  1. I think no way. He barely plays passable defense at 3B. It would have been nice to get him in the outfield but it is really in the teams best interest to give their players every possible chance to succeed at the toughest possible position. Braun is still a bad defender in LF but at least he has some physical ability that can make up for those shortcomings in LF. I think he has poor defensive instincts and at least in LF he has a little time to use his speed to make up for that.
  2. For the money Fielder is likely to demand we could probably get both Dunn and Weeks.
  3. No I really don't expect Weeks to get much better on defense. I expect him to be about average going forward. With his hitting ability that makes Weeks a very valuable player at 2B. One of our positions of strength on the team. I didn't want to move Braun off of 3B. I wanted them to give him at least a couple more years there to see if he would improve. In hindsight, I think they made the right choice. The defensive metrics are as objective as they can be. They are much less subjective than scouting reports. There is no way a scout will see every ball hit to every fielder at any given position. Scouting reports used in conjunction with metrics are best. That way you get a good feel for what a player could potentially do.
  4. Zaun http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/banghead.gif
  5. Words cannot express how stupid I find walking the bases loaded let alone in the top of the first inning.
  6. Have to give some credit to the home plate ump. He probably could have called that himself but he checked with the 1B guy. Like to see that.
  7. I am sure over the entire season that if the pitching improves we will win more games. The offense has put up most of their numbers in only some of their games. No matter how good the pitching is, you are not going to win many games where you score 2 or fewer runs. I don't think the offense is poor but when it decides not to show up like has happened in one third of the games, it is difficult to win.
  8. The way I see it (and I'm not a metrics guy, but appreciate the value) is that if you take into account the players offense and defense to composite some type of overall metric (which I'm sure exists) you get the true value. They have something called WAR(wins above replacement) that does just that. Weeks can play a passable 2B, Braun was historically bad at 3B. What you want to do is move your players around to get the best defense out of them that you can. Braun might have stayed at 3B but we signed Cameron and it set off a domino effect Hall to 3B Braun to LF.
  9. The pitching hasn't been good but neither has the offense. There have been 10 games where the offense scored 2 or fewer runs and the team lost.
  10. If Gamel and Lawrie are in the same lineup does it really matter who plays 1B. Somebody has to and it probably won't be Fielder. You have your 8 guys and place them so you get the best defense possible.
  11. To be honest I think those faults of Randolphs and Yost's are more dependent on a poor bullpen than anything they did. There were many people who thought Yost was doing a very good job managing a bullpen at the start of 2008. Managers always look god when teams are winning. Hire a guy off the street for all I care. We watch a guy long enough he is going to suck. Macha was supposed to be some sort of really good 2nd half manager. Well he wasn't last year. His fault? Not really but he was the scapegoat, I mean manager.
  12. Randolph was a decent manager for the Mets. He was about the same as Yost. Sucked in the 2nd half and poor bullpen management.
  13. I don't know but I avoid women named Angie. Not really fair of me to say that since I am married though. If I was single Angie is a dirty word.
  14. Not really. They were expected to be a low 80's win team so a few good weeks and they are right there.
  15. I would keep anybody who can play SS there as long as possible unless there is a better option. I think behind Escobar our next guy is Josh Prince who was drafted just last year.
  16. I wasn't saying anything about a fielding metric... just that Weeks is not a good fielder. The first part of my response was just that some here have said Rickie is one of our better defensive players due to how good he was last year, but say it's too early to say if he's regressed. Neither sample is big enough to judge him.I wasn't responding to your post specifically. I will say Weeks is one of our best defenders but only because most of our other defenders are so poor. Fielder, Edmonds(in CF), Braun, Hart, McGehee, and Zaun are probaly about average at best and most likely below average. Even Escobar is probably below average until he gets more consistent. I think right now, he is about average. Gomez is the only above average defender we have and he doesn't play much. I thought our defense would be about average but I am thinking I overestimated our defense.
  17. Can't really argue with the lineup. Sucks to be Kottaras.
  18. Parra not in the rotation and tanking last year could possibly be laid at the feet of Macha as well. I wouldn't blame Macha for Parra tanking but it is definitely his choice to use him at the mop-up guy.
  19. This year's sample size is as big as last year's sample size. Weeks has a lot of balls hit at him that "miss his glove," so he doesn't get an error, but should make. Missed plays count against him in the advanced metrics. Nobody is talking about or using fielding percentage here.
  20. I think we should shift Escobar to the outfield instead of Weeks. Escobar is -1 plus minus and -10.8 UZR/150. It is WAY to early in the season to make anything out of defensive stats. If you had looked a little over a week ago, Weeks was around average in the field according to plus minus. To me this is just another scout coming in with certain expectations, seeing a few bad plays and saying "yup, just as I though, he sucks."
  21. 9/28/09 Amazing how things change over one offseason.
  22. True, but I think it was more of a situation like trading Overbay where he kind of had to go to make room for the rookie. I would have traded Escobar instead.
  23. I shouldnt have used the term cant miss pitcher. What I meant to say was when has Melvin ever acquired a young power arm with potential for the rotation other than JDLR? Even a guy like Morrow who is still struggling with Toronto would have been a guy worth taking a chance on. It cant always be Davis and Wolf and others that have no upside whatsoever. Give me a guy like Morrow and if he fails we can at least say Melvin took the chance on a guy with a power arm. I would rather fail on a guy with potential than paying millions for the likes of Davis. How do we know he didn't try? Why do we think Mark A. would find trading a good player for a high risk player and taking a possible step back acceptable?
  24. We're closer to needing a rebuild than we are to being a contender. I wouldn't trade for Oswalt this year but if we can get a nice return on Fielder we could contend by 2012 pretty easily. We really need one or two of our minor league pitchers to pan out of course and I don't' think most of those guys will be ready until 2012.
