  1. A good defensive 1B would make Weeks and Hall better defenders. Most of their problems are with throws. It isn't like Weeks DP turns are terribly off. They are often in the dirt.
  2. No, he is average as has been show again and again.
  3. Kapler hits from the wrong side of the plate. I am not sure if he wants to play in Milwaukee.
  4. I like this signing. It pushes all our other relievers back one spot and pushes the worst guy out. I don't think it will have a big impact overall. The worst case scenario is that we have another solid reliever in the pen. Not a signing I am going to get to excited about though.
  5. Unless the team suspects that he won't be able to pitch a large portion of the season due to his injury, but we haven't gotten any indication to that effect. We don't know the extent of Sheets current injury so in my opinion it doesn't really pay to take it into consideration much. I am sure any contract he is given will take that injury into consideration. Unless we have had the wool pulled over our eyes, Sheets' current injury should heal on it's own. I will admit that it doesn't pay for any of the parties involved to give full disclosure on his current injury. Ignoring his current injury, I think Sheets has been injury prone. I don't think any of his injuries point towards him being any more injury prone than a normal pitcher in the future. His injuries are mostly non-pitching related unlike Burnett's injuries. Burnett has missed lots of time with pitching elbow and shoulder related injuries. Burnett's injuries would worry me more since they could lead to a drop off in production while Sheets' do not. Others have pointed out that we shouldn't expect a pitcher to go 200+ innings on a regular basis. Getting even 150+ innings out of Sheets adds more to this team than letting many pitchers cover those innings.
  6. It is a bad idea to tell your wife you didn't gain any weight over the holidays.
  7. I cannot off the top of my head think of single case where the Brewers seriously pursued a FA where 'all things were equal' and they lost the guy to a warmer/bigger city There were many free agents we didn't pursue because we were told they were not interested.
  8. If Hoffman passes on us and Sheets signs somewhere else, I think we are back to "nobody wants to play in Milwaukee." There have been several free agents that signed deals that look like Melvin would have done.
  9. Maybe somebody should ask Tom Haudricourt.
  10. Based on what?Good timing. Record in one run games early in the season. We won more games than we probably should have. I don't think our talent was that of a 90 win team in 2008. Every year teams are going to win somewhere in a range around where their talent really is, not exactly the number of wins their talent dictates. Two teams with equal talent can easily have drastically different records.
  11. We certainly aren't a 90 loss team though We probably were not really a 90 win team last year either.
  12. My guess as to why blood tests are only done for a 3rd+ offense is that blood tests are expensive(relative to other tests). When there is an injury at my workplace that requires a doctor or emergency room visit, they tell us to only have the person do a urine test because blood tests cost more.
  13. How much does playing in front of better defenses in Cleveland and Milwaukee affect that? I know the Yankees improved at 1B, but overall I have to think they are still a prety bad defensive team.
  14. and 24 innings in 2008. I am not sure what an almost full year layoff will do to a pitcher, but I would guess he hits the wall sometime in early September if he is treated like a pitcher coming off a full year of pitching much like Parra did in 2008. I have not read anything on pitchers coming back from injuries, but I would expect to see several in the next few months given Gallardo's importance to our 2009 season.
  15. I doubt Burrell plays in the field except maybe in interleague games in NL stadiums against LHP. That's the only time I would play him in the field barring injury anyway.
  16. I don't think he pitches enough innings to get 18 wins. I am not sure we should expect Yo to go more than 160-180 innings. I know that is a big range, but I haven't given it enough thought to narrow it down yet. I am pretty sure he isn't quite ready to go a full season.
  17. I think part of the low cost might be he is best played as a DH.
  18. I wouldn't want to give up a pick t get a closer. There may come a time where all teams operate on a level field financially and at that time it may be worth giving up a pick to get a guy, but until that time we need picks to continue filling out our farm system.
  19. True, I wouldn't platoon either though. Weeks went .361/.749, .352/.787, .319/.710 during that same time. The big difference I see between the two is that Weeks doesn't mash LHP like Hardy(and almost every other Brewer other than Fielder) does.
  20. I am guessing he was a Cubs fan that heard over the radio that they got swept out of the playoffs for the second year in a row.
  21. I completely disagree with trading Hart instead of Cameron as well. I would rather keep the cheap guy we control for 3 years rather than the expensive guy we only have for a year. I would rather keep both over picking up Ramirez.
  22. I think he is leading off and playing 2B for us for the next 3 years. It is unfortunate that he is "only" league average offensively and with the glove now. Since he is cheap and under control for 3 years, I think he is a guy to hang on to unless we have a better player to replace him. I think we are going to have, and currently have, more pressing concerns with replacing bad players and acquiring pitching before we seek out doing something about average players.(3B this year-CF,3B, C next year-pitching every year) Of course if the right deal comes along I am not opposed to trading Weeks or any player for that matter. Weeks still carries a .338 OBP against RHP. I would rather platoon Hardy and his .312 OBP against RHP. I think both are full time players.
  23. Fielder was the only guy on the Brewers infield who ended up with a negative in the fielding bible awards. I have little problem with a ground ball pitcher. I would prefer a fly ball pitcher, but a ground ball pitcher doesn't make me cringe like it would have in past years. Fielder -12 Weeks +5 Hardy +19(third in the majors) Hall +7 special notice for Durham and his -12
  24. I was looking up the New Glarus Road Slush and it looks like they are not making it this year. Looks like they are going to have a Coffee Stout instead. Also for the D-Man fans, they are going to have it out in May. I may be mistaken, but I thought I remembered it coming out in July last year. I no doubt will be trying the New Glarus Black Wheat when it comes out. New Glarus Beer Calendar Michelob has a line of craft beers out. I saw them with $2 off coupons so I picked up the Dunkel and Amber Bock. The Dunkel isn't to bad.
  25. Considering that Manny is probably one of the worst if not the worst outfielders and plays in the easiest outfield position, I could see the overall defense slippage as being more than the offensive upgrade.
