  1. I would imagine that they are referring to the pressure from the player's union to get the highest possible amount. It's not necessarily just for himself, but the bigger deal he gets, that will drive up the price of all upper echelon starting pitchers. The union really handcuffs top players in this regard. Maybe, but it still comes down to being their choice and to say otherwise is untrue.
  2. That's what I was thinking. Did CC and his agent also say "it isn't my decision?" I love that one. "I would like to stay with this team, but it isn't my decision." Just be honest, you are going to whoever pays the most. Sure we have the money to resign CC, but should we really tie up 25%+ of our payroll in one player? I would say no.
  3. The theory is that you should use small ball against a good pitcher not when you have a good pitcher pitching for you.
  4. I feel like I have been watching a fan run my favorite team for the last 2 weeks. Who won the lottery to run the team and where did you sign up?
  5. From this thread. 1992casey Article: Too Much of a Sacrifice? Old threads: To Bunt, or Not to Bunt Article: "Too Much of a Sacrifice?" (bunting) In the first article "Too Much of a Sacrafice?" they set thresholds for players who should bunt. .206OBP/.132SLG Almost no everyday player is below that. You still should bunt occasionally to keep the defense honest. Yost bunted about the right amount.
  6. Giving up outs when you are not hitting only makes things worse in my opinion. Even moving a guy over with a bunt usually requires a hit to score that guy at some point. Given the SLG of our team, we would be better off waiting for that hit instead of giving up outs. I have no problem with pitchers attempting sac bunts and an occasional sac bunt by another player, but 2+ per game is sheer lunacy. If I was the opposing manager I would be eager for the Brewers to give me 10% of their outs per game.
  7. Maybe I am misunderstanding your post, but in August the Brewers went 20-7 which was one of the best months in Brewers history. I would hardly call them flat in August.
  8. I may have tried to defend any one of those sac bunts, but not all 3 in the same game. Definitely not the sac bunt with the 2nd hitter of the game.
  9. An error can be commited at any time. A double play can only happen if there is a runner on base. The Brewers have reached base on error 24 times with runers on and grounded into double plays 94 times.
  10. Did he spend time in a German death camp as a child as well?
  11. Here is a link to an article in Baseball Prospectus on strikeouts and what they correlate to for hitters and pitchers. Strikeouts are one of those weird things that correlate well for pitchers, but not for hitters. I think streakyness was another one.
  12. If I was Pinella I would rest my guys against the Mets and play them against the Brewers to get them ready for the playoffs. I would start setting up my rotation for the playoffs last week.
  13. League average 2008 SS .270/.325/.388/.714 2B .274/.338/.407/.745 3B .266/.337/.438/.775 Hardy 2008 .287/.347/.487/.834 Hardy career .271/.330/.448/.778 Moving Hardy to 3B makes him average. The 2008 SS stats are dragged down by the AL shortstops.
  14. I have been wondering what long term impact this unorthodox decision will have in the community of "baseball men" in relation to the image of the Brewers franchise. The last thing I want is another "baseball guy." I didn't want Yost fired because I feel that one "baseball guy" if pretty much the same as any other. I am sure we will get another guy to make dumb "it's in the book" decisions. What we have done as of right now is trade bad bullpen management for small ball.
  15. Pretty much what I thought. I think this sentence is the key. I am going to continue giving very little attention to strikeouts unless comparing a player to himself in different years. I think it would be hard for a player to cut down on strikeouts and keep everything else about his approach the same. Assuming 500 at bats and a .300 BABIP, every 10 strikeouts a player would cut down on would result in 6 points of batting average. In my opinion, it would take a drastic change in approach to get any significant gain in OBP. The resulting change in approach would also likely cause a big negative change in SLG.
  16. All outs have a negative impact on OBP. How are strikeouts worse than any other out? I think we would be better off if Hart had been striking out more this year instead of hitting into double plays.
  17. They were discussing it in this thread.
  18. There are 3 types of free agents. Type A - compensation is a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd round and a first round pick from the team that signs them unless that team drafts in the top half of the 1st round, then it is a 2nd round pick Type B - compensation is a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd round everyone else - no compensation To get these compensation picks a team has to offer their own free agent arbitration by a certain date(December 1st this year). Here is a link if you want to read more.
  19. It's amazing to me to read threads like this which people complain about an owner who spends money and is involved. It isn't like he is spending more money than the team brings in.(I know this year he is, but our payroll will probably fall next year) I think there is a good chance we would have a similar payroll no matter who owned the team. You have no evidence to support that claim, even though you and others continually suggest it. Those contracts stand out as deals that don't make sense for a team running on a budget. They are really out of character for everything Melvin has done with this team.
  20. That slide by Counsell was almost to far away from the bag. He might have been able to touch the bag.
  21. 2 Yost/4 Svuem I think. 6 Straight starts. With an off day after the double header.
  22. That isn't much of an endorsement. The best that can be said about a player is that he isn't a liability? Ouch, doesn't say much about our other players really. Unfortunately I agree. Almost to a player they all have faults, and big ones in most cases. However they are all young(most a couple years from there prime yet) and there isn't anybody in AAA really knocking on the door for playing time.
  23. Ah, so it was there before the firing...I was thinking it had something to do with that http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif. It's been there for a while. The Force Unleashed is a video game and it was released on September 16th.
  24. Doubt it would be on Wii as it is made by Rare who is owned by Microsoft.
