  1. I don't think the Crew should write him off at least for another 2 years. I am sure that they would like to hang onto him for that long, but he is out of options. An outfield of Gwynn, Braun and Hart is not all that bad. Probably true, but an outfield of Braun, Cameron, Hart is much better. I hope TGJ has a good MLB career. He seems like a nice guy. I just don't think that he is ready to start for a team that is trying to make the playoffs.
  2. Good point. I guess guys who don't walk much.
  3. I equate the phrase "free swinging" to "lower OBP due to strikeout." How do you see it differently? I would say high strikeout guys who don't take walks. Braun and Hart are the only ones on our team I would think of as free swingers. Braun is improving though.
  4. I would take Teixeria over Fielder. He is as good offensively and better on defense. I don't know who catches for the Yankees or who they have in the outfield. I might even take Kendall over their catcher and Hart over their other outfielders. I would have to look closer.
  5. Looking at OBP/SLG/OPS will give you most of that player's offensive value. How a player gets their numbers only makes a difference if those stats are nearly identical. I would take at least 4 of our players by position over the players in the same position on the Yankees.(Hardy, Weeks, Braun, Cameron) The Yankees are far from ideal. They were a terrible defensive team. Like I said, building a team isn't about getting the ideal player at each position, it is about getting the best available player while staying within your budget. The Yankees were a poorly built team. They signed guys to long contracts just before they started to decline. They have improved and should be better next year but still have a couple weak spots in their order.
  6. I've stated that Cam was the best option...he's just not ideal. Building a team isn't about "ideal." It is about trying to put the best group of players available together while working within a budget. Fielder isn't "ideal" at 1B. The only ideal team would be a team of the best players at each position.
  7. You also have to make an adjustment for Cameron playing CF and Abreu playing RF.
  8. Even if Abreu scored on all of those 22 extra chances, not likely.(probably closer to about 40% of those or 9 runs or 0.9 wins) That would only come to 22 more runs or 2.2 wins. Nowhere near enough to cover the his defensive shortcomings and the adjustment for playing a less premium defensive position. The wOBA projections have Abreu and Cameron about 17-40 points of wOBA apart. 20 points of wOBA over a full season is about 1 win. About 0.85- 2 wins. Still nowhere near enough to cover the defensive difference.

  11. Handedness is secondary to actually being a good player. None of the LH options that have been presented this entire offseason are any better than what we have. The Brewers have a lot of free swinging RH bats...when they go cold we've seen how stale this offense can be. The "free swinging" has nothing to do with it. We need better OBP to get more consistent.
  12. I don't think he is as bad as people make him out to be. He really is. He hasn't had a positive UZR/150 since 2003. His best in that time is a -4.1UZR/150.(-9.6, -6.3, -15.2, -4.1, -23.1)Link 2006-2008 Plus/minus has him ahead of only Dye, Hawpe and Cuddyer. Link IMO he just doesn't have the offensive tool set that this team really needs and his skill set the team may have enough of at times. Doesn't matter how he gets his offensive value. You may not like it, it may not be pretty, but it really doesn't matter.
  13. I'm not a huge Cam guy because he's not what the team 'needs', but I guess I can't hold that against him. I disagree. Cameron is a good player and every team needs good players. I think I pointed in another thread that offensively, Abreu was better than or about equal to Cameron in every major offensively category last year. Edmonds also had a tremendous year in Chicago. People just assume they will both drop off and Cameron will not. People have never argued that Abreu couldn't equal Cameron on offense. They have argued that Abreu is a complete butcher in the field and overall would have made the team worse.
  14. I was going to post this blog in the "Haudricourt inaccuracies" thread, but didn't get around to it. In fact, it was also one of our readers who notified Tom H. about the post here. I thought that name looked familiar.(Yoshii8)
  15. I really don't think the defense is gonna be very good, and this certainly won't help a mediocre starting staff. Our defense is better than mediocre. It is actually pretty good. We only have one poor and one average-below average defender. There is no way we are anything but above average to good on defense.
  16. Parra hit the wall almost exactly when people thought he would. He should be good for 20-30 more innings this year than last year. That would put him in the 186-196 range. We really shouldn't have to worry about Parra at all this year until maybe the end of September. If he pitches well, he might hit the wall again then. Of course he had many high stress(high pitch count) innings last year. Where is the Suppan bashing? He is an average to below average pitcher. Probably the worst pitcher likely to be in our starting rotation. It is best for the team to skip our worst starter. He makes a lot of money compared to his talent. The money is gone and it sucks, but we might as well try to get something out of him.
  17. Hudson would have been a very small upgrade on defense over Weeks. Weeks would have been a huge drop off in defense even if Weeks was average in CF. Hudson is a small upgrade on offense over Cameron. The only way signing Hudson and moving Weeks to CF instead of picking up Cameron's option makes sense is if you have a very strong dislike for Weeks and/or Cameron.
  18. In my experience, HR is one of the first areas to get cut and is generally run as thin as possible because it is not thought of as a "profit making center."
  19. This post has a completely different meaning if you don't read the previous post first.
  20. It's only spring training. I will wait until the season starts to make any judgments on Macha.
  21. Good post TheCrew07. I don't think that education of parents was quite the right way to put it. There is a lack of accountability in many cases though. Is there really any penalty for unexcused absences and such. Even if there is, are they enforced. I am really unhappy with how the education system as a whole. It is geared towards the worst students at the lower levels. There is so much time put into passing the stupid "no child left behind tests" that not enough is done to keep smarter kids interested. I would go so far as to say the the smarter kids get neglected. At the school my kid goes to they said that they didn't like to make kids feel singled out. Load of crap in my opinion. I don't blame the teachers or even the administration though. Their funding is based on getting as many students to pas the standardized tests as possible. My kid turns in work late all the time and he still gets enough credit to make honor roll. He is only in 6th grade though and the middle school principle made it clear that as he gets into 7th and 8th grade and even high school, there will be more responsibility placed on the student to get work in on time. We went to a meeting with the principle where he told us that starting pretty soon, parents are going to have meetings with the principle and their kid about future plans and school. They showed us his standardized test scores and asked our son what he wanted to do in the future.
  22. I think there should be more parent education. There is a big push for parents to be involved with their kids education, and there should be. Some parents take it to far though. It is tough to let your kids make mistakes on their own and get hurt. I see no reason to give a less intelligent student the same grade as an intelligent student. You get a C if you give max effort, but if you are not smart, you should never get an A. It just isn't fair to smart kids.
  23. Is it almost like they specialize in baseball?
  24. "Students often confuse the level of effort with the quality of work. There is a mentality in students that 'if I work hard, I deserve a high grade.' " This makes sense since all you have to do to get good grades in high school is put in the effort. Don't they talk w/their kids? I don't know about other parents, but my son usually "forgets" to bring home notes about his missing assignments. He always has his work done, he just doesn't get it from his locker to the teacher. If the teachers don't have the grades in the computer, we don't usually know about his missing assignments until the teacher calls with a couple weeks left in the semester. Bottom line is that kids can be purposely deceptive if they think they are going to get in trouble for something.
