  1. Let him pitch his next start and go from there. If he struggles in his next start, skip the next one and let him work out of the pen for a bit. We have an off day and the rest of the pitchers would go on normal rest. He was streaky within games last year where he would be ok then "lose it" for a few batters. Seems magnified a bit this year.
  2. I honestly see no reason to use Hoffman outside of the closer's role. He seems to be a one inning pitcher. I prefer setup guys who can go more than an inning so that yo can bring them in during the 6th or 7th innings and they can go more than an inning.
  3. Deosn't matter. That is already figured into the value. The player you are referring to is a replacement player. It is assumed that a replacement player is worth 0 and whatever innings a pitcher pitches is in place of that replacement player. That is why it is value over replacement player. Sheets pitched 198.1 innings at a 3.09 ERA in place of that replacement player.
  4. Every MLB manager designates a closer. I hate to admit it, but the Cubs have done a good job bringing in guys to be the closer while keeping their best reliever free. Using Wood as the closer and bringing in Gragg this year. The only way to keep your best guy free is if he is young and you bring in a veteran. Unless a closer completely sucks, there isn't really a need to have your best guy do it. I know Marmol is overrated and doesn't really throw strikes. He has had good results and is very effective though.
  5. How many runs before it's OK to leave the bases loaded? I think the number is 7. Putting Julio in was an example of the wishful thinking that Yost was so often accused of. Yeah I had to chuckle at that as well. I guess more managers manage like that than we realize. My notes 1) I think Fielder stole the base because he got tired standing at 2B and wanted to get out of the rain 2) The strike zone seemed inconsistent around the edges 3) I don't like Hall batting 2 instead of Hardy, even against LHP. No real reason other than I am not a big Hall fan. I think the LHP splits have them pretty equal over 2006-2008 4) Jorge Julio, adios muchacho, better luck with your next team 5) Florida Marlins,, get your phones working. 6) Bill Hall, how are you related to the official scorer. Seriously, a ball hit right at you hits you and no error? What the crap?
  6. Seriously though, the Brewers run differential has suggested a little bit of luck. Provus said a winning % in 1 run games is the hallmark of a good team, I think it's the hallmark of a somewhat lucky team. I was going to say that I somewhat agree it is lucky and a good bullpen will help in one run games. I see somebody beat me to it. I would also add that a good offense will help swing one run games. I thik our team with a solid pen and good offense is set up to win more than our fair share of 1-run games. I think our bullpen can soak up a lot of innings without wearing down if handled properly. We have Villanueva, DiFelice, Coffey and McClung who can go more than an inning and keep the other team down. You don't burn out a pen as quickly if you use guys more than an inning. Letting relievers hit bothers me a little, but I like to see the relievers go longer like they have.
  7. I still can't believe that people think Sheets winning games for us early in the season don't matter. I wish he had been hurt early and come back later in the season. That way people would call him "clutch."
  8. I liked Conan when he started out and just did whatever because nobody was watching. I remember them sending Andy Richter to Mardi Gras.
  9. I think most people think this. The problem is, who in the organization would be that replacement?
  10. Just for reference, before the series their predicted Pythagorean wins were 88 and ours 89. Now it is 84 and 92. Probably not the best or most accurate way to do it, but a fun toy. Link It basically calculates a Pythagorean win percentage for the rest of the year, calculates the number of expected wins for the rest of the year and adds them to their current wins. wins+ (runs scored*runs scored)/((runs scored*runs scored)+(runs allowed*runs allowed)))*games remaining
  11. I think they sill bring Kendall back for one more year. I think they will hand the job over to Salome or Lucroy in 2011. I get the feeling we will be considered contenders next year and Melvin thinks Kendall is a guy who will help a contender.
  12. Meh, the guy is confident in himself and his teammates. Good for him. The Reds were 26-20 coming into this series and we were 27-20. I personally don't think that the Reds are as good as us, but the difference is close enough I don't think what he said is to crazy. Now Richard Justice saying the Astros have no holes on the other hand....
  13. Gamel out and Hall in with a lead is probably a good move. Preventing runs at this point is more important than scoring runs.
  14. Our pen should be ok today unless they go extra innings. The only guys who probably aren't available would be Villanueva and McClung. Villanueva should even be ok since he only went just over an inning and didn't pitch the night before.
  15. I am not excited to watch Yo hit at all. I would have said the same thing for any pitcher that can hit better than Ben Sheets. Sac bunting is overall a bad move unless you you are down a run or tied late in a game. I forgot to add, if you catch the defense off guard by sac bunting it would be a good idea. When everybody in the stadium including the drunk guy in left field trying to start the wave knows it is coming, it shouldn't be done. We discussed this in the statistical analysis forum a while back. Link
  16. Wait a week(well, just over) and the type A/B free agent thing doesn't matter at all.
  17. No it wouldn't. We are paying Macha and Ned this year either way.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  18. This is a terrible time to be bunting. I still maintain that Macha sac bunts to much. It is one of his faults. I really don[t care where we rank in MLB for the number of sac bunts. I think it is very misleading. We would be ranked much higher if Kendall or our 7th hitter got on base more with less than 2 outs. It also doesn't include times when the batter couldn't get a bunt down before getting to 2 strikes then trying to hit.
  19. I guess I was a little confused because the 2 teams you cited were teams that made the playoffs.
  20. Sveum didn't exactly do a good job of managing either. We likely make the playoffs with or without Yost. Making the playoffs probably had more to do with CC pitching as much as he did. Are you trying to say that firing Hurdle is good because now the Rockies have a chance to make the playoffs? The Rockies are a bad team that is probably going to lose a lot of games. Firing Hurdle was probably a move to make fans feel better. To show management was doing something.
  21. In the end the perception of Escobar is skewed by comparing him to Hardy, instead of the other SS prospects in the game. Not really. He is compared to Hardy because that is who he would be replacing. Even if he was the best SS in all of MiLB and that wouldn't matter. When talking about a position on the MLB club, it is always going to involve all of our options at that position. Until JJ moves on that discussion will involve JJ vs Escobar.
  22. I think turning a double play is much harder for a 2B than it is for a SS. I think Melvin and company probably intended to move Escobar back to primarily SS around this point unless they decided to call him up to play 2B in the majors.
  23. Unless there is a personality conflict between the manager and the players or management. It makes no sense to fire a manager mid season. It is a waste of money since he is getting paid anyway. Managers are rarely the cause for a team playing poorly.
  24. JJ played his entire rookie year and had the defense. I don't know if he should've been up, but it'd be somewhat the same if Escobar was called up and started in the bigs this year. I don't know if it's 100% the right move, but the defense was ready and the bat would come. Hardy missed almost the entire previous season. It would be nothing like bringing up Escobar right now. Hardy probably should have spent time in the minors getting his swing back before playing in the minors. It would be like Escobar getting hurt in early May and missing the rest of this season and then being the opening day SS in 2010.
  25. the guys to target are high potential unproven arms around the league, not the established arms that much more costly to acquire both in terms of talent and dollar value. Do you mean other teams top pitching prospects? I would rather target secondary pitching prospects and get more of them than top pitching prospects. Top pitching prospects are not likely to be much of a bargain and pitchers have a much higher injury/failure rate than position players. I totally agree with putting money into FA position players instead of pitching. As far as free agents go, I prefer shorter contracts in general.
