  1. That at bat means that Gamel is no longer eligible for rookie of the year consideration in the future.
  2. That should ensure Escobar's rookie status for next year. That double reminds me I have to get a hold of FTJ and get my case of beer.
  3. Suppan starting reminds me of the game Favre started at the end of a season and only played a few downs just to keep his streak alive.
  4. I graduated with a girl who pronounced her name Jo-el.
  5. St. Louis has a TV market a third bigger than Milwaukee. The greater St. Louis area has a population of 2.8 million. Milwaukee and the surrounding area 1.7 million. It has little to do with marketing and more to do with just being a bigger market. They are going to pull in more fans if they stick around .500 or better, just like Milwaukee. Their attendance in 2002 when they won 95 games barely cracked 3 million.(3, 011,756) If Milwaukee had sustained success, the promise of being in the playoff hunt most years, they would draw over 3 million easy. In fact I would say St. Louis draws worse than Milwaukee given their population advantage.
  6. I don't like Macha. He has such a blah personality. He has annoyed me with his approach to the running game, sac bunting and IBB. However, I hardly think our record this season is his fault or hiring a different guy for next year is going to make a difference. It would be a good PR move to pawn off this bad year on Macha, nothing more.
  7. Al continues to live in the past and assumes we have a bottom feeder payroll. In a few years he might realize we drew 3 million fans in 2009 We are not likely to have a bottom feeder payroll in the near future, but I wouldn't be surprised if it dips next year. I doubt we draw 3 million fans next year. I am not sure Brantley would play next year. I think they will try and retain Cameron and failing that Gerut will probably start in CF. I think Melvin will see us as being only a good starting pitcher or two away from being a high 80's win team next year and will go with what he thinks is more guaranteed production and a veteran team instead of a lot of youngsters.
  8. OBP is about 10% higher...that's very close 41 points of OBP is huge, not close. those who feel he'll never hit fail to take into consideration the normal development curve of a young middle infielder. Who has ever said that? All I have ever read was that people think he will not hit now and would be much better in a few years.
  9. Wow, that is some pretty generous scoring. I count 2 errors that inning.
  10. It just amazes me how many people still defend Suppan. Must be because he seems like such a good dude off the field or something. The alternatives are worse. I doubt anybody is happy with Suppan, especially given his contract.
  11. An average NL CF put up a line of .268/.339/.423/.762. Cameron's .250/.344/.458/.802 looks above average to me.
  12. Bush was serving up too many gopher balls to the point where he was putting up average numbers. Bush had a 4.58 ERA at that point. That isn't bad for a MLB starter. I couldn't overlook Parra's dreadful August and September 2008 and say, he will figure it out again fully to the point of putting up Ted Lilly '08 numbers. I think people would have settled for Parra's numbers from 2008. His September and August could easily have been from extending his innings to far past his previous high. He hit a wall and almost exactly when many people thought he would. There really was little reason to expect him to be this bad given his previous performance.
  13. Parra's rise of 2 runs in ERA alone accounts for 4 fewer wins.
  14. A salary cap would kill a lot of what makes baseball fun. It would end midseason trades for the most part. Instead of trading players for prospects, we would get a bunch of unexciting contract trading. Tweak the revenue sharing, make all players go through the draft to play in MLB, slot the draft and tweak the compensation for free agents. I know fans think keeping their own players is important, but the way players develop makes it harder to turn around a team quickly through the draft.
  15. Even if his defense was Cesar Izturis good, there's no way it can make up for that crappy performance on offense. Izturis was only a run better on defense measured by UZR/150 than Hardy.(6.9-7.9)
  16. We still wouldn't be able to keep all of Gallardo, Braun and Fielder. All it would take is one team to beat our offer for a player to leave for more money. Milwaukee is probably one of the most backwater cities in MLB. We would still have to pay more for players than many other cities. Even if we were able to keep all of our players, our pitching would still stink this year.
  17. I don't think Braun would even sign that contract with us if not for the current system. I think he would leave as soon as he could for an LA team. He wouldn't have had to wait 6 years to hit free agency in the NFL's system. He could have had a really good year or two and left. The only reason to take a contract like that is because the pre-arby years in baseball are so cheap for teams. And I don't understand your comment about how players would end up with the Yankees anyway even if MLB had a system like football. Do all the great NFL players end up with the NY Giants? It isn't about the city. It's about being a prestige franchise. The Yankees are one of those franchises. Danzig make it outr to be all about the money. There are other factors involved.
  18. What are you talking about here? It's not exactly a CIA classified secret about how long teams can control a player along with compensation picks for losing free agents. No it isn't classified, but it isn't exactly common knowledge either. How often have you read posts about fans worried about losing Fielder after 2010 because they don't realize he still has an arbitration year. We never would have had CC if the current system wasn't how it is. How many of our current players would we realistically want to keep when they become free agents. Braun, Fielder and Gallardo. The rest are very replaceable. I think fans get to attached to players. I don't know why anybody worries about players leaving. If baseball had a system like the NFL, Fielder would have Rosenhaus as his agent and would be looking for the biggest contract he could get. We wouldn't likely have him anyway. The Yankees would get the players no matter what.
  19. Who have we lost recently that we wanted to keep? Sabathia and I wouldn't want him for the contract he was given. Even with the money being equal there is always the draw of playing in a bigger city and there would be prestige franchises.
  20. With the Brewers though, we've been talking about when Fielder will need to be traded nearly since the day he proved to be an immense talent. That is because the assumption was he would be such a terrible fielder, he would have to be moved to DH within a couple years. Before Braun took that below market deal, fans were wondering by his second year in the league only if we'd have to trade him in a few years. Many fans don't realize how long teams have control of players before they can be free agents either. They also don't realize teams recieve compensation picks for losing free agents. Just imagine if Braun hadn't chose to take that 6 year deal, we'd all be terrified that it was likely a matter of when he'd need to be traded. It's ridiculous and so frustrating. Except for a select few top flight players, FA players are marginally better and much more expensive than bringing up prospects. I don't think most fans realize that by the time players hit free agency, most are past their prime or at the end of their prime years. Those long term deals seem nice when a player is signed, but more often than not once a player hits the last few years of the contract, they could easily be replaced by a younger player. I wish they would tweak the compensation a bit and improve the revenue sharing, but for the most part all the current system does is prevent us from wasting a lot of money.
  21. I guess that will pretty much seal my bet with FTJ.
  22. I won't quibble with your pitcher grades, but I will grade the guys after the season is over and see how my grades turn out compared to your grades.
  23. Does Macha talk to anybody or does he just sit in his office and wait for people to come to him? What was the discussion when Gamel cvame up? "Hey Ken we're gonna bring up our top prospect so he can start at 3B." "Thanks Doug, but I don't want to be put in a zim-zam." "Well, we are going to bring him up anyway. I think he should get regular play time. Maybe rest McGehee cause he knee hurts, and that." "I'll see what I can do." click It really sounds like management and Macha had different ideas when Gamel was brought up. If anything Melvin and Macha seem to not be on the same page.
  24. Ken Macha -- D-. Would have been a D+, but he had Corey Patterson bat leadoff. I don't care that it was only for one game, that's not excuseable. It was 2 games back to back. I think you should drop your grade even lower because of that.
  25. That is over in the competitive balance thread.
