  1. I don't think either McGehee or Gamel have gotten enough starts in MLB this season to really determine how good or bad either of them are defensively. I think both have shown they can at least be adequate. I have to agree with that. McGehee was a better defender in the minors than Gamel has been. Gamel looks more athletic to me though. Personally I think it is a case of one guy having a bad reputation as a defender. That can be very hard to shake. Just ask Rickie. Can we get any information about McGehee's defense in the minors? Like TheCrew mentioned, we have Total Zone for minor league players. It shows McGehee as average.
  2. he strikes out way too much for my tastes. Not a big deal Going further, he has driven in 12 runs since the 4th of July. Not a big deal either. RBI is a terrible stats to judge anything. In my opinion, he is not worth anywhere near $10 million a year, and the only way that I'd take him back is at a significant pay cut. All I can say to that is I totally disagree with your way of evaluating players. Cameron has the 6th best wOBA and is 7th best in UZR/150 among CF this year. Bourn and Kemp are the only players to rank higher in both.
  3. I know I know. All I post about is New Glarus beer lately. They have a new Unplugged beer out now. Old English Porter. Haven't picked it up yet. I will let you know how it is when I do. More accurately, I will post my wife's response. And the depressing news that D-Man is gone for another year. Buy it up while you can. I ran across this looking around the New Glarus website. Vote for what style you want to see next year. Link Vote for the specific beers you want to see in 2010. Link
  4. The whole quote wasn't necessary, but instead of continuing off topic I will post a response here. Use wOBA. It takes SB and SC into account. Graphing SC compared to runs scored shows up pretty much like strikeouts vs runs scored on a team level. It looks like a shotgun. Of course SB baserunning is very important, but nowhere near as important as OBP. Not making outs is the single most important thing when trying to score runs. After that is getting as many bases as possible when getting a hit. Very very distant after that is stealing bases. Yes one short coming of OBP is it doesn't differentiate between a HBP or a HR that's why people use things like OPS. If you use wOBA it can easily be converted to runs by taking a player's wOBA and subtracting the league average wOBA(usually around .335) then dividing by 1.15 and then multiplying it by a player's PA. For example Corporan .892 wOBA in 1 PA (.892-.335)/1.15 * 1 = 0.48 runs Fielder .421 wOBA in 529 PA (.421-.335)/1.15 * 529 = 39.56 runs McGehee .365 wOBA in 242 PA (.365-.335)/1.15 * 242 = 6.31 runs Cameron .352 wOBA in 476 PA (.352-.335)/1.15 * 476 = 7.04 runs Nobody has ever said speed doesn't have value. Only that speed has very limited value. one of the shortcomings of OBP is that a walk or HBP with 1B open doesn't advance any runners, and runners can only advance one base on a walk or HB, and with nobody on base a BB or HBP are exactly the same as a single. The bases have been empty 54% of the time when a Brewer came to bat. An infield hit doesn't advance runners either.
  5. Wow, really? Cameron has been our 3rd best hitter this year.(I exclude part time players) An .808 OPS is nothing to scoff at especially with good defense in CF.
  6. It would really suck to have Coffey as a closer. He can go multiple innings.
  7. "Is that Kentucky Bluegrass?" I think that one went right over Rock's head.
  8. OPS correlates very well on a team level with runs scored. This is from the 2008 season. Click on Sheet1, Strikeouts, Walks, etc. to look at them graphed. Link Brawndo mentions linear weights. One easy to find is wOBA over at Fangraphs. It takes SB into account.
  9. I am pretty one would need more than 22 at bats to judge a player.I definitely agree with that. What I find more troubling is that Escobar has hit into more DP this year than Jason Kendall. I won't really make any judgement on Escobar until at least mid season next year though. If we can get a good trade for Hardy, I would do it. I wouldn't be all that upset with Escobar in AAA next year either though. I doubt we are going far next year and would rather save Escobar's service time for later in his career when he is better.
  10. Suppan is probably relied upon to be a #4 for us at best. I really doubt anybody thinks he is better than Parra or Bush.
  11. I have to agree that winning managers are smarter than losing managers. They were smart enough to take a job with a good team.
  12. I think a replacement player is generally thought to be somebody who would produce at a level 75% of an average player. Usually with average defense.
  13. Parra should be fine. He went 166 last year. He should be good for 186-196 easy.
  14. Parra and Bush should not be expected to be 5+ ERA pitchers. They underperformed badly this year. Bush's ERA inflated after being hit by a line drive. A starting rotation of Gallardo, Parra, Bush, Suppan and Looper is solid if unspectacular if they stay healthy. It would keep us in the division race. When one guy underperforms and there is nothing to do but hope he gets better is when things start to go bad. Our record looks pretty good until the end of June when Bush and Suppan went down. If we had even replacement level 6th - 8th starters, we would be at least hanging around .500.
  15. We would have been able to put in a decent replacement for Parra earlier in the season. Putting in a decent pitcher for Bush would have also made a difference. We could have pulled him a couple games sooner. We really left both of those guys out there much longer than we would have if our AAA pitching was good at all.
  16. The thing that really hurt us wasn't our starting pitching as much as our lack of anybody behind those top 5 guys.
  17. I sort of doubt Riske pitches for us until late next year. He just had TJ surgery in June.
  18. Prince usually sits in the .290-.300 range for BABIP though. Individual players will hit will usually hit close to their career BABIP.
  19. What do you mean Logan.....that he has an attitude problem that will cause him to stall and never reach the majors, or that he'll wear out his welcome in the organization and be shipped away in a trade? Or am I way off? I got the impression he wasn't well liked by his teammates and the organization was somewhat unhappy with his attitude. I could be wrong though. He is still very young with plenty of time to mature.
  20. Not sure why anybody would think things would change just because we changed pitching coaches. Our pitchers are still not good.
  21. To be honest, I am very surprised we got anything at all for Hall. Teams could have just waited a few more days and signed him for nothing.
  22. After talking to some people at the T-Rats game the other night, I have to say that it wouldn't be surprising if Lawrie never plays a game for the Brewers. I got the impression he wasn't very well liked in Appleton.
  23. *sigh* I was going to predict a 3-2 or 2-1 loss tonight. This season has been going down the wrong track for a while, but now it has completely derailed. The only thing to keep track of now is the progress of guys like Escobar and my bet with FTJ. At what point does Yovanni get a new nickname. Ben Gallardo, Yovanni Sheets, or little Ben. These losses like this with our ace on the mound were annoying in 2004-5006, but now they just make me sick to my stomach. Letting Gallardo go 110+ pitches in 6 innings is wrong. He is very important and I think at this point there needs to be a major change in managing philosophy. Not that I didn't think there needed to be one before, but I don't think winning should be the number one priority anymore.
  24. I really hope this isn't another start where Gallardo only gives up 2 runs over 7 innings and still takes a loss.
