  1. I hope the offer is for 4 /$100M instead of 5/$100. I think a 4 year deal is a reasonable offer while the same money over 5 years isn't as likely to be accepted. I really don't want CC on a 5 year deal. Also the further you get from a 3 year deal the less likely he is to accept because he is less likely to get another big deal. I think you have to do close to 3 or 7.
  2. As long as the Brewers are in Milwaukee players, coaches and commentators will come and go. No big deal.
  3. Then why wait until the last day? He could have announced it then. It was reported that the Brewers held meetings on the topic. If he was so sure, why hold a meeting? Melvin almost always waits until the last day to do anything. The Brewers under Melvin have a habit of not offering arbitration or picking up options until the last possible day.
  4. I don't like Torres, McClung or Villanueve as closer. In my opinion they should all be middle relief. It is a waste to put a pitcher who can go multiple innings in the closer role. Leave them in the 5th-8th inning stopper role. Bring in a one inning guy to be the closer. Better yet, leave Torres, McClung and Villanueva in middle relief and leave them in for the 9th inning if they pitch the 8th.
  5. I have 3 E-mail accounts I use. I have an account at work that gets used only for work stuff.(E-mailing HR and IT) I have 2 hotmail accounts which I have had for almost 10 years. One for E-mailing friends and family and one for all my online stuff.(guess which gets all the junk) I would look into Gmail, but I don't want to go through the hassle of changing E-mail accounts. I always find it to be a hassle when my friends change their accounts as well. Some people change accounts to whatever the ISP is whenever they move. The one thing I hate about hotmail is they change their look every other year. It is really annoying to adjust to using it every time they change. Other than that, I really have little complaints about it.
  6. I disagree. They have the Silver Slugger awards for offense. I don't think they consider defense much with those, why should they consider offense when giving out Gold Gloves? What a player does after catching the ball is part of the defense. They have MVP awards for overall performance. Edit: I find it amusing how often Cameron is coming up on the lists as one of the better defenders after reading all the claims on this board on how he is such a bad defender because he missed a few plays.
  7. They are both pretty equal on offense so I would go with the younger guy. Durham would make more sense for a team that needs a stopgap 2B until their prospect is ready more than he does for us. If he could play more than just 2B I think he would be a good guy to bring back. I wouldn't mind him as a bench player. The Weeks vs Durham defense stuff was part of the reason I started the Hardy vs Weeks defensively thread. I think preferring Durham over Weeks on defense is just another case of "Our player isn't good so anybody else would be better." Fans need a change of scenery.
  8. Since we are discussing it again, I will post my graphs again. 2008 rankings in strikeouts, walks, HR, BA, OBP SLg and OPS vs ranking for runs scored. The stuff Danzig linked in graph form. What we should expect to see is a line ging from the bottom left hand corner to the top right hand corner if a stat is closely related to runs scored. The closer to a line the points are gathered the more closely related to runs the stat is. Link
  9. Great point. Just look at this past season. Texas was 4th in the AL in Ks and led the AL in runs scored. The 5 teams best at not striking out were ranked(in order) 26, 21, 4, 12, and 15 in runs scored.
  10. Teixeira would also instantly improve our infield defense.
  11. If that is the case, then I blame Maddux for Bush being so sucky out of spring training. I think Bush was even walking a lot of guys early.
  12. Since Hart, Hardy, and Fielder are all entering their first year of arby Hardy is in his second year of arbitration.
  13. Dave Bush comes to mind as a guy who was tinkered with this year in spring training. I know he is going to be up and down because he doesn't strik out enough guys, but I seem to remember comments about changing something and going back after a month or so.
  14. I think they should pick it up. I would like to see the Brewers find somebody else for the closer role though. I prefer to see pitchers who can go multiple innings like Torres in a more flexible role.
  15. Why should I be happy for Geoff Jenkins and the Phillies. They knocked us out of the playoffs.
  16. Mostly because what you are asking us to do is ignore 4 years worth of at bats and use a spring training's worth of at bats to make a judgment.
  17. I think we need good bench players. If young players can do that, then good. Otherwise I have no problem paying a veteran more money to make our team better.
  18. Is that like the Cain/Hackman theory?
  19. I think the issue is that people are not differentiating between a center fielder and the corner outfield positions. Cameron's numbers were decent for CF, but would actually be bad/mediocre if he was in LF or RF. Just this year of course, but average by position LF .269/.344/.442/.786 CF .268/.334/.420/.753 RF .276/.347/.451/.798 Cameron .243/.331/.477/.809 It looks like his bat would be ok at any outfield position. Of course it makes him average instead of above average and negates his plus glove a bit. Escobar fans who want him at SS and Hardy at 3B complicates Melvin's thought process even more. I really hope he doesn't worry about what Escobar fans think. Besides, Escobar would make Kendall our 2nd worst hitter instead of our worst hitter. I don/t think his defense is worth that.
  20. We had one on our roster last year making $800K by the name of Gabe Kapler. Certainly not as good defensively, but much more rounded offensively. By rounded I am guessing you mean strikes out less and has a lower SLG. Kapler is going to be 33 at the start of next year. I would rather take the chance Cameron doesn't regress much as opposed to a guy over 30 having a career year. I have to say that it is a load off my mind that they picked up his option. I was really worried they wouldn't and I think it would have been a huge mistake.
  21. You're comparing 2006 Suppan to 2008 CC? Not even close.I don't think he is comparing the talent of the players, just making the point that it is a bad idea to sign a contract with a player unless you plan to keep him for the duration of the contract. So many things can happen that could make him untradeable. Injuries are always a concern with pitchers. I know everyone wants CC back (well, pretty much everyone on this board). I sure do...I'll be the first to celebrate if Sabathia is back. I don't care if it's 4-6 years...I want the man back in Milwaukee. But we have to be patient. I want Sabathia back, but I want a contract that isn't potentially franchise crippling.
  22. I lost sleep last week playing Fable 2. There is always one more thing to do before quitting. Before I finished it the first time I set up a couple more characters to earn money so when I play through my 2nd and 3rd times I will have a nice stash of money. It really doesn't take long to play through, but there is enough freedom to do almost anything that it will keep me busy for quite a while. You get a disorderly conduct and anger the villagers if you use the "pickup line" gesture while running around without clothes.
  23. We can probably eliminate Joe Maddon from any future good manager discussions. Joe Maddon's tactical errors Maddon's been a great leader for Tampa and he'll rightfully win the AL manager of the year award. However, his decisions in the World Series -- particularly with regard to bullpen usage -- were generally unwise. First, Maddon made the mistake of starting Rocco Baldelli against a right-handed starter in Game 2 and Gabe Gross against a lefty in Game 3 (they were a combined 0-for-5). Then he was far too reluctant to use one of his quality lefties in his bullpen. In particular, he allowed Chase Utley and Ryan Howard to bat against right-hander Matt Garza in the sixth inning of Game 3. The result? Back-to-back home runs. Where were J.P. Howell, David Price and Trever Miller? Then in the fourth inning of Game 4, Maddon let Howard bat against a visibly laboring -- and right-handed -- Andy Sonnanstine. The result? A three-run bomb that effectively ended the game and the series. (And all of this is to say nothing of his decision to let J.P. Howell hit in Game 5.)
  24. The 80% is for non free agents only. You can offer free agents anything you want. See Toby's post here. (changed link so it'd go directly to post --1992)
  25. I have never been to the Sandbar in the Dells. I blame myself. I usually ask my friends if they want to go. They ask "what's the Sandbar?" I reply "a place that lets 16 year olds drink." They say " why would we want to go there then?" My friends are not Dead Milkmen fans.
