  1. They were using the piggybacking of relievers at AAA for at least a little while with Turnbow as well. I guess developing relievers would create a need to identify if a player can start at an earlier stage than they are currently making that decision if it is going to take 3 years to develop a reliever. Otherwise you are going to have to try to pass them through waivers or put them on then= MLB team to finish their development.
  2. I don't think 2008 looks like an outlier at all. Maybe he improved, but if I am building a MLB team and already have a very good SS I am not willing to take that chance unless I know my team isn't competing for a playoff spot. A year when he had an OBP 24 point higher, SLG 68 points higher and OPS 100 points higher than in any other season looks like an outlier to me. I am not saying that he isn't as good as his 2008 numbers suggest.
  3. I don't think anybody has ever said that Escobar won't hit or can't hit, although the statistics make 2008 look like an outlier right now. The general feeling seems to be that until he repeats or comes close to repeating his 2008 stats, there doesn't seem to be any reason to gamble on him starting in the majors when we already have a very good SS.
  4. I was thinking the exact same thing. We still need a LH hitter and an OF would be the ideal place for a left LH hitter to play. I think Cameron is going to need a few more days off due to his advanced age.
  5. I would love a 4 year deal with Hardy. I think it would have to be around $10M per year on average for him to even consider it though. He is headed for a huge payday after 2010 unless he drastically falls off.
  6. They just posted an article over at THT about left handed catchers. Haven't had time to read it yet, but here's the LINK. Edit: Upon further review, it looks like it is about LH hitting catchers. Sorry. LINK to make up for previous link. There have only been 32 left-handed throwing players who caught in at least 1 defensive inning. If you exclude the ten men who only caught in a single game, then you're talking about just 22 players. If you count only those guys who caught 100 or more games in a career, you're down to exactly five left-handed throwing catchers. However, if you're only counting career catchers (minimum of 1,000 games caught), then you have exactly one and that is Jack Clements.
  7. The stated philosophy in drafting under Zduriencik was to draft power, power arms and power bats. Fielder, Weeks, LaPorta and Braun were all high offensive upside with defensive shortcomings.
  8. Is it a failure to develop relievers or just a general failure to develop pitchers within the system? Seems to me that the Brewers are just bad with pitchers in general. Instead of failed starters becoming relievers for us, they become nothing with few exceptions.
  9. At home on the TiVo provided I am not at the game.
  10. Guess the Rays will have the Grapler platoon this year.
  11. Kind of surprising considering his deal last year got done hours before the arbitration hearings. Hopegully this is an indication that Hardy is going to sign a long term deal. When do the arbitration hearings start by the way?
  12. I am not sure his deal is market value anymore. At the time of the contract he got a league average deal, but similar guys don't seem to be getting as good or as long of deals this offseason. It just doesn't seem like any teams are willing to take on money right now.
  13. Swisher would give us more flexibility at 1B and the corner outfield spots in 2010 and beyond. The Brewers had a good defense last year for the first time in a very long time and I would hate to take a step back.
  14. Have to say I am surprised to see Gamel and Escobar get any votes outside of the top 3.
  15. I don't think they offered a contract of any sort at the winter meetings. Sheets has only been offered arbitration, that's it. He would have received 12 by accepting arbitration. How do we know that? That just seems to be speculation on Tom Haudricourt's part.
  16. I think our minor leaguers are to thin and valuable to be trading right now.
  17. I think our minor leaguers are to thin and valuable to be trading right now.
  18. Not really. The fact that Dunn's BA is lower means when he gets hits, he hit for more power. BA and K's make little difference if the OBP and SLG are basically equal, which I would expect them to be at least next year. The only big difference is that Dunn may be good enough at 1B not to negate much of his offensive value like Fielder does. Career wOBA Dunn .383 Fielder .379
  19. All those former Cardinals seem all the same.
  20. Hardy would leadoff then.
  21. Other than BA and K's, how is Fielder better than Dunn? Even if Dunn starts getting worse, and he probably will pretty soon, I think he at least equal to Fielder as a hitter.
  22. If an upgrade falls into your lap for second base, you take it, but I really don't think you're going to find a better value. This is true of any position. The main thing is to look where we can make the biggest impact to our team for the least money. Replacing Weeks with a player that will outproduce him would be very expensive.
  23. Weeks was just starting to hit when we acquired Durham so you could make the arguement that Acquiring Durham hurt the team.
  24. I think he wants to start for a team instead of being a backup. I also kind of got the impression that coming to Milwaukee and playing was just so he could get back in the majors. A stepping stone for a better job.
  25. If you took Weeks batting line from last year and swapped out 7 walks for singles, he would go up 15 points of SLG. I know the numbers are the numbers, but a few more hits and Weeks line looks pretty good.
