new manager because I fear they will give Gomez a free pass for sucking over his entire career. Gomez has nice skills to impress but at this point I think it is apparent he just cannot get the job done.
  23. Add "not recently a manager for another organization" and I think you have a good start for guidelines.
  24. Meh, big deal. The next guy is going to suck as well. We are probably going to get stuck with another "baseball guy" who will manage pretty much the same as Macha. i think the right manager could get a lot out of Gomez, for example... I don't. Gomez has no plate discipline despite getting only sporadic playing time each of the last 2 years. It is up to Gomez to improve and he has shown no signs of doing so. Basically, Macha inherited a playoff team and put out two mid-90's Garner-esque type records- with twice the talent, mind you. You can cry and pout about losing Sheets and Sabathia, but he did have at least one legit pitcher in the rotation in Gallardo. Macha was stuck with no starting pitching for 2 years. The only guy he had that pitched well was Gallardo. The rest was chaff. Macha didn't inherit a playoff team.
  25. Beltre for his defense might be good. Not sure I would like his bat though. His OBP's are sort of up and down. I would be more comfortable with Gamel's offense than Beltre. I would choose Beltre on defense though. If we were to sign Beltre I think one of Gamel or McGehee would have to get traded.
