  1. Me either, but I have found no evidence that points to a manager who does that. The only times I have seen it is in cases where there is an established closer who has been with the team and a new guy comes in like Marmol with the Cubs or the situation in San Diego with Hoffman. We might have been better off this year if Turnbow had held onto the closer's job last year and we had Cordero as a setup guy.
  2. Right, and you know that I have never said that Yost was using Cordero correctly. I think that Yost needs to spend the offseason convincing Cordero that his greatest value to the team is as a middle reliever/stopper and not as the closer. Edit: That is provided we can resign Cordero.
  3. He said that Melvin was using a different strategy.
  4. Again you are talking about a guy with a much better bulpen. He also only used his closer in a nonsave situation once. On 7/8/07 he used his closer in the bottom of an extra innings game on the road. His closer only pitched more than an inning on one occasion. That was on 8/1/07 when Valverde blew a save and was left in for the next inning. To me this does not point to pattern of strategy much different than Yost's.
  5. Actually recent history has shown no advantage to being an experienced manager as far as post season success is concerned.
  6. I like the idea of Villy back in the stopper role, but I would rather give Villy the chance to get 200+ innings instead of limiting him to 70-100 innings. How about resigning CoCo and making Turnbow the closer? Keep CoCo as the stopper. I have no faith in any manager using a closer properly. The only way I see a manager using his best reliever properly is if he isn't the closer. I doubt Cordero will go for that. I remember him being very grateful at getting a chance to be the closer again when he came over. I also don't see him being happy if he misses out on saves, even if it would benefit the team. I think most closers would see this as taking money away from them.
  7. Why do people have a problem with locking guys into innings? I understand being upset with Cordero not pitching earlier in games, but in Turnbow's case I don't understand the problem with bringing him in at the start of the 8th inning. He isn't somebody I would want to bring in with guys on base to stop a rally.
  8. I hope everybody picked at least on wild card team for the series.
  9. At this point would a good bulpen strategy be, Turnbow pitches on odd days and Wise pitches on even days? EDIT: I am not sure if I mean this sarcastically or not. Both seem to pitch better if not on consecutive days. Turnbow is a little better on consecutive days than Wisse, but not much. Wouldn't we just be better off with somebody else who could pitch without these restrictions than taking up 2 roster spots with one effective guy? Maybe somebody who wouldn't need to be coddled so much.
  10. Kind of a sidetrack, but Karen(don't know her real name) was in a movie called, Now You Know. Written and Directed by Jeff Anderson. EDIT: My typing/spelling really sucks tonight.
  11. All I will add to the discussion about shifts is that they look really bad when they don't work and go largely unnoticed when the do. We are more likley to remember things that generate a large level of emotion rather than things that don't. Still that is only my opinion.
  12. I would like to agree with you, but at this point I think there has been so much Yost stuff brought up that any talk about managing strategies has a good chance of devolving into a Yost debate. I could be and hope I am wrong.http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif If we had stats in support of or against shifts, then I would be interested, but to me at least it is a subjective discussion.
  13. I guess this relates to what I was asking since it relates to positioning. In that case I would ask if we shift a lot because we have a weak defense instead of asking if we should shift. If we start talking about wether we should shift that is going to lead to the people who support Yost saying they like the shift because "it plays to the percentages" and the people who don't like Yost will see it as "just another stupid move by our manager." If it is going to turn into another Yost discussion well, I am not going to get involved in that here. Bottom line is I am asking, is how much is one player's defensive positioning affected by another player's defensive shortcomings?
  14. How much does Braun at 3B affect Hardy at short? I saw Reenteria make quite a few plays on balls hit hard up the middle that Hardy doesn't get to. Is that because he has to play a little closer to 3B to cover some of the area Braun should be covering? Same for Weeks at 2B because of Fielder. Also, how many errors could a better 1B have prevented? I know all these things are almost impossible to get an accurate measure for, but I was just wondering, in everybody's opinion, how much of an effect one player in a position can have on the player next to him.
  15. This goes back to my whole Yost is about the same as any other manager theory. I have to agree that the worst thing to do wold be to fire a manager midseason. That doesn't sound like somthing Melvin would do anyway so it really doesn't worry me. I know people will hate this, but we have to face it, Ned has only really had 2 years now where he had to manage to win. The first 3 years we were a AAAA team developing players and valued playing time over wins.
  16. I apologize in advance if I am misinterpreting what you are saying, but when managers refer to shortening the game they are usually talking about having a dominant closer and/or set up man who makes the game 7-8 innings instead of 9. They are not talking about removing starters early. Again, I apologize if I misinterpreted what you wrote. Looking at just the months of May - June(47-33 record), the starts break down like this <5 innings 9 5 innings 20 6 innings 31 7+ innings 20 Going through there were 13 starts where the pitcher did not reach either a minimum 7 innings or 90 pitches. Of those, 3 were starts where Sheets or Capuano had to be removed because of injury. One was a spot start where Villanueva, who was not stretched out to start, had to replace Capuano at the last minute. That leaves the following starts, 4/23, 4/27, 5/11, 5/13, 5/14, 5/18, 5/23, 6/8, and 6/10. Looking at game logs only a couple of those were a case where the starter might have been removed too soon. Looking through the games it was alarming to see how many 6 inning, 95+ pitch games there were.
  17. To make it easier to compare I think we should look at it like this K/BB ratio Braun: 3.79 Fielder: 1.34 Hardy: 1.83 Weeks: 1.49
  18. Nah, go ahead.http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif I should have either looked up his stats or left him out. Edit: At this point anytime somebody speaks up for Yost there is almost always piling on.
  19. The point is that you can't expect more wins because some players had good years and ignore that many players had really bad years.
  20. A .500 record did keep us in the race until the third to last day of the season. On the flip side, I think people would have lowered their expectations if we told them 1. Hall would follow up his best season by falling on his face. 2. Jenkins and Mench would put up pretty poor numbers despite playing with a platoon advantage all season. 3. Capuano instead of being a solid #2 starter would not win a game the second half of the season.(Not his fault completley) 4. Sheets would be out for a good portion of the season. 5. I don't think anybody thought we had a good defense, but I don't think anybody thought it would be as bad as it has. I don't disagree that we left games on the field, I just disagree that Yost is much different than any other manager. Given a manager that put his players in the best position to win we would have won more games. How many is debatable, but I suspect it is no more than 2-3. Give that same manager to every team and I suspect that the final record of every team would be much the same as they are right now. I won't disagree with the big stumble in the second half. I still think it had more to do with Cordero coming back to earth, Villanueve getting tired, and Sheets getting hurt.
  21. Honestly I think we see different things when taking a step back, as you put it. I see a team that was only expected to win 82-85 games and be in 2nd or 3rd place in the division by most people before the season started. 2 games stood out to me this week for the managers on the opposite bench for situations that would get Ned in big trouble with his critics. The first was Monday's game where LaRussa left his starter in the game to give up 9 runs, 4 earned. The next was tonights game. Thatcher, a lefty, gets brought in and gives up a hit to Braun. Then Fielder gets intentionally walked so that Thatcher can face Hart. If Yost brought in Shouse and let him pitch to a right handed batter and then intentionally walked a lefty, some people would want him gone yesterday.
  22. I think our middle reliever role is more important than who our closer is. Considering how closers are used, I think there are more important innings than the 9th. I think Turnbow will be the closer and they need to pick up a very good middle reliever.
  23. At least the state of wisconsin won't have a bunch of people walking around with pissed pants.
  24. I concur with TLB. That is the way I am trying to look at the season. I am not even looking at the standings anymore.
