  1. The only thing Weeks didn't do well on offense is hit for average. That isn't small, but if he hits for a better average his SLG would go up as well. Edit: If Weeks had 7 more hits this season his line changes to .248/.354/.413/.767. That's 7 singles, no extra base hits. The fact is he didn't, but he only needs minimal improvement to go from average to top 10.
  2. I think the Astros make a push for some starting pitching. Their offense isn't terrible. A couple good starters and they could make the playoffs next year.
  3. How are park effects figured? I would think that having a bad pitching staff would make a park a hitters' park. I know that some parks are easier to hit in, but I have a hard time thinking that park effects are more than a little effected by the players that play there.
  4. I would rather get a player who will stick around more than one year for Fielder.
  5. I wouldn't want to bring in a 32 year old to be a starter for more than a 2 year contract.
  6. No one is debating that. The question is whether Attanasio should.
  7. We'd probably expect Weeks to hit something like .250/.355/.415 next year (conservative guess) Weeks has a career line of .245/.352/.406 so that wouldn't be much of an improvement over what he has done already. I would say that is a very conservative guess expecting almost no improvement from a 26 year old player.
  8. Like Gagne's contract this year. Even if we had the $10M we paid him back, there wasn't anyone we could go out and pay that $10M to to improve the team.
  9. I would go the opposite route and trade for pitching instead of getting it in free agency. Free agency in general is a huge ripoff unless you can get a guy to take a 1-2 year contract. Even then you overpay on a per year basis. A contract isn't as potentially crippling at 1-2 years. Add in the general higher injury risk associated with all pitchers and free agency is definitely not the way to go for pitching.
  10. If he is a 3-5 win player next year that is likely the difference between making and missing the playoffs as well. How long does he stay that 3-5 win player though? If we start letting other players go, like Cameron for instance, it starts to eat into the wins CC would add and doesn't make it worth signing him, especially at $20M+a year.
  11. Replacement level pitcher in most cases refers to a player who would put up stats around 75% of an average MLB starter I believe. That's what it means when people talk about VORP anyway. Most estimates took into account the ERA we would expect versus the ERA of the pitcher CC was likely to replace and multiplied it by the number of starts CC was expected to make. Then they used the commonly accepted "10 runs equals one win" to come up with their estimate. Many even added some to account for a better arm in the pen and less bullpen innings.
  12. That's our 3TO. Walk, strikeout, or HR.
  13. Could be Eaves not being comfortable with letting players work outside his system. I have always heard that Eaves used a pro style offense. I don't watch any NHL hockey so I wouldn't know. I admit I am not to fond of the dump and chase. Doesn't seem a proactive way to score goals. I don't mind waiting around for the other team to make mistakes early in games, but it makes it tough to win late in games when we are down. I remember the year they won it all all the passes went stick to stick. The next year it seemed like the puck handling was not as good. Last year looked pretty good.
  14. Ever since they won it all they have had their best forwards leave early. Turris almost left in the middle of the year last year. Kind of a two edged sword recruiting top players.
  15. All else being close to equal, I would take the guy with a higher OBP every time. Other than 3B, I think improving our position players is far down the list of concerns.
  16. Best part of the episode in my opinion. The show is always better when Dwight and Jim are the focus.
  17. My brother and I are going to the October 25th game. We are hoping that some of the BF.net people would like to meet somewhere before the game.
  18. I agree completely. I think that over the last few years we have always been looking to the next big player coming up. To the point where we almost expect a minor leaguer to come up every year and be a star. Nobody looks ready to come up next year. At least not right away. I don't think it would be bad to have all those AA stars from this year in AAA next year to mature a bit and see where they are. Also, just in case somebody goes down with an injury it wouldn't hurt to have some good players in AAA. We were pretty lucky with injuries this year.
  19. He will always be Braun Solo in my mind.
  20. Weeks .234/.342/.398/.740 Average MLB 2B .276/.338/.409/.747 Pretty much average. I have to agree that 3B is the #1 area that needs to be improved next year. I think #2 depends on who we are bringing back. We are going to need bullpen arms and bench players. I think we are pretty set almost everywhere else.
  21. The JS had their end of season grades. Now what does Brewerfan.net give to our players? Team - (A) - This was a team greater than the sum of their parts. I think they probably won more games than they should have given the talent. Offense - (B-) - I think most of the under performing was on the offensive side. Most underperformed compared to their 2005-2007 splits. Of course given the age of our players it is hard to get a good read on most of them yet. Pitching - (B+) - I give the starting pitching an A and the bullpen a B. I think the bullpen was pretty solid, but got an assist from the starting pitching going deep into games. Kendall(B-)- Nice to have a good defender behind the plate, above average OBP, below average OPS Fielder© - Not a bad year, just not as good as expected, defense is bad and hurts our overall infield defense Weeks(C-) - Solid 2nd half to bring his overall stats up to average, still below average on defense Hall(F) - Bad offense, bad defense, hope somebody needs a SS over the offseason Hardy(B) - One of only a few players to improve overall this year Braun(B) - OBP a little low, solid defense, pretty good overall Cameron(B) - Nice to have a true CF on the team, hope he is back next year Hart(D+) - disappointing overall, pathetic OBP Bench(A) - love the "throw away" games Sheets(B+) - Started the season great, didn't finish so great Suppan(D+) - so much for "the best ability is dependability" Bush(B) - slow start, finished strong, results probably better than his actual pitching warranted, our new big game pitcher(just kidding Russ) CC(inc) - only played half a season or it would be an A++, phenomenal half year McClung(B-) - Filled in at crucial times for us, some very memorable appearances out of the bullpen Parra(B) - Solid starter, looking for big things from him next year Villy(B) - bad as starter, good in pen Shouse(B+) - LOOGY Mota© - Up and down year, not good or bad Gange(F) - huge dissapointment Torres(B+) - solid and dependable for most of the year Riske(inc) - incomplete due to injury Edit: How I came up with my grades. For the pitchers I just went on feel. I am not very good with pitching stats(someting I should have looked more into before now, but haven't) so I just went on feel. For our 8 "regular" starters I used the following method. Base grade: 50% OBP vs league average for position 30% SLG vs league average for position 20% grade vs my expectations take base grade and plus or minus 2 for defense(for example a B base grade for a bad defender, -2, would go down to a C+)
  22. The hockey season is finally upon us. It looks like we are going to be a competitive team, but the offense seems to be a big question mark. I hope we can find some consistent scorers and fast. The schedule is brutal for the first 8 games.
  23. That's about all the move was really good for in my opinion, PR. I won't argue whether Yost needed to go. I really couldn't care less who the manager is. Both moves gained PR, but were probaly better off not being made. As long as Mark A. doesn't keep stepping in to do things like the firing of Yost or having his GM sign guys to deals like the Suppan contract, I think he will make a good owner.
  24. I like the fact that Mark wants to be involved, but if it leads to more moves like the Suppan signing and the Yost firing I would rather he sell the team. I don't like moves that feel like a fan was involved with the decision and both of those moves feel that way to me. I thought the Suppan deal was bad from the start and the firing of Yost was very unprofessional.
  25. I am not ready to give up on him either. I just think a lot of the backlash has to do with being drafted #2 overall and the expectations that go with that. I thought Weeks was not to bad defensivley. I think that he just made some realy memorable mistakes and most of the judgement on his defense is based off of that.
