  1. The baseball season is over for me as soon as the Brewers are eliminated. I don't think I watch even a full game through the whole year outside of Brewers games.
  2. Can't say I like a contract longer than 4 years. At that money over 5 years I doubt it is more than a token effort.
  3. I think they take a player's production and figure it over a full season if they are injured.
  4. I wouldn't have had a problem with Counsell coming back. I do think he was given to big of a role last year. He should have been limited to no more than 1-2 starts a week at either 2B or SS. I have no problem with paying a veteran even $4M to be a bench player if it means saving time on the clock of a young player.
  5. I think Melvin just knew he wanted Macha, but didn't want to interview only Macha & Randolph (minority candidate). That's my complete guess of a hunch. That's the feeling I got as well. They really didn't even interview Randolph. Having the scouting director interview is just a sham. Given Brenly's use of small ball and Melvin stating our team wasn't built for small ball, I don't think he was ever a serious candidate. I am not disappointed that Macha was hired, just with the overall hiring process.
  6. Unproven big leaguers: Gallardo, Parra, Gwynn, Stetter Marginal big leaguers or notable busts: Hart (yes Jon Hart), [Weeks, Jones, Krynzel, Rogers, Jeffress - all rd 1] . . . . and on and on and on and on and on. Gwynn unproven? Gwynn should be dropped down to the marginal level. He has a celing as a 4th-5th outfielder.
  7. Yup, that's it. I would rather see the statistics than a bunch of pictures for 4 year olds.
  8. Would we be on the hook for 80% of his contract? This seems to indicate we would not. Link The club's salary offer to a player under its control (pre-free agency players) may not be less than 80% of the player's salary and performance bonuses the previous year or less than 70% of his salary and performance bonuses from 2 years earlier. (Exception: If a player won an arbitration award the previous year increasing his salary 50% or more, the 80% requirement does not apply.) The 80% rule does not apply to free agents who are offered arbitration.
  9. The thing I see right away with sac bunting is we don't know whether the manager called it or the player initiated it. We sometimes don't ever find out. We have to assume the manager is to blame by failing to tell the player not to bunt. I am not sure how many people remember it from last year, but I would like to see the stats behind the manager pictures the college professor from out east did last year. The pictures were cute and all, but I prefer stats.
  10. I am not sure that Weeks can improve much in the field either. I think the tools are there, but he isn't very instinctive.
  11. I would hope we are in the part of the franchise cycle where we trade our players for close to ready players that will help sooner rather than later instead of the part of the cycle where we would prefer draft picks. I really see no reason to trade Fielder until we have a competent back up in mind though. If Gamel was ready to play 1B at the start of 2009 or close to ready I would be aggressively shopping Fielder, but we are still trying to see if he will stick at 3B.
  12. If the projections are using multiple years I can understand why there would be a bigger gap. If Weeks and Hardy play defensively in 2009 like they did in 2008, I would expect the projected gap to close. Like I said in the start, Weeks is still being penalized for being a crappy defender when he came up.

  14. I watched it when I got home and it looked like the Gopher hit the puck with his stick. The TV commentators though they might be reviewing it because there was a chance it went of a skate.
  15. My guess is that it is tough to tell how good one manager is compared to another. It is really easy to pick out which players are better because we have many useful stats to tell us. There is no point in firing a manager just to bring in some other guy who is likely just as bad. Makes the fans happy. May make the players happy. Gives the impression that management is "dooing something." No real impact though. This hiring process was a farce from the start. My feeling is that a perfect manager doesn't cost his team any wins. None of the managers in MLB fall under that category. I think the best manager probably costs his team 2 wins and the worst 4. Most managers are roughly equal because they all have pluses and minuses. Many make the same mistakes because it is "by the book." Most of the problem is the GMs around the league hiring their guys or who they think are good baseball guys.
  16. No they didn't. Burrell was leading all outfielders in OPS at that point of the season and had much better stats than Hart. It wasn't even close. Hart .289/.327/.504/.831 Burrell .275/.404/.575/.979
  17. I don't think they will adjust this year. I think it might even take a good part of next year as well.
  18. The low strikeout rate as a starter is the thing that jumps out. The HR as well, but that's not as dramatic.
  19. A lot of the penalty time on Saturday night had more to do with the fight than the rule changes. There were 10 guys in the penalty box plus a guy ejected at one point. I have to agree that in general there is almost no flow to the game. In my opinion the players have to adjust.
  20. I don't think it is accurate to look only at teams that won championships if we talk about competitive balance. We need to look at which teams make the playoffs as well since the playoffs are pretty random after you make it in. That way we take luck out of the equation.
  21. I think there is a good chance we field a team very similar, at least on offense, next year. We were looking for that same left handed bat all last off season as well. $10M will be cheaper in the long run than giving up multiple prospects for a marginally better player.
  22. Don't trade Braun Gallardo Other than those 2, I would take a reasonable trade on almost anybody. I wouldn't be looking to move anybody outside of Hall or Suppan though. I don't think there is much chance either gets traded based on their ugly contracts. Hall was really not happy about being moved into a part time roll earlier in the year and to be honest his biggest role with us for next year would be either the small half of a 3B platoon or as a super-sub. I think he would be better off going to a team that could use him as a SS everyday.
  23. I am not sure Sheets would do well in Colorado. Other than that I agree he will do well anywhere.
  24. I think that a lot of the people here understand that rluz...but the general media needs to cater to the multitudes of bandwagon fans that wouldn't understand this concept...Why? Reporters are doing fans a disservice by continuing to cater to outdated and just plain wrong thinking.
  25. It would be really nice to have our own announcers instead of listening to the other teams' homers every game.
