  1. I don't know about everybody else but I suggested Hart #2 as part of a platoon with Edmonds.
  2. Not sure what's reasonably attainable for you, but I know I've seen the Lindeman's Cuvee Rene around the La Crosse and Milwaukee areas and I think that Goose Island's Juliet has made its way into WI as well. Woodman's in Madison has Lindeman's. They also have Goose Island's Juliet, although I think the Pere Jaques is better.
  3. If Hoffman was younger and had options I have to believe he would have already been sent down.
  4. I don't think Hart is as good as he is hitting right now. He is a good solid player but if we could trade him for a solid, high upside AA or higher arm I would do it. Somebody who could possibly help next year. I doubt we could get that much though. I don't think Hart is part of the long term plans. If he played good defense or we could move him to LF I wouldn't mind keeping him. At least for next year. We don't exactly have any outfield guys banging on the door right now unless we move Gamel there and keep Fielder.
  5. I don't believe this really belongs in this thread. It is a blown call not a case of an umpire with an overinflated ego. Joyce wasn't aggressive and didn't escalate the situation. He made what is obviously a mistake. It would be great to have replay for situations like this but it didn't cost the Tigers the game.
  6. That bat died happy. Can't believe Bill didn't say it. Edit: There it is.
  7. Honestly I think we would all like to know.
  8. Here are some links from the end of March. Fangraphs Googledoc sheet
  9. A good basestealer 6 makes some sense. Once you get that far down the order leveraging speed can help. You just don't want guys with low OBP in front of your best hitters. One or 2 spots in the order isn't really a big deal. Putting a guy #2 when he is one of your 2-3 worst hitters and should be #6 or lower is just bad.
  10. It wouldn't be logical to try improving your team from 83 to 85-86 wins because that still probably doesn't get you into the playoffs. 2 wins over half a season is about all you would get for improving any one position because if we were at 27 wins that probably means Hoffman, Wolf, Davis, Fielder, Hawkins and the rest of our drastically under performing players are performing well.
  11. I don't see much false hope around the 3 Brewer sites I visit the most anymore. That is because fans in general are highly emotional and the brewers are having a bad year. If we were 27 - 26(about a 83ish win pace) fans would be talking about acquiring a player at the deadline to get us into the playoffs since we would only be 3 games back in the wild card and 4 in the division. Melvin traded his one shot to acquire a pitcher of significant talent without having to give up a MLB piece for a rental player, the emotional response to a playoff appearance aside, was that one appearance worth losing the nest 2 years and maybe 3? Yes it was. There are not guarantees we could have traded for anything other than a rental for LaPorta and the other guys we traded.
  12. We aren't anywhere near late enough in the season to rule out small sample sizes. Looking at the past 3 years still tells more about a player than anything he has done this year. Having said that I think there is probably a systemic issue at play given how many BBs the team has given up. Every new pitcher we have seems to increase their BB when they come to the team as well. Jeff Suppan is the only pitcher on the entire brewer team that has a BB/9 under 3.5, that is just crazy. It might be an issue caused by the poor defense, it might be a game planning issue. I don't know. It is to early to quit saying small sample but even if we played to our talent we are probably only a little better than a .500 team so we have dug a whole to big for ourselves already. Best case scenario is probably low 80's in wins and that would take some luck.
  13. BP shows 716 OPS in the NL, 677 AL thus far in '10. LY was 721 in both leagues. He is close to the AL OPS but it is a relatively SLG heavy OPS. Hardy only made 10 errors his rookie season with a range factor of 3.76 per 9 innings. Escobar's number this season is 4.52. That is a really misleading stat. Escobar could be playing behind pitchers who put the ball in play more or more groundballs. Range factor is just putouts/innings at a defensive position.
  14. Summer is actually a time when I am less likely to try new beer. I only have a limited time to drink as much Oberon Ale and Dancing Man Wheat as possible. I like the Moon Man as well. I really have not come across anything interesting lately. I tried Flying Dog Brewery's Belgian IPA. I liked that although I have no idea what the heck a Belgium IPA is supposed to be. I am going on the New Glarus paid brewery tour on June 18th. We originally were going to stop at the Grumpy Troll in Mt Horeb on the way back but decided we didn't want to drink to much while driving.
  15. Low .700's OPS sure, but his OBP sucks even for an average SS. They at least put up a .325 OBP. At this point Escobar is barely cracking .300.
  16. There seems to be a lack of understanding of how bad the average SS is offensively, they average a sub 700 OPS. No they don't. The average MLB SS last year put up a .328/.394/.721 line. Escobar is a substandard SS on both offense and defense at this point.
  17. How do you figure Escobar is average? His offense this year is .250/.303/.378/.681 and his defense is about average at best so far. The average NL SS is .272/.331/.385/.716.
  18. I don't think I claimed errors are a great way to measure defense, but I thought the more advanced metrics need a full season or two to be conclusive. I would agree that his range doesn't seem to be spectacular yet. If he was getting to a million balls and making specatcular plays I'd cut him some slack on the errors. I haven't seen that yet. 3 years actually and you still need to regress it. He does have spectacular range. We saw it a few times last year. The difference is that the few extra balls he gets to that Hardy couldn't don't offset the balls both can get to that Hardy makes plays on that Escobar doesn't.
  19. What data? UZR is pretty much of a morphing crapshoot. For whatever reason you hear people talk about needing 3 years worth of data, but it used to be you needed a career's worth of data and it still might not be accurate. You need 3 years data and need to regress it halfway. So if a guy is -10 UZR/150 over 3 years you would assume -5UZR/150 going forward. Most of Escobar's errors are of the throwing variety as well, it is it a tough sell to believe he could be an above average defender? This statement is a little confusing. I think he can be a great defender. He isn't now but he has all the tools. With regard to McGehee moving over to 1st, I don't think he'll hit well enough to be anything more than average there. Doesn't matter. We are more than likely going to have Lawrie, Gamel and McGehee all in our order at the same time. Just because a guy can or cannot hit like a 1B doesn't matter really. We need to put those guys in the configuration that is likely to get the best defense on the field.
  20. It took them a little over two months to finally send Gamel back to the minors instead of sitting him on the bench most of the time. 67 days to be exact. Now Gamel has one full year of service time.
  21. Hopefully Edmonds and Macha realize Edmonds is really old and can't play more than a couple days a week without pulling something.
  22. Errors are a poor way to measure defense. Of course Escobar doesn't measure up well on either Dewan's plus/minus(0) or UZR either(-3.2 UZR/150). I guess he is about where I expected actually. About average. I didn't want to start this thread because I was waiting until much later in the season. We will see how good he is but I thin scouts were way to impressed with his potential instead of actually grading him on what he was. He definitely has the potential to be a fantastic defender if he can become consistent. When will he become consistent is really the big question.
  23. At this point I would play Hart all but 1-2 games a week. I would put him in a straight up platoon with Edmonds if Edmonds wasn't and old fart who got injured when the wind blew the wrong way. Nah just kidding. Really though I think Edmonds can't handle more than 3 starts a week without breaking down.
