  1. To be perfectly clear I think the save is a stupid stat and the current "typical" use of closers is stupid as well.(stupid may be a little strong, but I would say extermely flawed) I think the "closer" position is driven more by money than what is best for the team. Look to what Cordero got in free agency compared to Linebrink. Do I think Cordero is better, yes, but not worth more than twice the money. Keeping a player as the closer is more about keeping a player happy and not "cheating" him out of free agency money than effective use.
  2. The teams I was refering to were NYY, CIN, SEA, and OAK.(so I guess I should have said 4, I also know that some of those teams changed managers over the year, but their closers didn't show much different use when the manager changed) They were the only ones who used their closer more than an inning any significant amount of the time. Chicago got somewhat lucky that they had a younger player who could be stepped over for the closer's role. Saves are about money. You have to have either an inexperienced young guy you can pass over or a guy new to the team if you want somebody else as the closer.
  3. I rented Assasins Creed and was pretty unimpressed(of course I also have been playing Mass Effect so everything seems pretty boring compared to that.) I hear that Assasins Creed is like Hitman lite. It is an easy game. I hear lots of good things about Call of Duty 4. http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3164320&sec=REVIEWS http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3164177&sec=REVIEWS
  4. I be behind you. Waaaaayyyyyyy behind you.
  5. I don't see Melvin thrying to get anything longer than a 4 year contract.
  6. That is a pretty flimsy arguement to use against a manager as I would say all but 2 or 3 managers stick to that. If you want a different bulpen management you have to change the GM as well. I can almost guarantee you that the next manager does the same thing. As I said before, if we looked as closely at other managers as we do at Yost we would easily find each costing his team 2-3 wins a year. BTW I think it is a terrible idea to use your best reliever in only save situations.
  7. I am guessing ennder was refering more to Braun vs Hall at 3B more than Cameron in CF.
  8. I really don't care who the manager is, I just disagree that changing the manager is going to make much difference. But batting Estrada fifth for as long as Nedly did was blatantly bizarre. I also disagree with Estrada batting 5th but this is one where I don't get to worked up over anymore. You are talking 18 PA over the course of the season. Lets say he is batting ahead of 2 guys with Fielder's OBP. The difference between .296 OBP and .395 OBP over 36 PA is about 3.5 base runners. Moving him ahead of Hall and Hart is approx 1.4 baserunners over the whole year. I might have made a mistake in the calculations, but my point is the difference is very small. Just trying to put it into some perspective. The difference would show more in the extra base hits I think, but should still be pretty small.
  9. By good I mean a team that had a chance at the playoffs or a winning record. It could easily be argued that Melvin left Yost with a bad pen and nobody to play 3B at the start of the year. We therfore had to bring up Braun instead of leaving him AAA to improve his defense. I think Melvin was operating like he had Koskie coming back last year when he didn't. Yost has only had one year when winning actually mattered more than developing players. Changing managers isn't going to change our overall strategy much unless you get a different GM.
  10. I guess the question would be "why is Yost on the hot seat?" He has only had one good team to work with in 5 years.
  11. So basically they will have a better team this year, but could have a worse record? I think that could be the case.
  12. You need the "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" also.

  23. You can also find it in Florida.
  24. Estrada's problem was that he was neither a good slugging/hitting catcher or a good defender/game caller.
  25. From the sound of Haudricourt's interview with Homer you get the feeling that Melvin and Yost are under a win "or else." Yost moreso, but I think Melvin isn't to far behind. I don't think that Yost would be fired midseason. I would see that as giving up on the season.
