  1. DFA Riske Why? We have to pay him either way and it isn't like he taking up roster space while on the DL.
  2. I felt shortly after or around book 6 Jordan stopped progressing his main characters and instead spent the next several books introducing new characters to the point where you didn't even have more than a couple pages on the main characters if you were lucky. The series is going to be completed by Brandon Sanderson. He was picked by Jordan's widow to write the final book which got split into 3 books. Jordan knew he was going to die and made notes about how he wanted the book to end. He contracted a disease of some sort.
  3. Are you looking at career save percentage? That may be somewhat misleading since relievers often start as middle relievers where they can easily pick up a blown save, but have virtually no chance of picking up a save.
  4. Have you read the Silmarillion by Tolkien? It goes through the whole history of Middle Earth from creation. If you really like Tolkien it might be worth a read. I forgot about the Dragon Riders of Pern series. Good series. My wife even liked the The Farseer Trilogy and she really doesn't read much fantasy. I on the other hand read almost exclusively fantasy books. Dune would be my top recommendation. It really is good. Start with "Dune" and if you like that follow the Dune original series first. Dune Messiah Children of Dune God Emperor of Dune Heretics of Dune Chapterhouse Dune go to the Legends of Dune Series The Butlerian Jihad The Machine Crusade The Battle of Corrin go to the prelude books House Atreides House Harkonnen House Corrino then finish the original series Hunters of Dune Sandworms of Dune I know it is a lot of books, but you can read only the first and and be left without cliff hangers. You can read up until the end of Heritics of dune stopping at any book and not have any cliffhangers. The cliffhangers start at Chapterhouse Dune.
  5. We had to make the decision on Cameron within a couple weeks of the end of the season I believe. We had to decide on Cameron's contract long before CC could even negotiate with teams other than the Brewers.
  6. That's logan's short, short version (nod to the fellow Spaceballs fans out there) on how Bush looked tonight from seeing him firsthand in Appleton. Regardless of how this season winds up, the Brewers definitely need a healthy & effective Dave Bush to return. The guy Bush walked was on 4 straight pitches. The hard hit ball was to deep CF in the first inning.
  7. - Dragonlance Chronicles series Weis/Hickman Dragons of Autumn Twilight Dragons of Winter Night Dragons of Spring Dawning - Dune - Science fiction. I don't know how to describe it well enough to do it justice. It is supposed to be one of the best science fiction books ever. I don't know if I would go that far, but I thought it was pretty good. Was made into a really bad movie in the 80's and a pretty good miniseries by SciFi in 2000. - If you like Star wars, the Thrawn Trilogy. - I will second the Shannara books. - Song of Fire and Ice series. You might want to wait until more books in the series come out. They will and do kill off anybody in this series. - Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb - I think the Wheel of Time Series is pretty good for the first 6 books, but things start to drag after that. The 10th book was really just a money grab in my eyes. The book didn't go anywhere and probably can almost be skipped. Add in that there are still 3 more books coming out, one this year and one each of the next 2 years.
  8. I think the Weeks injury probably cost them 2 wins or so (along with the cost of Lopez), which would put them at 83, then the combo of Bush, Suppan probably cost a game. However, the fact that Gallardo has been healthy all year I don't think Weeks hurt much because Counsell and McGehee have played so well. Parra was probably expected to be in the 4.50 range for ERA. I believe he is more like 6.00 which would be 3 wins over 180 innings. Bush was probaly expected to be in the 4.50-4.75 range and is 5.67 right now. That is about 2 wins oer 180 innings. Looper and Suppan have been probably as expected.
  9. There are definitely flaws in the defensive metrics. They don't take defensive positioning into account. That is fine for the most part. Positioning can be part of what makes a defender good. The problem comes in when talking about drastic shifts. How much that effects the stats is really hard to say. I think when many people think of defense they are probably thinking about raw skills and give credit for positioning to the coaches. I would love to see skill broken out from positioning.
  10. Depends on how much you trust the MiLB defensive statistics. As far as I know there are only fielding percentage and Total Zone. Fielding % is really a terrible way to look at defense at the MLB level with well groomed fields and somewhat consistent scorers. I think it would be practically useless on the MiLB level. Total Zone is ok and probably gives you a small look at what to expect. I agree with ennder that it is probably way to early to know what to expect on defense from Escobar. His Total Zone in the minors is all over the place, but improving year to year. The scouting on him is that he will be a very good defender. What is he now, I don't know. Assume he is better than average for now.
  11. The family also feels if it had been anybody but Mayor Barrett that stepped in, Anthony would not have been arrested. Yeah because when somebody gets put in the hospital they usually don't arrest anybody.
  12. I believe he has to be added to the 40-man roster. Depending on how much Strasburg is paid in the last year, this contract could actually be worth a lot more. You have to take into consideration that a player can't have their salary cut by more than 20% in any one year or 30% over 2 years. Per Cot's Stephen Strasburg rhp 4 years/$15.1M (2009-12) 4 years/$15.1M (2009-12) [li]signed Major League contract with Washington 8/17/09$7.5M signing bonus (paid in 3 installments of $2.5M, 9/1/09, 1/10/10, 1/10/11) 09:$0.4M (pro-rated), 10:$2M, 11:$2.5M, 12:$3M [/li] drafted 2009 (1-1) (San Diego State) agent: Scott Boras ML service So assuming his rookie year is 2012 he would get at least $2.4M in 2013 and $2.1Min 2013.
  13. You have got to be kidding me. I am going to the game tonight. I really wanted to see him play. I went to a game earlier this year and he was out with an injury.
  14. Even when we were supposedly picking up a good part of Cameron's contract? The premise of the thread was to look at things with hindsight. Now lets say everything stays the same as the way that we know it Bush, Weeks, and Suppan all go down with injuries and miss time.
  15. Why do people keep assuming that Melvin never "got" any offers but yet, somehow have the crystal ball knowing he didn't get offered anything? Nobody is making that assumption.
  16. The Brewers missed tying for the division lead by one at bat in 2007. Cordero gave up a HR to Ramirez. If the starting pitching does better, our bullpen doesn't get worn out. The bullpen being worn out wasn't Yost's fault anymore than the bullpen being worn out this year is Macha's fault.
  17. You seem to be saying that "Melvin should have traded JJ, period." That makes no sense whatsoever.
  18. In hindsight, the only thing that makes sense for last offseason would be to trade guys like Hardy, Hart and Cameron for prospects and build towards 2010 and later. If Bush and Parra don't dramatically underperform and Bush doesn't get injured we are one pitcher away. That one pitcher would have likely cost us other key pieces though. Those 2 guys performing like expected probably puts us in the mid eighties for wins. With a little luck we find ourselves right in the middle of things. I still thought we were on the outside looking in for the playoffs for the season.
  19. .333/.390/.438/.828
  20. Escobar grounded out his first two at bats on Thursday and hit was a dribbler up the line which barely made it halfway before being picked up just before it stopped. Besides, I was asking people who watched him in the minors, not his tiny amount of at bats in the majors this year.
  21. FOr those who have watched Escobar play a lot, does he pound alot of balls into the ground? I haven't been watching the games very closely the last few days, but the only ball I saw him hit hard was a flyout to left field.
  22. We would have to go on a tear until the end of August and then win every series against Chicago and St. Louis in September with a sweep of each thrown in. Winning 2 of 3 against a team only makes up one game. This thread has posts in it every single day since it was started except the 14th. It never went away.
  23. Brew Crew Ball looks at what would have happened if we signed CC. Link Basically we would have been slightly better than the Cubs right now and still 4 games behind the Cardinals. All of this with very little payroll flexibility.
  24. They are not going to call up to many guys. I think they will wait an extra week or two until the AAA season is over.
  25. I'm not sure I understand why you are separating out those 2 ideas. Mostly because we don't know if DM got a decent offer for Hardy. We don't know if he was offered a middle of the rotation guy or a prospect. DM was probably looking for a guy with MLB experience as you pointed out. We don't know if a guy like that was offered. Anybody who would have traded for Hardy would more than likely be a team that thought they were playofff contenders or it would make little sense to trade for him. I doubt a team like that would want to trade a decent pitcher.
