  1. Suppan never made more than Sheets in any year Sheets was playing for us and the contract was only for $6M more over the duration including the buyout.
  2. He was on the verge of signing a contract with Texas but couldn't pass the physical before he missed the whole year. Some things to keep in mind with Tampa Bay is that they have been drafting since 1996. So in reality it took them 11 years to build up to where they are now.
  3. .220 .303 .390 .693 against LHP. .235 .316 .346 .662 against RHP Maybe these guys should be platooned as well. All but the top guys in the league have really ugly splits. Most players would benefit from being platooned.
  4. There are outliers though like Manny Parra specifically how carry a higher BABIP despite what his GB% and LD% show.
  5. Gamel will have 172 days of service time on about May 24th. Unless he was going to be called up today and optioned back down, he was likely to have a year regardless.
  6. Once again what does Melvin have to do with the draft? Seid makes all of the selections, just like Jack Z made all of the selections before him.So you are admitting it isn't Melvin's fault we didn't draft any pitchers for our system then. I could really care less what happens to Macha, they'll replace him and I'll just dislike a new guy probably~. Most fans will unless the guy wins a world series and probably will even then. In this economy you better put a compelling team on the field or the fanbase will just stop coming. That is true in any economy. We didn't exactly have great attendance until the last few years and I believe the economy was pretty decent in the couple years before that.
  7. Francisco was no longer closing and then Melvin compounded matters throwing in Cruz to get Nix. We probably had to add in Cruz along with Lee to get Cordero.
  8. I think you are probably right especially since I don't think Gallardo is a true #1. Another pitcher as good as Gallardo and the top of our rotation would look a lot better. There has been a definite shift in drafting over the last couple years. I think we will need a couple years to see if Melvin has made the right moves over the last few years. In any case, I think there is almost no way Melvin is fired before the draft.
  9. 100 things you didn't know about Star Wars. Well not really but close to 100.
  10. I don't think anybody would disagree with the concept of self fulfilling prophecy. The problem is we don't know the players' mindset at any given time.
  11. I will not be bothered by Lucroy only starting once in a while as long as he is only up for a couple weeks.
  12. I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but let me know how Prince does vs Maholm tonight. I predict an o-fer 0-4 with 4K's nor 5-5 with 5 HR would prove either one of us is correct. An 0-fer night is more likely not because Fielder is 3-37 but because it is a LHP vs LH bat matchup.
  13. Not saying it can't derail of course, but I am a firm believer in not paying a lot for closers. Somewhat unrelated but Capps is also doing pretty well as a closer this year as well.
  14. Doesn't look to be hurting them so far. One less good pitcher in the pen of course but the closer's spot is in much better shape than ours.
  15. Hitter vs pitcher matchups are trivia not predictive. Platoon advantage matters more. Flip Hart and Escobar and I like the lineup. Other than Stern in there of course.
  16. In 2006 the rotation was Sheets and a bunch of pitchability guys, in 2010 the rotation is Gallardo and a bunch of pitchability guys, I don't see the difference at all. Sheets was head and shoulders better than Gallardo. He was a stopper in the rotation, Gallardo is just a good pitcher. This pitching staff is not as bad as they have shown so far. I think everybody is being way to negative about it. Understandable to some extent, but we are not going 65-97 on the season baring multiple injuries.
  17. Wouldn't having an extremely high HR/9 also significantly increase BABIP without any sort of luck factored in? No, HR are not counted in BABIP and flyballs are turned into out at a pretty high rate. If we were giving up a lot of linedrives I would see our BABIP being pretty high. It really is just some bad luck to go along with a bad defense. Link NUMBER OUTS OUT% Groundballs 9952 7208 72% Flyballs 7845 6179 79% Line Drives 4082 1050 26% Total 21879 14437 66%
  18. That would only be 16 wins. I find that very hard to believe. If we had a decent closer we would be at almost .500 right now. At least 18-22. The only really bad thing this year is that Hoffman fell off a cliff so far and since he is a Hall of Famer we really can't pull him.
  19. I would give Melvin 2 more years personally. He has already changed the focus in the minors to pitching. If he can trade Fielder for a reasonably good pitcher and at least one or two of the current pitchers in the minors actually pan out we will have some decent pitching without spending much on FA pitching. I absolutely think Melvin built the Brewers the right way. He got us in a position to be around 80 wins every year unless things really go bad. Drafting hitting is safer than drafting pitching. While focusing on pitching is the better idea for peaking much higher, we could be the Pirates right now. 17 straight losing seasons. Sure it was the safe way to build the franchise. Now we have a good talent base and need to take the next step. I see Melvin making moves in the right direction so far. If he signs Fielder or doesn't trade him for a decent pitcher, I will change my mind. It is way to early to look at this season and call it a complete failure. I thought we were around 84 and 5 either way wouldn't be surprising. Right now we are on the low end with many players being a huge disappointment so far.
  20. How many balls has Escobar hit out of the infield this year so far?
  21. Quite a few if we trade him for a player that will help us win. People will not show up for a losing team whether Fielder is here or not. I wouldn't trade anybody unless we are going to get a good player in return until at least mid-June. That way we won't be giving players extra service time. I would put Fielder and any player who will be a free agent after this season on the block. I wouldn't trade a player unless we get a good return though. Really who can we trade other than Fielder who is likely to actually bring back a decent player? Hart maybe? Other than Hart and Fielder most of our guys are back next year or at best bench players.
