  1. I would compare the team to a very bitter IPA. You really like it but it makes you wince. Edmonds/Miller Lite. Used to be good but once you are introduced to other beers you realize it just isn't very good.
  2. I don't know if it's ownership or Melvin. Hard to say really. IO believe Melvin is really working for his job year to year no matter what Mark A. says. I also get the impression Mark A. wants a winner on the field so he may not accept a rebuild anytime soon even if it would be in the best interest of the franchise long term. This trade deadline and upcoming offseason will be very telling. I just threw up a little in my mouth for talking about the offseason already.
  3. I am going to go ahead and Name Brad Mills my MVP for this game. He made the biggest plays by playing his infield in allowing us to get the tying run and left his closer out to dry when he had lost it in the 10th inning. If his infield had been playing at a decent depth I think there is a game ending DP instead of a single down the line for Gomez. I really wish our manager would quit playing the infield in to cut down the run at the plate. Others managers can do it against us though. 40+ pitches over 2 innings for your one inning guy, ouch. I think it is safe to say Mills can go in the same"poor manager" bucket with Macha.
  4. Hart probably should have and was platooned going into the season based on his performance over the previous 2 years. Not sure that it was based on spring results although it may have been. This is coming from a guy who has Hart as 1B favorite player(Weeks being 1A since he is playing better).
  5. We would probably have DFA's Cruz in 2008 as well if he had still been with us. We had a starting outfield of Braun, Cameron, Hart(coming off of a .295/.353/.5339/.892 year). I guess one could argue he would don't' go after Kapler if we have Cruz but I think we would still have gone after Kapler. Melvin seems to favor veteran bench players. I believe at the time I didn't like Cruz included in the deal.
  6. Or that the Rangers liked him and gave him a chance in the majors but he completely failed at the MLB level. They had him for a whole year and gave him 333 PA in 2007 when he put up a line of .235/.287/.384/.671. Look how far Gamel's star has fallen over the last year and he put up much better numbers than that last year for us.
  7. I don't think they are really similar hitters other than the fact both are not really good at hitting so far. Their current lines are .263/.298/.434/.732 and .244/.289/.385/.674 although Gomez only has a little over 100 PA so his stats will continue to jump all over the place for at least another month. Still to early to change my preseason opinion on either.
  8. Bolded portion should be emphasized. If the defense is playing for the bunt, you should almost never bunt. The defenders are in a bad position to field any decently hit ball.
  9. 1) agree, they signed Hoffman for to much before the market for closers was set. 2)I don't think a 2 year deal for under $4M per is going to hamstring the franchise so bad it keeps us from getting a player if we need to 3)Agree under. Somewhere in the 4.50-5.00 ERA range 4)Agree 5) Under in the 4.25-5.00 range provided he is healthy.
  10. 2nd in the league in runs scored and no I really don't care what the distribution of runs was. I don't think pitchers should ever bunt except maybe late in a game in a pitchers duel and even in that case I would probably opt for a pinch hitter.
  11. Except in some close and late situations, I also would prefer to make the bunt go away.
  12. Who is this Chris Naveson dude?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  13. It takes a long time to address a pitching situation and Melvin hasn't even started yet. This is where I think you are completely wrong. He has shifted to drafting more pitchers over the last couple years. We have several pitchers in the mid and low minors who might contribute by as early as next year. We have also not traded any players of much quality other than LaPorta over the last couple years either. You may not like that trade but it got us into the playoffs and if Sheets stays healthy we have a tremendous 1-2 punch in the rotation. I don't believe it's too much to ask that people widen their view and objectively look at the situation for what it is. I think you are wrong to call people as not being objective just because they have a differing view of how a franchise should be built up. We have already stated several times that some of us think Melvin did the right thing building a solid base on hitting before taking the next step. Melvin built the fan base back up so that we are not in the bottom of the league in salary year after year. We at the very least should hover around .500 and can have some good years when we bring up good prospects.
  14. Right, it isn't like the Brewers have completely ignored their MiLB problems with pitchers and drafting. They started to make a change 2 years ago and it is to soon to see if it will make a difference.
  15. I have changed from beer butt chicken to butterflying chickens as my preferred method for cooking whole chickens. I have also changed to Stubbs BBQ sauce.
  16. We really don't have much in the way of impact bats either. Lots of guys who should make a contribution but few impact bats.
  17. There was no room last year or this year to bring in an impact player via trade, because he has maxed out the payroll on Jason Kendall, Doug Davis, Jeff Suppan, Trevor Hoffman, etc. type players. Just last year the Brewers tried to acquire Doug Davis before the trade deadline. Not a big deal obviously but I think Davis instead of the dreck we ran out there would have made a huge impact.
  18. I almost always use fresh garlic when cooking. I occasionally use garlic salt.
  19. I don't think there were to many posters who actually thought we were a playoff team as built unless we got pretty lucky this year. I personally thought we were a 84 win team and would fall in the 79/89 win range. I have no problem with them spending $90M+ this year since most of the deals are 1-2 years long. I didn't like the Hoffman deal because they paid to much and signed him to quickly. None of the really bad deals are likely to hamstring the franchise after this year and it was in the team's best interest to try their best to get as many wins as possible to keep attendance up. That way when we have another group of good youngsters on the team in the next few years we can supplement them with good free agents. I would rather they spend the money than pocket it.
  20. That sounds pretty good but if I make it I would leave out the fennel seeds.
  21. Pretty close. We don't need them to be as good. He was lamenting long term hitting. We have pretty decent prospects for long term hitting.
  22. It has been brought up several times but not really discussed. I think he has bad fielding instincts. At least in the OF he has the opportunity to use his athleticism to make up for it. I think sometimes people get hung up on trying to get a good bat at certain positions(not necessarily saying you are) instead of putting everybody in the best defensive alignment possible. We are likely to have McGehee, Lawrie, Gamel and Braun all on the team at the same time. It really doesn't matter who plays where defensively as they will all be on the team. The best thing to do is put them in the combination that makes our defense best. I prefer Braun and his athleticism in LF. I didn't think he was a good fielder at 3B unlike Gamel for example who seems to field well but is not really good at throwing.
  23. If you find condescending tone, it must be how you read it. Maybe you are predisposed to find an alternate opinion as condescending? I pretty much felt much of that post was pretty condescending as well. I completely disagree with a lot of what TheCrew07 has to say much of the time and I don't find his posts condescending, just wrong.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif This is very troubling to me. What hitters do we have on this team that would be considered long term pieces? As far as I am concerned, Braun and McGehee look to be the only ones. Hart is inconsistent and, Fielder will be gone soon, Weeks is now batting below .240 (this year could end up being the 4th time in 6 seasons that he will have done this), and who really knows what we have with Gomez or Escobar at this point. If it is going to take 3 years before we have some legitimate starting pitching coming, I am afraid that we may not having enough hitting around to be competitive at that time. You mentioned Escobar and we also have Gamel, Lawrie, Lucroy and Cain to name a few off the top of my head. These guys should all be ready by 2011 at the latest. As for pitching, we should have some good arms coming up each of the next 2 years.
  24. I am looking to try a new recipe for pizza sauce. I have a simple one and it's ok but not great. Does anybody have any recommendations?
  25. Doug Melvin took over the Brewers in October 2002. Tampa Bay has been drafting and building their franchise since 1996. Doug is 8 years into his rebuilding. It took the Rays 12 years to reach a world series.
