  1. You are right we probably have had more balls in play than most teams. The other teams may have had easier balls to field though. That is what I should have originally said. The teams we are playing right now are "hitting them where we ain't." I would think by the end of the season we settle in somewhere a little below average.
  2. Hey after Kottaras of the .250/.410/.571 line was moved down to 8th you can never be too sure That is really confusing considering how Macha likes to play the hot hand. I still think a Edmonds/Hart platoon would outhit our catchers over the course of the year.
  3. Gomez has had sporadic playing time and Escobar has been to inconsistent to be above average so far. To expand on what Ender mentioned, the Brewers may not have had as many balls they could field as other teams. .
  4. I think Hart/Edmonds is a better hitting platoon than Zaun/Kottaras.
  5. Macha cautioned about being too aggressive before the game, saying the hitters had to make sure they forced the opposing pitcher to throw the ball in the strike zone before they pulled the trigger. They really are not saying two different things. Macha just seems to be saying he wants them to be aggressive in the zone.
  6. I guess I was right yesterday, #2 is the CF spot in the order.
  7. Maybe Weeks can step up on the hitting side but with the pitching expeced to be weak for a few years the hitting really has to be above average. Our hitting has and probably will continue to be above average for a while even when Fielder leaves. There is a lot of room to upgrade on the pitching side however.
  8. On May 24th or there about Gamel will have 172 days of service time, one year.
  9. The triple was a bit fluky. Most triples are. Most involve a bad bounce off the wall away from an outfielder.
  10. and to be honest you probably shouldn't. Defensive stats will not tell you anything very useful at this point. Nothing predictive I should say. One or two bad plays can really skew things at this point in the season. I agree that Weeks looks much better than he has in years past. I think he has a bad defense label still strapped to him from when he came up and every bad play he makes just reinforces it with some people.
  11. So I would like an explanation as to why Gomez, who is a below average hitter and doesn't have the platoon advantage, is batting #2 and Edmonds who may not be average but at least has a platoon advantage going for him is #6. Let's see just how creative we can be. I am going to go with Macha likes more outs in front of Braun and Fielder so they can try to win games by only hitting solo homeruns. Edmonds lost the wrestle off. The CF hits #2, except when we have a gritty veteran like CC to hit #2. Macha thought we were scoring to many runs in the top of the lineup and didn't want the guys at the bottom getting jealous.
  12. I would have guessed at the bar on his Blackberry while ordering another drink.
  13. I think our 2012(not sure if Gamel or Lawrie will be with the Brewers before then) lineup will be Lawrie, Gamel, McGehee, Escobar, Salome/Lucroy, Braun, 2B(hopefully Weeks), and CF(Gomez/Cain/Schafer). Lawrie may be the only one with an "average 1B bat" other than Braun, that doesn't mean we should put him there. We take those guys and put them in the positions that makes our defense best. It doesn't matter to me if a guy can hit enough to play a position or not.
  14. Nah, that was just random variance.
  15. A .760 OPS is well below average for a 1B which is where he is mentioned as a future replacement for Prince. Like I said though, I think Gamel can easily surpass the .760 OPS he put up last year. He put that up and people thought he was hitting poorly. If he can hit for even a .800 OPS and play above average defense(which I think is a reasonable expectation for Gamel) he is a better than average 1B. Gamel's poor fielding is mostly throwing related from what I saw and have read about and he wouldn't have to do that much at 1B. Really it doesn't matter if he can put up average 1B stats. He will be on the field with McGehee, Lawrie and Braun. Putting them in the best defensive alignment is what is really important. To me, that means Braun in LF since I think he has bad baseball instincts and didn't field ground balls well. The other guys shuffle around as best suits our needs. Gamel or Lawrie at 1B, 3B or Rf doesn't really matter to me much. Neither does whether they can hit like an average player for that position, although I think either could be above average for a 1B if you include defense.
  16. If all these guys who are depth can be average MLB players we are in good shape. All you need is a team of average guys with a couple guys who are stars to have a pretty good team. The problem is that most of our depth probably will not be average at the MLB level. Lawrie is a man without a position for now it seems, he may be destined for the OF but will his bat play in a corner spot? That seems to be my question, will Gamel/Lawrie hit enough to be average for a 1B and corner OF'er? These are the two biggest bats in the minors and may end up being below average in the majors for their eventual positions. I don't think the average corner outfielder hits as well as you think. Neither do 1B. If either can play above average defense they will pretty easily be above average for either position. Gamel put up a .338/.422/.760 line and generally was considered to have not hit well for the Brewers. I think he can hit better than that pretty easily. LF .343/.439/.782 RF .339/.442/.792 1B .363/.483/.846
  17. It would be fantastic if our manager would put Gomez in the lower half of the order and leave him there.
  18. Yes they are better and no it isn't his fault our manager keeps putting him #2. I would like to point his OBP for this year which is "good" for Gomez he still has a worse OBP than Hart had in any year other than 2008. Gomez isn't really in a slump. He has poor plate discipline and if that ever improves he can easily be a 4+WAR player. Weeks could probably use a day off at least every other week. I think all middle infielders could. He also didn't play much of last year. In summation I pick Weeks.
  19. Carlos Gomez isn't slumping. He just isn't very good.
  20. I wouldn't put Braun at 1B because he is bad at fielding ground balls. Gamel's problems in the field are mostly throwing related. Moving him to 1B would eliminate most of the need for him throwing. If Gamel can stick at 3B I would move McGehee over to 1B.
  21. We got almost an entire infield for a year and 2 guys for more than a year for Sexson and that is before looking at the pitchers. All the guys we got were cheap and bridged the gap to our MiLB talent.
  22. I am not so sure about that. It is questionable whether Lawrie can or has the desire to stick at 2B. My guess is Lawrie might be ready part way through midseason next year at the earliest but more likely 2012 and maybe not at 2B. The only reason to entertain trading Fielder is because we have virtually zero chance of resigning him after next year. We really don't have a ready replacement for either but it is much easier to find a bat to plug in at 1B than it is at 2B. Like I mentioned above, Lawrie is our next 2B in the system and he might end up at another position. After Lawrie things are pretty thin.
  23. It was questionable if Nelson Cruz would ever amount to anything and it took him one and a half years after we traded him for him to amount to anything at the MLB level including being passed through waivers at the end of spring training in 2008. They leave out that Lee was traded. At the time of the trade it may not have look very good to trade Cruz but he was somewhat redundant.
  24. Weeks also needs to snap out of whatever funk he's in and start getting on base again. Not sure Weeks is the one I would call out. There are only 5 games all year he didn't get on base.(three in the last couple weeks but he still has a .374 OBP) I would be more worried about the .265/.314/.442 line we are getting out of our #2 hitters this year. Flip them with our #6 hitters who are .276/.339/.459 and things look much better.
