  1. I don't think Braun reads the ball well either. He is frequently turning the wrong way even after 2 years in LF. Some guys have good baseball instincts and some don't. I don't believe Braun does. Hall was playing pretty well in CF by the end of his only season out there. I think Gamel has good instincts and would make the transition pretty well. By most accounts his problem is throwing, not actually fielding.
  2. I think you are underestimating Brenden Ryan.
  3. Half the funny stuff is watching Shawn and Gus react nonverbaly to each other. Gus used to make funny faces, but now he just goes along with it. Hit the Jackal switch.
  4. I don't think rookie cards are very valuable anymore. You almost need something autographed or with a piece of game use memorabilia. What would look nice though is one of the Allen and Ginter cards.
  5. What, no fans of Psych? Love that show along with Burn Notice and White Collar.
  6. I can't believe the crap people watch. Crime dramas and reality TV. 2 genres I don't like.
  7. You mean like Kevin Mench?
  8. Defense is probably a wash or a little worse.
  9. Hard to say. Lopez has been a poor defender over his career. Weeks hasn't been good either. Probably a wash unless Weeks gets better.
  10. Average SS 2009 AL 0.274/0.329/0.391/0.720 NL 0.268/0.327/0.396/0.723 MLB 0.271/0.328/0.394/0.721 Averge CF 2009 AL 0.265/0.330/0.404/0.734 NL 0.268/0.339/0.424/0.763 MLB 0.267/0.335/0.414/0.749
  11. He thought things were wrong at the end of the season. I get the feeling Melvin gives his manager lots of latitude. Hopefully we don't see Gamel sitting the bench again this year.
  12. Macha is still in charge of the team on a daily basis and I have little faith in Macha. I think Suppan is probably better than Vargas, but not much. If I see Suppan in the rotation I will be very disappointed.
  13. Hopefully this gets Suppan out of the rotation. I have a bad feeling that won't be the case. I think we should hold onto Suppan till mid-season and see how our guys in AAA do. If they do well, dump him and get a better reliever. We wouldn't need him fror SP depth if the guys in AAA step up.
  14. Then wouldn't Felix have used Sabathia's deal as a basis for his extension? Boras isn't his agent.
  15. Most of the article makes things look pretty bleak in regards to resigning Fielder. Link
  16. Cameron in April: 20 G .333/.430/.667 Rest of season: 129 G .237/.328/.419 Not exactly a black hole still better than Gomez's career marks but nothing special. If you look further into the splits you could just as easily say Cameron was fantastic except for June. I don't think it makes any sense to selectively include some months and not others.
  17. yes, cameron - after his fast start he was a "black hole" for much of the season You are wrong. check the splits.
  18. I think whether we make the playoffs depends a lot on Escobar and Gomez. Does Gomez continue to be the black hole he has been to this point or does he hit his CHONE projection(.329/.390/.719)? Not real great but still worlds better than his career numbers. If Escobar and Gomez can both put up an OPS in the .700 range with an OBP north of .320, our offense shouldn't take to much of a hit. Our pitching is better than we had going into 2009. We are still probably in the low 80's range for wins, but if things go our way we could easily win in the high 80's. Still might not be enough to make the playoffs though.
  19. I would say Hardy is a slightly above average SS. I would say you are selling JJ a little short by calling him slightly above average. He does well in any metric you look at. Not elite, which I think Escobar has the tools to become, but still well above average. I don't think Escobar will be better than JJ by the end of this season. I don't believe that there is much of a learning curve playing defense in the minors compared to the majors. Somewhat of a tangent question, but if JJ was playing back to gain more range, why wouldn't Escobar play back as well? He gets the same range by playing up but I think he would get to more balls playing back leting the 3B play on the line a little more and getting to more balls up the middle.
  20. The only really bad decision that can be made with the rotation at this point is putting Suppan in the rotation on opening day without an injury to one of our other starters. I have no faith in Macha keeping Suppan out of the rotation. Gallardo, Davis and Wolf are probably guaranteed to be in the rotation. Bush should as well unless, like mentioned earlier, he shows a loss of velocity or can't locate. I would prefer Parra in there as well unless he walks the world in Spring Training. Suppan is next if somebody gets hurt.
  21. The guy they have playing CF over in Seattle is a pretty good CF. Escobar has to improve to be the best defensive SS in baseball. He has the talent, but he isn't there yet. Our defense improved minimally if at all with the addition of Gomez and Escobar. Hardy and Cameron were very good defensively. With the SS position, Hardy was very good, Escobar shouldn't be counted on for being that good yet.
  22. Well at least he can pay the paperboy with that $2.
  23. Cameron was top 10 on offense, top 5 overall.
  24. Really good defense. That is the value of Gomez. He is young so there is hope that he will improve his hitting, but most of his value is his defense.
